hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : X1000 Status Update
posted by MaximvsPayne on 7-Jun-2011 20:31:13 (12404 reads)
London, 7th June 2011

A-EON Technology is pleased to announce that following an extensive test programme Varisys are about to commence manufacturing the full complement of
Nemo 2 motherboards for the AmigaOne X1000 Beta Test Team. As part of the pre-qualification process, Varisys have ported the PowerPC version of Debian
Squeeze to demonstrate that all onboard components and subsystems are working as expected. The AmigaOS4 developers have also been busy porting the latest
version of AmigaOS4.1.x

Cool Running

The energy efficiency of the PA Semi CPU was fully demonstrated during the testing phase. A thermal imaging camera was used to measure the CPU and board
temperatures while running Debian Squeeze in dual-core under full load conditions. A maximum CPU/Heatsink/Fan assembly temperature of 31.1C was recorded while playing a DVD on a software rendered 1920x1200 full screen display. With the CPU fan disconnected the temperature rose to meagre 34.6C with a CPU core temperature of 61C.

AmigaOne X1000 Update Article

We are also pleased to announce that the next issue of "Amiga Future" magazine will contain a Nemo 2 update article. Issue 91 (July/August) should be released in early July and can be ordered from the "Amiga Future" website or your local Amiga reseller.

Huh? I thought it was lacking certain enhancements!

Very good examples

And simple ones as well. I haven't even touched ones that require power such as audio mixing or graphical rendering.

Good point yes. My camera only outputs less than 3MB JPEGs so they are manageable and displayed fast enough with MulltiView direct from USB. But too big for screen, it needs a scaler.

But having flash will most certainly not makes things faster,

I meant to say not having flash will be faster,

I don't share your YAM problem though, but I don't have it set to store every e-mail address either.

I must check the settings then, I didn't put it on myself AFAIR. I'm sure it was on by default.

This is an example of doing things the wrong way, and then wrongly blaming the Amiga for being slow. Multiview is NOT how you should preview large digital camera pictures! You need to use something which can show the EXIF "preview" pictures already built into most JPGs created by digitial cameras:

AmigaOS4 already has good PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol) support built-in, so if your camera supports this (I guess not in your case) then when you plug it in via USB it will "just work". I don't use it myself, but it was pretty cool when I saw it in action (and VERY fast).

There are also a lot of 3rd-party programs which support EXIF, typically with names like "PhotoAlbum", "PhotoFolio", etc. I even wrote (but not yet properly released) a program call "PictureAlbum" which handles EXIF... And these programs usually scale the full (non-preview) picture to fit the screen too!

I of course never preview images while they are still in the camera over USB1.1! I use DOpus and look at the file date and copy the last batch to HD, then view them using PicShow which have scalability. but even loading and viewing such (8Mpix) images without scaling is slow. With scaling we're talking many seconds.

PicShow has the nice pre-buffering thingy though so if you look at each image long enough it will switch instantly to the next one. Still annoying if you like to go back or quickly scan through.
