   posted by OlafS25 on 16-Jul-2012 12:07:07 (6138 reads)
I have made a small update to 1.5.1. because I have a working version of Netsurf 68k (2.6 or 2.7, 2.8 and 2.9 not working at the moment)

A screenshot showing Netsurf "in action":

All improvements:

Added:
Netsurf 68k

Updated:
Wazp3D (Warp3D)
newest Roms (14.7.)
new Shortcuts (ALT I for Netsurf)

Full Download:

Only Netsurf 68k:

When integrating it yourself: it needs stacksize 500000 and can only be started from CLI (not by clicking on icon)

this only confirms it is a joke. none of You really have an idea how this software will run on an Amiga. Not only you* can't make netsurf run at deceny speed and now there is a hope you can make OWB do it....

i think i have some approximation, as i tried joerg strohmayers version on my a4k/060 way before, im sure fabs browser works better when it comes to gui, but doubt if the engine gained any noticeable speed. if so it might be (barely) "usable" on "classic"..

On purely non-javascript sites maybe. And this is really a big maybe because handling of a whole website document model (for javascript purposes) is going to cost a lot more resources (ram especialy)

ohm and just to add to my previous posts. with decent developer it seems you really can do something with netsurf to make it really work, and it would be 100 times easier than making OWB work on classics. with OWB you have no chance.

well, owb runs on efika right? and i think jason is a decent developer. and toni too, though, there is more important stuff to take care of than owb. browsers are bonus. so lets come back to this subject when i have network running on my a4k under aros and then when i will able to test owb on my a4k, okay?

i don't really mean to demotivate you and all. all i mean is to point how unrealistic your goals are. there is no effort to optimize the software. no at all. lets compile it and see what happens... but this is how whole aros seems to be*

@kiero

You could for example show us some Aros code you figured needs optimizing
and show us how to fix it, that's not too much to ask IMHO.

Do you really see AROS 68k as a way to run on real Amiga? Seriously?

why not? it runs here. id say wanderer is the main showstopper yet, even if cod3r is certainly right, kernel could be better optimized.
working from the shell, with basic apps is already significantly more comfortable than plain 3.1, perhaps even 3.9 situation. netsurf will run about the same speed as on aos im certain as soon as i can make aros connect to my router, i could benchmark it with a local page later on.

what i doubt is if aros68k/wanderer will ever be as snappy as workench, but thats a trade off. luckily there is magellan and a number of other file managers/launchers.

of course a number of aros solutions that may remain over sized for real 68k. lets see how gallium behaves when it finally runs, but my previous (softpipe) testing indicated it could be usable. currently something has been broken, i hope temporarily.

i may not be able to run netsurf on my real hardware just now, there is setpatch bug to fix that prevents it without workaround but just some results under uae. same configuration once started from my beefed up 3.9+ partition ond once from aros68k current nightly, running exactly the same executable of netsurf from the same location on locally saved copy of amigaworld.net and bbc homepage.

test repeated few times.

the result is:
amigaworld.net - aos: 0.8-0.9s
amigaworld.net - aros: 0.7s

bbc -aos 2.0s
bbc - aros 2.2s

edit: put the commas ina wrong place, just noticed

as you see the results are about the same, which is no wonder as ixemul library provides almost complete infrastructure to run sdl ports, including mem allocator for what i know.

funy is aros seem to load simple pages faster, but complex a little slower. all in all not bad i think..

okay for complettness sake ive opened the both example pages locally on my cv64 060/50 equipped a4k desktop. again the same version of netsurf, completely the same conditions, except the harddisk is currently hooked up to internal ide controller rather than faster cybppc conroller on the accelerator (anyway it is only an old 4gb test drive that provides 7mbs max throughtput both under aos and aros).

now: amigaworld net loads within 12s
and the same bbc homepage as above shows up at about 36s and finishes loading at some 55s.

now, this is what might illustrate what is objectively possible. right?

just tested at another controller, which gave me about the same result with the same hard disk. now the results seem to document that on such a real world task, aros68k on an amiga 060/50 is about 15-30 times slower than aros68k/aos on winuae running on a mid range i7 pc. still not that bad i guess.

@OlafS25

Keep up the good work, this is a journey and your work and developers is brilliant, just like people moaned about Aros x86, now they see it coming good, same with Aros 68k, hard work and dedication will win out. Oh and yes, it does need faster hardware to run it, but that's life.
