Hardware News   Hardware News : Freescale unveils next-generation QorIQ platform
   posted by gregthecanuck on 21-Jun-2011 7:08:43 (7989 reads)
Link: Freescale Drives Embedded Multicore Innovation with New QorIQ Advanced Multiprocessing Series

In summary:
- announces new E6500 64bit core
- multithreaded (2 threads per core)
- up to 2.5Ghz clock rate
- 28nm process
- Altivec
- first chip is 12 core/24thread beast, T4240
- availability "early 2012" - typical Freescale

Looks like a good next-generation candidate for the X1000 series. By the time these are mature the timing should be about right.

Quoting directly from press release:

The AMP series consists of three levels of products within a scalable portfolio, initially spanning from ultra-high-performance processors featuring 24 virtual cores down to single-core products.

Control plane processors (service provider routers, storage networks)
Up to 6 cores running at up to 2.5 GHz
Greater than 6 MB L2 cache

High-end data plane processors (routers, switches, access gateways, mil/aero applications)
Up to 24 virtual cores running at up to 2.0 GHz
50 Gbps IP forwarding capability
Advanced application acceleration

Low-end data plane processors (media gateways, network attached storage, integrated services router)
Up to 8 virtual cores running up to 1.6 GHz
Advanced application acceleration
Less than 10W power

Freescale's first product in the QorIQ AMP series, the T4240 device, integrates a host of hardware accelerators with 12 dual-threaded e6500 cores, providing 24 threads to address high-end data plane processing applications. Dual-threaded efficiency, improved DMIPs per thread and higher frequency deliver 4x performance gain and more than 2x power efficiency gain over the previous-generation QorIQ P4080 device. Advanced capabilities allow for intelligent sharing and duplication of resources between threads and a larger amount of on-die cache per core. Application examples for the T4240 device include metro carrier edge routers, access gateways and aerospace/defense products. Freescale will provide more details regarding the T4240 product later this year. The device is planned for initial availability in early 2012.

So here are the first beanies of the new Freescale line up, as I "guessed" out earlier in other threads, it has a new core and features a brand new 180 instructions Altivec unit.
Multi-threaded 64-Bit, large cache (says more than 6MB in the 6 cores version), up to 2.5Ghz clock at 28 nanometer.
Might not be born for desktop use, but I'd love to see it running AmigaOS just the same

Anyway our next CPU is the PA6T-1682M, we'll look what Freescale has to offer in 2014 when they'll make the X2000

@KimmoK

Interesting, it says 240 giga flops for the new Altivec. Even if it's single precision it's still more than i7...

This is welcome news from Fireescale, while news article is taking about expected increase in network traffic, power and PowerPC cpu's are also the hart of AmigaOS4 compatible computers, while most of computers to day are powered by Intel, and low end is powered by ARM, the power/powerpc has not disappeared, you find power architecture primitively hi end server, network routers, space industry, and in XBOX and PS3.

+ on 3G (<E) BaseStations, BaseStationControllers, Nintendo Wii (current+future) ...

PowerArchitecture is alive. (but I'm afraid it's not growing like ARM & MIPS)

it would seem that the new Wii U (which now has Full HD graphics) also uses a PPC CPU form IBM (some thought Nintendo would move away from IBM/PPC, but it didn't happen )

It's still not that exciting since Amd already has 12 core chips available to purchase today. How far behind will they be by the time they're released.

@terminils
Considering the AMD price ($1800) and the fact that the CPU you linked doesn't achieve the same number of giga flops of what freescale will deliver (240Gflops) not that much behind I presume...

@terminills

We are not going to catch up with those 200W intel chips, but next gen (below) 30W PPC chips should be very nice for desktop anyway.

Also ... after Hyperion gains more experience from "Power" type of PPC cores (PA6T is the first one) some lunatic could build a IBM Power based high end AmigaOneX5000

I must be missing something. 240Gflops is per core or total with 12 cores?

I'd assume it's over the 12 cores. What's the vector unit performance of other CPU archs and cores?

12 cores for 240 GFLOPS
That's 20 GFLOPS / core
At 2.5GHz, that's 8 FLOPS/cycle.

In Single Precision, that's a 128-bit FMADD (Fused Multiply Add), or 256-bit non-fused FMUL + FADD.

Intel's Sandy Bridge has a 256-bit non-fused FMUL + FADD, and runs faster than 2.5GHz.

AMD's Bulldozer has a 256-bit FMADD per-module (shared between two cores), or a 128-bit FMADD per-core. That would be equivalent in performance per clock to this PowerPC architecture too.

Of course, if you're doing serious HPC you'll be using a proper accelerator to do your computation, and these get into the TFLOPS in single precision, and over 500GFLOPS for double. Even the ancient Cell processor could do well over 200GFLOPS, for example.

@Hattig

A niggly...

The clock speed quoted for the 12 core is 2.0Ghz. That makes it 10 FLOPS/cycle, in theory.

all none x86 cpus suffer very low DMIPS / MHZ scores.

Before anyone says speed is not important, ask people who compile, transcode video, gaming AI take alot of cpu power.

The next generation Amiga compatibles must have :

2 Ghz+ processor, > 3 DMIPS/core, Altivec

4 GB High speed DDR 3 memory

High end GFX card

Digital media processor for HD/mpeg/x264 playback

FPGA based MINIMIG core

I believe the 6180 is 124.8 GFlops per core. What generation core is in the QorlQ?

Current AMD Llano A8-3850 can do about 500 GFlops (not including UVD3 video decoder block).

2012 AMD Trinity estimated to be about 750 GFlops i.e. quoted to be 50 percent faster than AMD Llano.

AMD's product development cycle is being driven by the ATI side.

@Hattig

Note that AMD Bulldozer uses 4 operand format, while Altivec uses 3 operand format.

In 2011 Q3, AMD Opteron 6200 "Interlagos" (16 cores/16 Threads/8 Bulldozer modules) replaces AMD Magny-cours (12 cores/12 Threads).

In 2012, there AMD Opteron with 20 cores/20 threads/10 Bulldozer modules.

For math array geared processor, there's AMD Llano and Trinity.

@Hammer
that is using the GPU tech integrated in the CPU package we are only concerned about the flops per core here, as you can add a mounstrous GPU to such a system and have overall Gflops way stronger thant the weak (for today) 600 stream processors.

Amd without integrated (very weak in comparison to external) GPU is comparable certainly not leaps and bounds better.

P.S on your last message:
still per core they don't do much better, they need more cores and a gpu otherwise no show, besides $1750 for just the CPU? And people here were complaining about the x1000
