Announcement   Announcement : Results from DJNick's Sam460ex bounty
posted by djnick on 16-Jun-2013 9:40:44 (5967 reads)
Greetings to Amiga friends. I decided to release what I've done up to now after Amiga community bought me Sam460ex motherboard in February 2012:

- I've designed a complete AmigaOS.net web site:
http://www.amigaos.net/

Credits page:
http://amigaos.net/content/88/website

  • Created 1st AmigaOS4+ theme called "Crystal". With this theme you will get:
    • skinned toolbars and windows
    • new mouse graphics
    • redesigned requester icons and all menus / submenus
    • my boot and error sound samples [composed in Renoise tracker]
    • my Amiga Encounter wallpaper in 6 different resolutions (800x600; 1024x768; 1280x1024, 1440x900, 1680x1050 and 1920x1080px)
    • redesigned MUI preferences so it matches Crystal theme set
    • changed Filer preferences so its default colors matches Crystal theme set
    • added new skin for AmiDock and its horizontal and vertical subdocks / submenus.
    • added script for black Shell and coloured text

Download link:

  • Created set of 14 full HD wallpapers (AmigaEncounter, Abstract, Abstract v2, Abstract v3, Impact, Matrix [+Matrix col2], Futur, Retro, Retro v2, Space [+Space-green], The Ball, The Ball v2 and Xtra) resized into 6 different resolutions: 800x600; 1024x768; 1280x1024, 1440x900, 1680x1050 and 1920x1080px.

* * * F.A.Q: * * *

* WHY IT TOOK SOOOO LONG:
  • Bounty is finished in February 2012. Then it took over a month to receive motherboard. System couldn't boot so I had to order SATA cards from Australia. Thank you Belxjander for sending it to me.
  • In the mean time I invested [~440 Eur] into new tower case, UPS, hard disk, DVD Rom, graphics card, USB Flash, keyboard, mouse, USB hub.
  • After receiving SATA cards in April 2012 - system couldn't boot for over 3 months of really hard working and setting. AmigaOS4.1 update 2 boots for the first time in June 2012 [again thanks to Belxjander].
  • In June I got Maxim baby boy so it took me another 2 months for movements from one town to another and preparing place for family. During that time I had enormous of work for various clients [video production, ads, commercials, animations, music, sfx, games, UI and web design]...
  • In September 2012 I started to create themes, but it didn't work as I expected. As I am just a designer [without any programming knowledge] - creating the theme was an extremely large and time consuming problem [discovering how the system works, where are UI parts etc].
  • InBetween Skinning and life I used to create everything others I listed in the beginning.
  • And finally 1st theme is finished [with large help from Kas1e] this week, 1,5 years later after bounty is finished.

* VIDEO PRODUCTION ABOUT AMIGA SYSTEM?

As soon as I get fully working 3D driver I will record a video about AmigaOS and put it on my channel [I already have over 26 million visitors, over 9000 subscribers, between 50 and 100.000 viewers every day and over 2 millions comes by month].

My youtube tracking visits link:
http://socialblade.com/youtube/user/djnykk

I will not record AmigaOS in its current state [as my graphic drivers are not capable of playing video at full speed, displaying Youtube videos, working in Graphics and Desktop Publishing software, composing music... etc.] as it will receive lots of negative votes.

I hope I explained all in very short text. More work will come in future.

@ all

Thank you for your comments. I am still on vacation but will reply:

Hyperion and A-Eon should take notice - just look at the little song djnick has made, which has been seen nearly 2.5 million times now - now when was the last time a new amiga computer was seen 2.5 million times by the outside world ?? - this is marketing when it's best, and is priceless.

Thanks :) I knew it will be good idea to put X1000 in background :) Now lets hope OS4.2 will be much more preconfigured and preinstalled system than all AmigaOS systems up to now.

and the winamp skins are also just collected? i had an impression as if it was presented as own work when released lately. the os theme itself looks rather nice (if window corners were not *that* round, we were talking about it quite a while ago) but still rather similar to the default theme imho.

Sure. It took time for collection and testings. I would love to see as much as possible demo programs on Amiga and see what they can do, but somebody must collect them and install as demo. I love the way AmiKIT is installed - it is the best Amiga presentation ever for other people to try and test. Nobody will love AmigaOS4.1 if it will come without anything installed. Even I had ti spend thousands of hours just to figure out what system can do. Nobody has that free time these days, its 2013.

About AmigaOS.net - 1st version has been programmed [and designed] by djrikki, and then they asked me to do redesign of a website. This is how it looked at first:

I myself didnt even notice until 12 hours ago, that Djnick and Djrikki were actually two separate users. I have always seen them separately, so have never noticed theres difference after Dj. Now im not sure which ones done what.

Thats the reason I've changed [2 years ago] my nickname from "djnick" to just "Nykk". But left "djnick" because of Amiga world.

The themes look great, have you created a newbie guide to theme creation for Amiga system - from start to finish. It would be a shame for others to also struggle and waste time getting the required info. Your knowledge would really help others - maybe even a blog on how you do each theme for others to follow etc. Just some thoughts so we can reinvest archive Amiga knowledge. great work!

Well at current state, after so many months of work I finally know where is what and my opinion is - making themes for AmigaOS is complete mess. System really needs update. I could write step by stem but the point is - the main part of everything is not in Gui prefs... but in Preferences code in Sys:Prefs/Presets/ThemeName/bitmap/ - this file name is actually the main part of everything. And I accidentally found it [even it does not have .txt extension, I didn`t know - is it a text editing file with commands or .exe file that can't be edited.

So I expect new OS4.2 to have much improved code for easy Workbench skinning.

I have several themes [over 6] created [drawn in Photoshop] but to implement them into windows - will require heavy CSS-like coding and changing [adding / editing and removing] text commands in prefs file.

I am about to post help request in Hyperion site to create me code for much complicated skins than those I've created and also - installer.

then it was not clear enough of misunderstanding on my part. i agree its good to have some elegant default skins as default, best if they can be included with the os if license allows. just dont overload it, choose the best.
