Internet News   Internet News : Portable Amiga in the works, rumor mill starts churning
   posted by Petah on 23-Oct-2011 10:23:43 (40423 reads)
Although not yet officially announced, a new and portable Amiga is getting prepared for launch. According to a statement made by a spokesperson of AmigaOS developer Hyperion Entertainment, the Amiga - for the moment referred to as a "netbook" computer - is already running AmigaOS in a yet-to-be-disclosed version.

Supposedly, the new netbook Amiga is will be "sourced in a special configuration from an OEM". The manufacturer in question is, just like the price tag, the launch date and the hardware specifications, currently unknown paving the way for further speculation and rumors. The netbook Amiga will set a mark in computer history as the first portable Amiga to see the light of the day since the Amiga 1000 was introduced to the US market in 1985.

Yay! Dual-booting AmigaOS and Android would be dope. Even if AFAIK the latest PPC build is 1.5; however it seems Ice-cream Sandwitch will be open-source after they release the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, so maybe a PPC port will be feasible (but I doubt it will run on a 400 or 800Mhz netbook)?

Probably, but we can still hope for miracles.

Even rebranded LimeBook would be good enough for me (considering such pleasant estimated price).

The day this community will realize Amiga will not be the Next Microsoft (success and price wise) it will be a good day.
There will be no Amiga NG inside Supermarkets (right next to groceries) no world domination, and "NO" many other things.
What there will be is Amiga HW and OS for aficionados, many of which never went NG after 3.9.
Those can be brought back in the future, if Hyperion does things right.
Lately they are improving a lot and learning from past mistakes (such as the decision to release updates often from now on, better communication thanks to their forum,the new website, cheap netbook etc.), so I am happy about these new decisions/direction.

Well, I use Android 1.6 on my HTC Tatoo, and its quite usable to do what is expected of Smartphone, wouldn`t mind it on nettbook too .... but would prefer Linux if you ask

Microsoft is not price wise, but uses other methods
Nevermind, yes, the glory days are past and size of the community tells it all.

@vox

"FreeScale PowerPC 800Mhz"
I think it's a typo. It should read 800MIPS.

@Hypex & Shufflepuck

I'm beginning to realize how far behind I am in technology knowledge. I really didn't know the difference between a Netbook and NAS. Whatever it is, it runs AmigaOS 4.x for a decent price. I've been looking for an inexpensive replacement for my dead A1XE. This may be my answer.

@pavlor

I'll wait for the final price before getting excited because there are too many variables that could affect final prices ($300-$500, VAT, OS license, no final specs...) but for me it sounds better than previous efforts like Sam&x1000 just because this will increase user base much more than Sam&x1000 will.

I'll opt for a powerbook with MorphOS but this new netbook sounds like a nice plan if you want to run OS4 on an Efika-like environment and let's hope the price is right this time.

Lets say that the netbook would cost 350 with 400Mhz
and 450 with maxed 800Mhz processor, witch would you guys rather have?
I would gladly pay 100 more for dubbel the speed!

So lets hope that hyperion think about this, but I will bye the netbook even if it is
400Mhz

Considering they didn't revile the processorspeed its probably 400Mhz

@PhantomInterrogative

You could be right and it even has a built in screen! Hey I read the screen is a 12 inch. It's the Extended Version of the Amiga! LOL! :-

Portable Amiga

Although specs are subject to change, I hope the final product boots into Workbench and has
Wi-Fi
2x USB ports
VGA Out

IMHO a Laptop style keyboard and "mouse" pad are fine for quickly doing something a few clicks away, but I prefer to use a real keyboard and mouse for anything else. VGA Out would be a nice bonus for hooking up a monitor or projector.

@ vox

Im glad you can see what I think I am seeing happen out there in our world.

And yes this amiga netbook will be the biggest step forward, especially if AOS works well on it, many amigans will buy, and many new potential users may come onboard to check out our AOS due to the "Nice Price"

QUOTE gebrochen
sorry to inform you, the logical path would be to port it to ARM one day in the future, as ARM is taking over, Give it years and ARM will replace intel / x86 archtiecture potentially like x86 did to PPC at the time of its era.

Quote vox
Seeing Android first ported to ARM, as well as Win8 planned to have ARM port this is quite true, even ARM is much less powerful then x86. Byt is cheap and enough for portable devices. Even PPC SOCs could stand a chance there if they had Android and current Linux.

Yes, going ARM would be great, but at the current state of affairs OS4 nettop is
great step forward to what kids use nowadays

Yes, also like you say, just having Android 2.0 ported to PPC and current Linux (like YellowDogLinux) would make PPC nettop/desktop devices and PPC Boards wery usable.

People complain a lot on hardware specs that seem low for x86 grunt numbers, but nice small and optimized OSs like Linux,AmigaOS 4 and Android are can be very usable on them

Affordable OS4 for the people - finally

P.S.
Just placed SSolies speech (where nettop was 1st mentioned) also on
You Tube

A lot of nice promises for OS4 future usability too ...

If they squeeze all those to OS 4.2, that will be a great release, worth of re-paying!

just discovered this news, I have been so glad about the AmigaOne X1000 but I wasn't 110% thrilled about it because it is a desktop computer. I love the portability and energy saving laptops and netbooks and gadgets and Amiga needs to make more of them. I learned today about the AmigaOne 500 which is great news. TWO new Amigas being made. But now if we could get a netbook!!

And then I discover this development for an Amiga Netbook!! AND it is expected to price similar to other netbooks!! I will get one once it is released!!!! I am saving money right now.

As for a port to x86? If you do port it to x86, please do not drop support for POWER/PowerPC. I actually value the uniqueness of a computer system and I also like the lightweight of it, not bloatware. I do not like Mac OS X at all, or Windows, or Linux. I was much too young back then to know about Amigas when they were first released. You have got a new member to the Amiga community and you have had one for the past couple of years. Amiga is not dead. it is a Sleeping Giant, and your community is not as small as you think. x86 is silly and even sillier is the evil Adobe Flash Player, which is one of the companies that does not suppoert POWER hardware. Who cares; Finally there is a .webm video for the HTML5 of the Internet. The ARM processors are in all the gadgets, and they do not have fans. I am pretty sure that they would need fans if they had x86/Wintel!! ARM is better and more affordable at the same time. Even Microsoft uses ARM (and also POWER in its xBox) and Apple's iPod/iPad/iPhone uses the ARM processors and that is a bunch of facts that neither company wants you to know about!! There have been so many commercials about the Wintel Processors and ...

never mind about that; The point is that if Amiga is to port to anything, port to ARM. It would be better than x86. Perhaps.... Amiga... could be the first computer system to widely support ARM? And then if x86 gets pushed to the side by ARM, then Amiga will be known for being the first to support ARM?

I value uniqueness so much with a computer, not another x86 PC clone lol.

This is great news about an Amiga netbook. Perhaps after a while they will also make a product line of Netbooks...one with a giant screen on it to watch videos. with built in card slots. I would like to see a Netbook with an Amiga keyboard layout obviously. I will buy an Amiga netbook every year and begin collecting them.
