PATA is just a name-change from ATA, which is the actual name of the actual standard that some people even after 18 years still insist on calling IDE. The reason it got changed was to distinguish from SATA, which is the same protocol but on a serial wire instead of in parallell form.

Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C). Sometimes I don't even know what people mean.

@Seya

>seriously, but in 2012, is so necessary an update of serial.device and IDE?

Only untill recently, most DVD devices were mainly PATA.
If people want to copy data from old drives, they might need PATA.
PATA works with most CF-IDE adapters.
There is huge amount of free IDE HDDs available.

Serial interface is still used for many things.
For example x1000 can use thousands of MIDI devices via RS232-midi adapter.
Also RS232 based Vacom devices can easily be used, also those are freely available from trash.
etc...

SB600 has a lot of features, it is "nice" if they are made usable.

>i never seen more and ide or serial device in the market..only SATA 2 or SATA 3

USB is the modern replacement for RS232 serial devices.
btw. also SATA, SATA2 and SATA3 are all serial devices (serial IDE).
(IIRC, x1000 is the only PPC desktop in the world that has SATA2 onboard, is it so?)

Serial is the modern trend. Also PCI has gone serial.

Maybe because a lot of ppl want to install their old A1 ide drives in the X. The price of sata drives has more then doubled & a lot of older ide drives lying around to use.

There is always a reason for what is done.
