Software News   Software News : RunInUAE r5 released - Just double-click to run inside UAE!
   posted by ChrisH on 14-Jul-2011 12:23:10 (6073 reads)

RunInUAE is the easiest & most fool-proof way to run Classic (68k) Amiga games & software on AmigaOS4, especially if you have an AmigaForever CD.

See read more for more.

This release has various small improvements to RunInUAE:
* Reduced the need for an Amiga Forever CD (just supply your own Kickstart files.)
* Improved WHDLoad compatibility.
* Improved E-UAE compatibility, accuracy & performance.
* Fixed an installation bug.
* Fixed RunInUAE to (hopefully!) work on Update 3 of OS4.1.
* Added support for DMS disk images.
* and more![/b]

You can download it from here:
RunInUAE.lha

Details of the changes:
* If you do not have an Amiga Forever CD, you no-longer have to supply files from a Workbench 3.1 disk (as a suitable fake WB3.1 will be created).

* Improved WHDLoad compatibility, by adding the "kick34005.A500" & "kick40068.A1200" files, which are needed by some games (such as Lucas Arts adventures).

* Various tweaks to E-UAE's configuration, to improve emulation compatibility, accuracy & performance. Heavily based on DAX's suggestions.

* Fixed an installation bug where RunInUAE might not run right automatically (until it had been run once manually).

* Improved patching of Workbench, to hopefully work on all versions of OS4, including Update 3 for OS4.1.

* Added support for DMS disk images (works the same as ADFs).

* Added option to not change Workbench 3.1's screenmode prefs.

* Added a Help menu item (also recognises the Help key).

* Mason's pretty icons are now used for folders & E-UAE's icon.

What is RunInUAE?
RunInUAE is intended to make it incredibly easy to run old Amiga games on Amiga OS4, and it comes with an easy installer, so that you can:

* Run almost any HD installed 68k game (or program) inside E-UAE, by simply double-clicking on it! Including WHDLoad & JOTD JST installed games.

* Run ADF & DMS games by double-clicking them. (Needs a little bit of manual set-up if you don't have at least OS4.1 Update 1.) Otherwise just drag & drop them onto RunInUAE's icon in AmiDock or it's AppIcon.

* Run CD32 & CDTV games from real or virtual CDs. (Compatibility is not great.)

* The installer can set-up E-UAE with full-speed Sam-optimised settings. But it can also use your existing E-UAE settings if you want.

* The installer will copy the necessary Kickstart ROMs off an Amiga Forever CD, if you don't already have them installed.

* You do *not* need to set-up any assignments, nor create or edit any cryptic scripts or config files, for it to work! (Unlike alternative solutions.)

If not, there is also DosBox (faster than UAE - 386DX 25 MHz performance even on SAM). VGA versions of some games are even in some cases a little bit better than AGA versions (eg. more sound/music effects, animations etc.).

How fast is emulation speed on productivity software? For instance how fast would Pixel Pro or some other 68k only apps..?

Until we get JIT-enabled E-UAE, you should not expect E-UAE to give more than about vanilla A1200 level performance, and therefore fancier (CPU heavy) productivity software is probably not usable.

OTOH, most 68k productivity software (unless it does something stupid like bang the h/w) should already run (very fast!) on AmigaOS4 without the need for E-UAE or RunInUAE.

Assuming you are talking about AGA games which run on a vanilla A1200, I would *imagine* they would be full speed, but I do not have such hardware to confirm that.

How good is Cd32 joypad support and CD32 , CDTV emu? (any titles known working?)

RunInUAE's manual explains this in more detail:
http://cshandley.co.uk/runinuae/index.htm#4_4

I can report that Liberation (Captive 2) works quite nicely, and it happens to be one of my favourite games! Off the top of my head (it was some time ago I tested them), I recall the following also work: D-Generation, Super Frog & Syndicate. Games with (inaudible!) soundtracks that I recall work: Alfred Chicken, Benefactor, Exile (not sure about controls), Pinball Fantasies & Speedball 2

Subwar 2050 *may* work (I don't know how to play it!).

Fears will not work, but I just realised how I can get it (and possibly a few more) games to work...

I've now gotten Fears to work, and Whales Voyage to boot (dunno how to play it, so cannot test).

Not sure if these booted before, but they do now:
* Super Stardust (seems fine).
* Fury Of The Furries (actually worked before but I forgot to mention).
* Akira (although the game is so crap you may wish it didn't run!).
* Worms (Sadly no weapon selection due to lack of joypad buttons).
* Wing Commander (but the colours are totally messed up for some reason).

On my peg2 they all works almost as should. But not perfectly smooth by default. For example in AladdinAGA i set frameskip to 1 to make it works fine (and still, it make sense, and keys responsivity a bit start to be not so reactive). For KidChaos and SlamTilt i lower the sound freq, to make it works better. In other words, 1ghz peg2 its "almost" fine, and all is playable, but i think 1.2 or 1.5ghz will be the better :)

There is a video which i do year ago (through not over RunInUae, but via GlUae, but UAE binary are the same, so make no difference in end in terms of emulation). On video you can see ,that sometime 1ghz/peg2 works on the "maximum". I.e. kidchaos sometime a bit (a very bit, but still visibly), jerky. Slamtilt in some heavy place also do the same. Of course you can see on the video that is all fine enough, but not perfect as one can expect. On that video i show:

Aladdin
KidChaos
Ruff&Tumble
SlamTilt Pinball
SuperFrog
SuperStardust
Gods

Almost all games are AGA, except i think few (ruff&tumble and goods).

As you can see, peg2/1ghz its good enough for, but not perfect of course. And its enough to emulate vanilla-aga-1200-games. But personally i prefer to have a bit more cpu speed. 1.5 or 2ghz will be enough for me :)

That is not necessarily true. Thanks to DAX, RunInUAE's latest default config has been very heavily optimised for performance & accuracy, and may well outperform whatever GlUae comes with.

would it be difficult to port the last UAE version to PowerPC?

I not use any default configs, i make my own of course. Because (imho) its just unpossible to create any magic-default-config, which will works fine for every-every (expectually AGA) game or demo. For example, for SuperStardusAGA, to make it working normally, i make some tweaks and changes in config file, which none of other games have. Also for some games i need lower the freq, for others are not. For some i need set frameskip, for others not. Not to say that i personally prefer to play in window-mode , and for removing all those black-areas at top-bottom-left-right sides, you need usually different sizes of window for every game (which can't be the same for all the games by one config), which need manually calculate by re-running the game/demo again and again, while it will not looks good.

So, imho, there is no possible to have one "cool config" for all the games/demos/apps. I think that database for every possible game, with cool tweaks and settings, for different machines, for different modes (win/full-screen) , are pretty good idea, but who will make that database ?:) I can only provide optimized and working configs for games and demos which i like, and only for peg2 (in window and fullscreen modes) , if some one need it of course.

OK, that's fine then.

Certainly true, but it is possible to make a Pretty Damn Good default config, which users can then tweak if they feel like it (I suspect most won't). Which is what RunInUAE does (users can create per-game settings which modify the default pretty good config).

Exactly, that's why I don't think it's practical. Cloanto are trying to do something like that for AmigaForever, but it is a humungous task, and even then I believe their configs are only designed for original disk images, not the (typically cracked) ADF images that you can download.

yes, I meant up to date with the Win version; I guess this is the goal of P-UAE project...

@kas1e
The final goal of classic reproduction under OS4 should be 1:1 rendition of classic machines, in both performance and look (so blocky windowed games on a LCD will not do if we want to be really picky).

Please take a look at THIS guide I wrote a while back.

When using a Picasso96 native 320x256 150hz screen mode (non-double scanned as per the above guide) RunInUae R5 gives perfect results out of the box with decent machines such as Sam460EX (for example SuperStardust works perfectly no tweeks needed, same for the greatest majority of commercial games).
RunInUae is configured to avoid stutterings and other problems related to compatibility and overall rendition quality (and even without a CRT it still provides the best out of the box experience in both ease of use and performance).

My friend Kyle has both monitors (LCD and CRT) connected to the same ATI card, when the classic non-doublescanned res fires up, the LCD goes in standby and he gets perfect classic quality (both authentic look and scrolling smoothness) and when he exits, the hi-res workbench appears again on the LCD, best of both worlds.

My usual advise to anyone serious about classic emulation is to get both a CRT monitor ($30 fo a 15") and RunInUae R5, it's almost like purchasing a classic and stuffing it in your OS4 computer, those that tryed are not going back, there must be a reason!

Lack of 68k compatibility really throttled a lot of classic users from going to next gen os4/ppc systems due to this back in 2002 on..

Well I found that for most of the programs I liked they worked on OS4. Some things like DPaint struggled since they were written for Amiga hardware. Not that it helped, but some programs that didn't work were found to really be not compatible to AmigaOS or badly written, so only worked by accident on real machines.

And with games, the point of OS4 wasn't to run Amiga games, so it didn't matter what games worked or not. And in any case, most games that didn't work were real Amiga games banging the hardware. And if you want to play those games properly as they were designed you shouldn't use an emulator anyway which IMHO makes the experience worse as it's not as perfect as the real thing. As real as it looks or as fast as your hardware is a modern machine just doesn't have sprites, deal playfields or hardware scrolling nor four channel sound so the experience will always be fake.

I know a guy who says it's the same as the real thing on his PC with WinUAE. Ah, no it's not. Especially when you hook up the PC to a VGA-TV converter and run in on an old TV with constant interlace!
