Internet News   Internet News : Commodore Amiga Mini Pre Order Has Begun
   posted by damocles on 21-Mar-2012 4:52:07 (44411 reads)
After 20 years since the last Commodore Amiga was released, the first new Commodore Amiga will be released by mid May, and this time in a Mini case. It comes with two options, barebones and fully loaded with i7 2600K [3.5GHz Quadcore] + nVidia 430 (with it's own discreet 1GB of RAM).

Full details can be found at CommodoreUSA.

Ouch. What a sad state journalism is in when even PCWorld can make two dramatically incorrect statements in a single sentence.

At least this fellow got most of his "facts" straight:

It is "Darrin".

The's nothing sinister in me asking. I was just curious if that was actually you posting on that site with your real name while you prefer to use "Damocles" and "Dammy" on other sites (and probably other names too). Personally, I use "Darrin" everywhere I post. It saves confusion.

I'll risk that by saying that this has to be new low for this site when Moderator posts ANY personal information publicly...

@Rose

As this isn't information from this site at all, I would say it is not a new low. Again, no one is posting any kind of personal information from this site.

@ Rose,

Dammy posted it on the public site that was linked to. I was simply wondering whether it was actually him (the Avatar was his). Sorry if it offends anyone. That wasn't the intention.

If Dammy wants me to then I'll happy remove my post. The link however will remain.

Then it's propably ok if I paste link to your information from Eniro for example since it's not from this site... Slippery slope you know...

Not that I like Dammy too much but I think posting his name here wasn't his own choice. Specially given atmosphere in this thread. Surely everyone can dig it if they want but when MODERATOR posts it here in thread which basicly screams for blood is LOW.

As you can see it was damocles himself that posted the link to that site, so I think you're over reacting on this a little bit.

@zerohero

Call me crazy, but if Harry Hawk, Mgr of Communications for CUSA, had posted this news in the first place, instead of damocles, the thread might have turned out differently.
Then again, I have no clue why a communications director would be chosen over Dammy. THAT would make sense.

He might be one of the first authorized dealers, free soul given work where he will assemble first 10 Commodore Amiga Dammy models, install COS and support end users. Starting new religion of Amiga in his block, city or region / US state! ! If Barry is the maker, Leo is the Holy Spirit and Dammy is the son of the LCC. Sadly, with this religion you pay VAT and new added CUSA tax, instead no tax status. After all, its a business, not a charity.

OK, listen, discuss events and facts, not people. This is me, moderator hat off. This thread is already bad.

What would you do if you started the manufacturing of computers and took the names Commodore and Amiga?

Right from the start I said:

With just the Commodore name, I'd market a line of computers with pre-installed classic 8 bit and 16 bit emulators and also use my website to sell ADF images of games.

With the Amiga name I'd sell a range of custom cases for classic and NG Amiga solutions. Also, I'd look at selling FPGA based Amigas in full cooperation with people like MikeJ or the NATAMI team. I'd also use my website to sell pre-loaded SD cards with HDF images and ROMs for existing "Minimig" users and various ADF images.

So as you answer my question, many of the Amiga Community response.
The problem with that is that the revenue would not even be enough to pay for the right to use those names. It would certainly not be enough to buy the name rights.

It's a nice dream you have, but unfortunately only a dream!

In reality, we need a big sale to cover the cost of name rights and everything else needed to make your dream a reality.

What can you sell a lot of?
The answer of course is that you must sell what people buy, and what is it?

I know what it is not!
I know it's not PPC and it is not eight-bit games.

I can not say with certainty exactly what it is!
But I know it's x86, and I know it must be able to run MS Windows.
I do not know what is needed more but I think it will be more secure success if the product can be an aura of elegance and tradition. I hope that the "tradition" are computers with traces of classic Amiga and Workbench.

@linar

It doesn't need to run Windows to be called an Amiga.

I think you'd better tell Cloanto that.

They've managed to license the Amiga name, Kickstart ROMS and Workbench and they don't need to sell $3000 PCs to make a living.

Quite frankly, C=USA didn't need the Amiga name to start with and for all we know the reality might be that it costs them $1 per machine sold.

AmigaKit manages to operate as an Amiga hardware only company from an industrial estate in South Wales, employs several people and provides support all without the need to sell $3000 PCs.

I know what an Amiga is, and it isn't Linux and a sticker.

@darrin: i think the post revealing dammys name is way under the belt attempt. and that unregarded if he published it elsewhere or not and if he asked you to remove it or not. you have not even had the guts to post your own full surname, so id expect you should know for yourself what to do now, if you dont want aw.net to become moo-second-edition. you may have acted impulsive but you should reconsider.

This product is not an Amiga it just has the word "Amiga" slapped on it as a brand name.
in much the same way one could slap the name "Ipod" onto a GalaxyTab. It would still be a GalaxyTab but it would be branded Ipod & that doesnt make it an Ipod. (thank-God)

So when I see this product I cant take it seriously it sports 2 licensed brands, off shelf parts, a $20 or so engraving and is not the product after which it is fashioned (licensed or not $$$ is way to high)

worst of all call it the Amiga 1000X is just another stunt trying to make it look like the real thing after all how similar is the name to another product called the AmigaOne X1000 is it? does it seem like another WorkBench5 steamer or just me?
