You are reading this wrong: You are NOT subsidising A-Eon customers. It is the other way around. The price you pay for the drivers is a artificially lowered price because A-Eon have paid towards your driver development.

The fee is not large. You are entitled to the 0.32 driver which ACube and AEON have already paid for. AEON have exclsuively paid a substantial fee for development to continue past that point. I think the situation is very fair.

You can't get these upgraded cards on the peg2. I think it was becuase a firmware update would be required, and seems that won't happen. This is a step towards the coming 3d drivers. The newer gfx cards supports shaders and other effects that older cards doesn't have.

You buy a system, turn it on & it works, want a new card? make sure the driver you have will work or buy a driver for it, no one is getting cheated. If you can't afford the cost of a new driver, then you won't be spending $200 plus for a new gfx card either.

i actually understand that one likely pays for development one way or the other. on aros there are bounties even if most of the development time and effort is barely covered by that, its understandable that one might want to gather some funds. what i dont understand about this particular issue is in what way are the radeon-hd graphic cards better than older cards like 9200 or the like in 2d operation? i understand the drivers are pretty basic, plain2d there is no3d, no support for whatever hardware acceleration other than blitting. what is in this case advantage of such a card?

It would need to be an large bounty which will take a long time to fill with the required cash.

This way means that drivers are available *now* for users to enjoy because A-EON paid for full time development on these drivers. AmigaOS is very much enhanced by having this software support in 2012.

Why wait years with a bounty and part-time development?

it has hardware acceleration and full compositing capabilities. newer cards are quicker, and have DVI, so the same question can be asked of any platform.

radeon9250 card laying arond here has dvi as well i seem to remember. so 2d on newer cards is faster? never suspected that, since i believed they are mostly 3d optimized.

The 9250 supports 3D, overlay, & miniGL, the Radeon HD cards are 2D only, until Gallium3D is out. The 9250 is the better choice if you watch videos. This is why some are installing 2 gfx cards in their X1000, best of both Worlds for now.

Just wanted to say WELL DONE to everyone involved in this endeavor. Looking forward to the updated driver on my X1000. Honestly, for non-X1000 owners I think the price is fair. If I could put one of these cards in my Amigaone XE I would gladly order.

well...
So saying my own toughts about that (imho bad) policy was such a bad thing? I think not onestly...
And the worst thing was that we have to pay for a less than half driver(since no 3D available atm)...
And since A1s wasnt so cheap why dont simply make a much elegant way like a bounty for that(in amiga land good boutyes will filled up in really few days and maybe with much amount than selling the requested thing)...
So plz dont blame guys that simply say their opinions...
I was an Amiga user but dont like that way of doing things...and what's bad in saying that? Since I love AmigaOS I like to see it grow up in nice way...that way instead, imho, simply give us bad publicity outside our world and really we had enough of that imho...
