Software News   Software News : mui-mplayer port from morphos to amigaos4 released
   posted by kas1e on 24-Oct-2011 20:16:06 (18458 reads)
Hi all

We with Deniil, with big help from Fab (of course, and as usuall :) ) , release a first version of mui-mplayer port from morphos. Check os4depot for it (in upload query for now).

screenshot

There is many thinks to say, but in brief:

The advantages over the our current os4 port: newer mplayer code, better structurisation and code itself, mui-gui with all the stuff , better integration of streaming (working over bsdsocket.library directly), no SDL, sound over AHI, rendering over cgx_wpa and all the other pluses about which know only Fab as he author.

The minus now only one: No overlay. Because of it, in full-screenmode you have no scalling (to avoid slowdowns). Overlay will be implemented pretty soon (i hope).

If you want command line : use it from the shell

If you want GUI: run from the icon (tooltype GUI). If you disable that tooltype, then from the icon it will just ask for the file which need to open.

PS: its is _NECESSARY_ to have update3 minimum, if you want to use GUI. Or, you need MUI from update3, which you can copy on older version of OS and it will works as well. Through, better to just have update3, to avoid any possible problems.

So as usuall thanks to Fab for his sources, to Thore who works on MUI, to Deniil who help with porting and to DeadWood for some help as well.

@kas1e

GCC3 and later introduced several (unknown) bugs and incompatibilities with older code, so it's just a sensible choice to use 2.95.3 to really control the core components.
For ports, it's another story, and we have all the recent GCC builds at hand if needed.

As for GDB, it's quite meaningless on our OSes. And if i remember correctly, i don't see you using it often when encountering a crash, that tells something. ;)

You remember, till the last year morphos developrs (every of them) say that GCC2 are enough, we not need GCC3 ! Now there is gcc3 (so, that all wa sbull).

GCC 3 and GCC 4 compilers has existed for MorphOS for years but not made public. Newer versions generate faster code in some cases but hey have also got bugs you dont find from GCC 2.

And i sure as hell would be interested in those projects as well including ambient port.

Being able to more easily port things from one OS to another is a good thing for all sides.

@tommysammy

More details is need it. When it crashes, how, and so on. As i know x1000 have altivec support, so should works. Or your crash is not at startup ?

That because GDB works buggy till update3 (they broken some stuff which need for GDB, and somethre from 4.1 it stop working, and start to working only now, on update3).

@tommysammy

Well, x1000 tests for now not so important, as it all covers by that NDA stuff. When it will be released for public, we can worry if something will still going wrong. There can be any possible problems , as the OS in the process of porting and so on.

Anyway, i will have that in mind of course.

Mui and Reaction are gui toolkits, while Ambient are fully not, its desktop-manager. Just like Workbench , or HyberBenh, or Dopus5, or ScalOS.

Don`t have hardware to use MOS, so yes, I get it wrong.
Thanks for correction. That makes it just matter of choice.

Like some of us here, I was always just for Workbench: even loved
Dopus (Magellan)`s ability to speed up things, never liked to use it as complete
WB replacement. ScalOS was nice upgrade to OS 3.x, is it ported to OS4 and how does it compare to standard WB?

Its only users create those wars. Its only users fear that one os will have something which not have other os. Its only users want to think, that only their os "only one and only best". @all Just for sake of crooss, did we all really want to start talk here what os are better ?:) Didn't it just _COOL_ when both oses have some the same programms ? Or still all that ego-crap have place, etc ?:)

All WB friendly apps and games, OWB, YAM, Hoolywood, Feeble Flies (68k for OS4) ... many examples of apps avail for both (sadly, not all) makes us quite equal. And its nice to say that MOS is faster and nicer in some areas (like PPC compatibility) but that should be motivation for OS4 to improve, not for supermacism (OS racism

Both OS`s uses PPC hardware, run 68k WB apps, are advanced development from OS 3.1 times (these roots and ablities also stand for AROS + portability, WiFi, nVIDIA drivers, advanced 3D implementation ...) so both "Butterfly" and "BoingBall" have a lot in common.
Yes, I am always sad because MorphOS didn`t evolve to AmigaOS 4 (there was no need to start back from OS 3.0 PPC porting) just because AmigaOS 4 would be way better today and there would be no this kind of fractioning. But that didn`t happen and I am glad that MorphOS has developed so far and also that survived Genesi downfall, just like it was critical for OS4 to survive Eyetech downfall.

And as always, hope that in time it could become one - real AmigaOS 5.0, not some AmigaInc promises with shared components, revenues and easier development, more users and unified support. Or at least that all avail PPC hardware can run both - would be glad to buy MOS licence too, just as I supported OS 3.5, OS 4.1 and Viva Amiga. And love MOS has "tryout" ability just as love AROS is free and running on almost anything. If all those features were as one (portable paid OS if it cannot be open source because MOS and OS4 team invested lot in development), but AmigaOS 5 or whatever name would be, would be a lot more succesful. However that is just a dream since a lot of people stil take sides.

Because for that, morphos need to port reaction, or, make opensourced version. How you think we update our mui now ? We loose hours and hours, days and weeks, just to reverse stuff and understand how it work and how to do it. We do it because of course, mos team will be not in interest to give us latest mui4 sources. And os4 team will not give reaction sources for free too.

Maybe OS4 team and MorphOS dev team could at least "swap sources of these two"?
(or something of similar feature worth) to enable progress and porting. Two donkeys on the hill never help.

Because any company suck. And ainc, and blablink, and Genesi too, btw. But we , as users, as 3d party programmers (or porters), should be the same child-close-minded, to have all that wars and problems ? That's why I do not support os4, Ainc....

Seen that Hyperion had badminded references to AROS and MOS legality in the past, but that has not appeared for years, right?
Hope such things will never happen again. Likewise said, its never the user thing and hope that companies / developer teams will learn something from the past.

Where can I purchase a copy of MUI4 for my Amigaone?
Where can I purchase a copy of MorphOS fo my Amigaone?

I would love to try out both, on my existing hardware, but I cannot afford new hardware to try them out.
I know it was my choice top purchase OS4 hardware, and I am extremely happy with that.
BUT.... I would love to try MorphOS, I might even like it.
I use predominatley 68k programs for work on my A1, and maybe MorphOS would be a better, faster, more stable option, I don't know, and probably never will know.
But if porting gives me more options, and possibly better programs, then I'm all for it. Choice is always good.

In all fairness OS4 has a head start on the porting MUI apps because of MUI3.9 on OS4, and I don't know how difficult it would be to develop an opensource reaction substitute, and even if such a substitute existed, would access be granted to the programs source to enable them to be ported.
But of course I forgot, OWB, and MPlayer, FFMpeg etc are already open source, so does anyone know of any Opensource apps that are only reaction based?

Salas00 already do initial version of opensourced reaction, but its in very, very initial form, and no one know if it will be in develop at all.

@all

Just to avoid problems like yesterday, i not upload it on os4depot , but firstly will put archive on some free-file-hosting, so , plz, everyone do tests (expectually on sams), and report back here if it works now.

Binary will auto-detect altivec when its need it, and will not use it , when its not available.

Hello,

Just played 16 .wmv file fine and the first .mpeg give, as result, the second DSI.

Maybe the decoder code by itself because all .wmv work fine untill now ? (I'm sure of nothing, just testing .
