hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : X1000 Status Update
   posted by MaximvsPayne on 7-Jun-2011 20:31:13 (12406 reads)
London, 7th June 2011

A-EON Technology is pleased to announce that following an extensive test programme Varisys are about to commence manufacturing the full complement of
Nemo 2 motherboards for the AmigaOne X1000 Beta Test Team. As part of the pre-qualification process, Varisys have ported the PowerPC version of Debian
Squeeze to demonstrate that all onboard components and subsystems are working as expected. The AmigaOS4 developers have also been busy porting the latest
version of AmigaOS4.1.x

Cool Running

The energy efficiency of the PA Semi CPU was fully demonstrated during the testing phase. A thermal imaging camera was used to measure the CPU and board
temperatures while running Debian Squeeze in dual-core under full load conditions. A maximum CPU/Heatsink/Fan assembly temperature of 31.1C was recorded while playing a DVD on a software rendered 1920x1200 full screen display. With the CPU fan disconnected the temperature rose to meagre 34.6C with a CPU core temperature of 61C.

AmigaOne X1000 Update Article

We are also pleased to announce that the next issue of "Amiga Future" magazine will contain a Nemo 2 update article. Issue 91 (July/August) should be released in early July and can be ordered from the "Amiga Future" website or your local Amiga reseller.

@itix

Do you know the AmigaOS4 HAL inside out? What drivers are you taking about her? And what API does this drivers use? And how many hours they need to research and lean all this.

Linux and Amiga drivers have nothing in common really.

I suspect it will be a lot quicker for OS4 devs to rely on X1000 documentation for an OS4 port, than for Varisys devs to rely on OS4 documentation for an OS4 port. The OS4 devs have ported to a lot of different hardware platforms. Varisys only (?) have experience of porting Linux to their hardware.

I honestly don't even know why this question was even raised.

@ChrisH

OS4 developers has to read the hardware documentation.

vs

Varisys developers has to read the OS4 documentation.

I think its hard to say what is quicker, anyway are Varisys interested in doing the drivers for OS4?

We demonstrated AmigaOS 4.1 on the X1000 at AmiWest in October. What calendar are you using?

Like the 'Secret Projects' drawer on the Workbench screengrab, seems very deliberately left out. Hope there's something of genuine interest in there! Can't see myself upgrading to an X1000 unless some exciting new software developments come along.

Hmm... is there any particular reason why Varisys was not contracted to port OS4?

Experience with OS4 lies with Hyperion's team? Varisys doesn't have any relevant Amiga experience? Varisys has likely ported Linux to all their other boards, and thus have good experience doing that?

Which probably was a single core 32-bit version? Given the delay of the X1000 itself (and thus more time for OS4 development), and the hints given in the OpenGL status blog entry, I guess what everyone would like to know is the status of SMP (and maybe 64-bit as well)...

I think it is very easy to say: Knowing the operating system internals (Hyp) and read some hardware docs and write a driver is MUCH more easy than to know your hardware (Var) but need to learn an operating system and how to write and debug drivers for it.

My A1-XE starts to feel slow.

So is mine. Even for simple things. Some people say you don't need fast hardware for AmigaOS but today that's not true anymore because we make use of other software technology that's slow and needs a hefty CPU.

For example. Reading a PDF. I downloaded a simple B&W manual for a router. OS4 takes ages to render a page. At least a second. Am I using my A1200/030 with APDF? No.

Web browsing. Apart from flash (which may make it better speedwise) simple browsing takes a lot of CPU power now days wih scripts and fancy gfx everywhere. That needs power.

Very good examples: Web browsing and PDF reading. Also managing and viewing modern digicam pictures is dog slow because of 10+megapixels. Not to mention HD videos... But having flash will most certainly not makes things faster, rather much slower I would think.

I don't share your YAM problem though, but I don't have it set to store every e-mail address either. Although I do store every e-mail since 1996, except spam.

My point is, unfortuately, we need a Ghz powerful computer these days just to do the simple things.

We do. Those who say we don't aren't using their Amigas for everyday life.

Yup, that was what I was trying to say.

X1000 now miss only the beta test phase and then it will be up for sale.
It was unfortunate that rev.1 had problems leading to a delay, but all in all, we are finally close to have a new Amiga on dealer shelves soon.
Rejoice!

@gtmooya

I take it those screens are seperate grabs and not the two OS running together with one virtualised? That would be cool!

I like the "Secret Projects" sitting in the corner.
