Apparently the Amiga 500 was £499 at launch in 1987, which is the equivalent of £1077 or €1235 in today's money. It's not as different as it initially looks (price-wise anyway - I doubt the original Commodore would ever have come out with a case like that...)

Everyone has different preferences on case choice. I quite like it as imho its distinctive & yet understated & the AmigaOne 500 logo goes very well on that central silver piece. If they used & more expensive case & included a keyboard, that extra expense would add to an already unavoidably expensive product. The higher price would put more potential customers off. The naming is certainly a very positive step.

I don't know what's worse; the cheapish-looking case, the high price, or the waiting period for the "secret" which turned out as non-news.

Feel free to disagree but this case just gives Amiga a bad name, sorry. It doesn't have the retro feel neither the class look of quality PC cases, the Amiga sticker just looks out of place, the whole thing looks like something from the Iwin era. And we haven't seen the inside yet.

Hints @ACube: if you really want to sell a complete product look at better cases, better make it a HTPC. The price is rather high, if someone pays 1100+ euros he would expect something special and distinctive (like the original Walker case) or at least better than the average PC case and peripherals. Make the SSD version the default; it would help building a better image of the product. And in the future, please, no more false alarms.

In an ideal world we would need a better product line, e.g. an SAM4x0 based system in a compact style that starts from 500€ (including AmigaOS) upto 800€ in order to build a sufficient user base, an over-the-top X1000 system @1300€ for the developer or serious/wealthy user, and maybe a Natami system @300€ for the retro user/gamer that also comes as a PCI card solution for the bigger systems. Maybe a Saudi prince buys everything that can/should be bought resolving every legal dispute and manages to bring Hyperion/Morphos/AROS to the same table.

So it's a SAM 460 in an ugly PC case that has been rebranded an 'AmigaOne 500', well that's amazing isn't it.

So what's the big secret then, that the new name is official (whatever than means)?

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

I was once glad to see the healthy cynicism take over amigadom - because lets face it, it was sad when people were getting taken in by prepay schemes - $50 off coupons, what have you.

But now, jump ahead a few years, here we have something entirely different. Hardware up for offer, for our small community.

You know, I'm glad to see this iMac like pricing - real, not mythical hardware, from a reliable company...advancing the platform, even if incrementally.

The branding is nice, the choice - take it or leave it, but its a real choice, up for consideration.

Even though this thread is littered with the usual dimwits and even a few people still moaning about there own inabilities to be part of a niche market... It is still a darn sight easier on the eyes than the likes of similair threads on other forums...

The thing that these other types know but won't admitt to themselves is the modern Amiga is here to stay and its going to overshadow there negative misplaced energy or as they insist there realistic appraisal of the situation... yeah right, I'd have better things to do myself than lurk just to post my all important insight on any matter I dislike...

I'll be buying a few of these systems I'd say over the years to come... buying one perhaps early next year, this will be my 6th real modern Amiga OS4.x.x machine...

Reminds me how I supported the older models and I know you don't want to know how many I own of those...

It good to see ACube bring the Sam460 into the AmigaOne range. If it helps to sell more machines and increase the number of Amiga NG users then I'm all in favour.

Surely a little disappointment after the marketing campaing.
The price is not too bad for a full AmigOS system.
I like the original Amiga style fonts, otherwise the case is not good looking.

Anyway, nice to see AmigaOS HW names becoming "together".

(perhaps A-eon's Amigaone case was too pricey for ACube's use)

i think, the brandunification is absolutely necessary and the case looks good! come on guys, show a little bit more support and respect for acube - they deserve it!!! i would love to see the classic/commodore amiga(one) font also on the x1000. looks much better than the actual amigaos4.1 font/logo. its also better than the logo from the late 90s because amiga inc did so much bad things to the amiga community (by the way, amiga technologies/international was ok! a shame, that escom went bankrupt).. i mean, jesus - they/he still doe/s bad things to the amiga brand name... in a perfect future amigaos,morphos,aros,acube,aeon, etc. would be united as one company under the amiga brand using the OLD AMIGA-LOGO. that would be damn cool. its a shame to see all these wars between the different camps again and again... damn..

To get new users, Amiga needs a economy computer, price less than 600€, hopefully less than 500€

Amiga Os is and will be hoppy OS, so I wouldn't mind if scepcs would be similar than Efica, just with possibility to add more memory. Efice would have been perfect starter without memory limitations and OS4 licence.

Efice price with memory socket would have even more low than it was with 128mb ram.

Complete computer with Os4 license would have been less than 300€

I would think it took off/most people bought it at £399 with some sort of software bundle a year later. Additionally compared to what else you could buy for that money at the time it was amazing "bang for the buck" hardware and software. If you spend £1000 now on x86 hardware you can get something pretty amazing. "Bang for buck" you could probably get something for £300 to out-perform an AmigaOne 500, so you would have to be pretty fanatical to buy it for over £1000.

I am not trying to put anything down, but as "surprises" go this isnt one, its predictable in this market. Without even a roadmap for OS4 this is just pushing more users towards Natami/AROS etc (lower cost/lower risk/just as much fun, which is no bad thing IMHO).

How do you know there's no roadmap?
I am sure among the Hyperion management and the key developers there is a roadmap, just not publicly available.

Whilst Aros has cheap PC hardware, guess what because it is a cheap PC, the Natami is not going to anywhere near as cheap. The speculation was that it would be in line with NG Amigas simply because of volumes.

There is a lot of pessimistic comments in this thread. Acube should be commended, they have unified the Sam systems into one Amiga NG brand, and Amigaone is that brand.
They haven't manufactered/sold an Amigaone before so this is a new "product" and worthy of the news item, and marketing campaign. We've all seen hardware re-packaged, re-branded and re-launched in the PC world, som why should this be any different.

You have no influence over ACube, so either accept it and buy it, or don't.
It's your choice, but I don't see how complaining because something is not to your taste in a public forum achieves anything.

Anyway, I like the case, I like the Amigoane 500 product, and I like what ACube are doing.

I disagree.

'The Amiga sticker looks out of place'? What - on an Amiga? Yes it's just a case but it has a 460 inside. This isn't iWin or CBM USA - it actually has the 460 in it which runs OS4.

Yes it would have been nicer to have a custom case in the style of the Fantasy - that would have sold a lot more - but it's hardly iWin.

There are other options. If you don't like the AmigaOne 500, you can buy one of a dealer's complete system or just the mainboard to built your own system. We have some more choices now

That may be so but I think calling it after the AmigaOne is misleading a bit. It's not an AmigaOne board and by that I mean it fails to meet the following requirements: A desktop PPC CPU with AltiVec and L2/L3 caches onboard. A UBoot that supports all features a standard A1 does. Support for the A1 SLB and booting Linux from an a1boot.conf file. As well as dual boot support for OS4 and Linux with no extra boot partitions needed if FFS2 is used. I'm afraid the Sam boards didn't meet this requirement last time I checked. So unless these are fulfilled technically I don't think it's an AmigaOne.
