Think you got the wrong end :) im referring to A-Eon producing the Nemo board from scratch and the understandable high price. But this Amiga Mini has no right to put a high price when yes it is just a off the shelf mob _________________ Cross-developer on Windows, OS3, OS4, Linux; Current Projects:- Nephele Cloud App OS4 UserProfile System OS4 AmigaOneXE OS4.1.6

are you sure this is a new motherboard built for this "mini amiga" and not a Chinese MoBo that costs 30$ (except cpu)?? Why someone should design and produce an x86 motherboard if there are a lot of cheaper alternative all around the world?? |
it is an off-the-shelf board, the ZOTAC Z68ITX-B-E. you can pick it up retail for between $180 and $200. the big price item is the processor, an intel core i7-2700k. you can pick that up at, say, newegg for around $340. remember that there are other costs as well: the blu-ray drive, the hard drive, the case, etc., plus the labor in florida to package it up for customers. so it's not just the costs of parts.
of course with bulk ordering the profit margin is still gigantic, but folks can piece one together themselves if they'd rather build one than pay the (rather high) cost of getting it through CUSA. they can even get a third-party to do logo-engraving for very little money indeed. in any case i'm stunned at the asking price, but am pleased they're doing a nice product -- even if it is something anyone with a web browser and an hour one afternoon can assemble themselves.

| Basicly their pricing strategy seems to be.
1. Find parts. 2. Do ~$10 engarving to case. 3. Multiply costs by 2. 4. ? 5. Profit. |

it seems you may not understand any production costs of making a small scale production batch of any type of circuitry, let alone a multi-layer pcb, using cpu which is used in mainly areas which have unlimited finance's (military) having a thorough Quality assurance procedure, which means the company will loose money if problems occur. |
I completely understand. But I would never make the choice to use an EOL product to begin with. _________________ Support AROS sponsor a developer.

It's their call, not mine. They are offering the barebones model that comes with a blu-ray so you can build your own. _________________ Dammy

ok, guys. let's analyze this a little more objectively. unlike the custom systems which most of us are used to, the new 'commodore amiga' is something anyone can actually build themselves using off-the-shelf components. so how much would that cost? i mean, to get an exact replica of the machine our friends in florida are offering?
using numbers from online retailer newegg, i drew up a little price list to see what we could build ourselves. here is the bill of materials:
* ZOTAC Z68ITX-B-E: $210 (source) * intel core i7 2600K 3.5GHz: $340 (source) * 1TB SATA hard drive: $110 (source) * 2 x 8GB DDR3 SO-DIMMs: $149 (source) * intel mini-PCIe wireless card: $19 (source) * wesena HTPC ITX2 case: $65 (source) * engraving services $20 (see previous post) * linux mint: free * amiga forever: $30 (source)
now, we also need to consider shipping as well. and the time involved to assemble, but just the parts listed above puts us at $943. and that's without looking for the best retail deal, to say nothing of the breaks we'd get if we ordered in bulk, as CUSA would do.
that puts a bit of a different spin on it, eh? that brand is apparently worth a fortune.

why do they call this an Amiga? It just isn't. |
It's an Amiga in that the McEwen says it can be. There's of course no reason to do so other than to screw with the genuine Amiga market. Today's Commodore is simply a willing party to help McEwen waggle his thing at us, nothing more.
As for the barebones price, the site doesnt' say if the included Bluray drive is a writer or not. A reader is about US$110, so that's still a ripoff for $345. If it's a burner, and can burn 100GB and 128GB BDR-XL disks (, then perhaps it's a reasonable total. Non-XL burners are less than US$150, some at $100.
Without them saying it's an XL burner, I'll assume it's not, and this have to assume that the "Amiga" sticker costs about $155. ($65case + $125bluray)
I just found an XL burner for $140. Screw any chance of me thinking the barebones is reasonably priced. (The Teac drive I found was $270 so total with that was reasonable until I found this one, though I doubt that Teac drive is in that barebones kit)Last edited by billt on 21-Mar-2012 at 04:30 PM. | Congrats on new product, but intro line of "first new Commodore Amiga" sounds like a real joke.
$345 barebone
Nice way of going with 16GB RAM, even price is high _________________ Future Acube and MOS supporter, fi di good, nothing fi di unprofessionals. Learn it harder way!

Seems like idea of designing new A500/A1200 like case is dropped.
So expect nothing more of next models.
