Call for Amiga Developers
Kickstarting PowerPC and 68k software development

Sacramento 17th October 2015

As part of our ongoing commitment to deliver quality software content for both PowerPC and 68K Amiga systems A-EON Technology Ltd is pleased announce a new initiative for Amiga software developers.

In the past year we launched the AMIStore app store which has been enthusiastically supported by both Amiga developers and users.

AMIStore performance update:

44 software titles
Customer base ~700
Over 2200 paid transactions

……..and growing month on month

We have also purchased many Classic and Next-Generation AmigaOS titles as well as funding the development of several new applications and utilities. As part of this drive to improve the amount and quality of Amiga software we have created a dedicated SVN resource for all developers working on our applications. We have also implemented a Mantis bug tracker together with a developer mailing list and Wiki to aid software development. We now have 14 developers engaged in paid development work on 23 software projects. However, we are keen to expand and accelerate our software development effort to create new applications and utilities for the PowerPC and 68k platforms.

Call for Amiga Developers
We are looking for experienced Amiga developers to work on our existing applications and create new content for both the 68k and PowerPC platforms. If you are an existing or former Amiga developer and want to help create new software applications for the 68k or PowerPC platform please visit:

@Yasu

You have mentioning the same statement in several posts in this thread however it is not factual. The MorphOS devleoper was not turned down. He offered to do it for free but we suggested it would be better if he had some payment for the work.

one problem I remember was that there is no bullet library on Aros 68k. The older version of PPaint I have obviously does not need it. Copying the bullet library from 3.X did solve that but it still not worked. I could try it again as Wawa said and make a serial log.

That is the information I've read here and on other forums. Ehm, what does this mean exactly? That he is working on the port? That he rejected it because he wanted to do it for free? Is it being worked on or not?

Yes that sounds a little strange... he did not take it because he was offered money and it was against his honour so he rejected it?

That is indeed strange...

I would never reject money when offered

The call is for PPC and 68k developers... are AROS ports also interesting? Of course there is no Reaction GUI available on Aros (except that classact works when added to Aros 68k).

Actually, not that strange at all.

It's one thing to take some code, start looking at it, and maybe getting it to compile and run to some degree.
If you're doing it for free, no-one can hold anything against you, and you're not obliged to deliver anything. Getting paid, you need to deliver, and you all of a sudden have customers with demands. Which can take the fun out of it.

hmm ok

but I think it is also a question of the money you get

if it is not much but with lots of potential trouble then it is not worth it. And it depends on what you oblige yourself in the contract you have to sign

@Yasu

He has already accepted my offer and work will commence soon.

Maybe it is not a good idea to post information you have heard second or third hand without knowing that the information is correct in the first place. I hope you will now amend you posts to display the correct information

Yes, of course the amount of money is a factor.
I doubt it's enough to quit your day job. The customer's demand is of course in some relation to the kind of money involved. But even when paying a low price, as a customer you still want something back.
Hopefully the money is enough to be an incentive for taking a few unpaid/vacation days off work.

Now, don't get me wrong, I think this initiative is super great!

It's uncommon to see so many negative comments related to the best initiative of the last decade in Amiga land. Everybody should be aware of that attention to the platform can only be driven by new applications (and hardware). The user base is shrinking and if a certain number should be maintained or if growth should be achieved, than this is the right way to do it.

The discussion about different fractions of the community and the "I'm better than you" mentality are not helping.

I respect the men who have taken risk on themselves and money in their hands. They are on a good way and I wish them best of success.

They're very skilled programmers

@Amigakit and A-Eon

I hereby of offer you my sincere appology for my comments and posts. I know they where harsh in tone and now I know I was completely wrong. I hope you will accept it, and interpret my inquieries as concerns rather than slander.

However, I am still not really sad for giving you such a hard time. Because now I've finally got my answer The posts I have read on a.org an on AW about the offer was not corrected by you (and I read the posts here daily), so naturally I took your silence as proof that it was true. I think this whole thing could have been avoided if you simply told us that "we are looking for a skilled programmer" or something like that, and not being so cryptic

I'm looking forward to buy from you.

@AmigaBlitter

I believe it's up to qualified developers to apply, not for a-eon to invite.

@Yasu

Glad its more or less sorted out. This project is new, so takes time to sort out the rules.

@Amigakit
He does this all the time, so don't be surprised next time you have to ask him to rewrite his posts.

I'll try to clear things out a bit here.

I think this rumour of the turned down offer was started here:
http://www.amiga.org/forums/showpost.php?p=778671&postcount=149

So, I believe there wasn't any direct offer from any developer until very recently, but indirectly it seemed that no other offers would be accepted, because it looked that it's in Broadblues' contract, that it'll be his job to do the possible MorphOS port too.

It was also heard that Broadblues would get an access to MorphOS machines if the port would be decided to be made. Although the decision seemed to be very unlikely, because it was stated by Amigakit that they'd need around 180 confirmed buyers, but any sort of action to confirm the buyers was never arranged.

So, it seemed very unlikely to get the port done and during the year someone forgot the details and the rumour turned a bit harsher that someone would have been turned down personally (wasn't Yasu who first started to talk about it, I remember some talks in IRC and tried to correct them a bit, but new rumour sticked in people's minds).

But finally after this hint of possibility to have someone else to make the MorphOS port, I myself mentioned about it to one developer who then contacted Amigakit, and now it apparently is materializing after all.
http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?p=793618

I think that this wouldn't have happened without some public "kicking" and keeping the topic alive. So, it's actually Yasu's comments in a.org which finally kicked this thing moving, thanks for that :)

And the original rumour doesn't have anything to do with the payment of now acquired developer, I believe nobody has known about those recent discussions publically.

Well i've not read all the drivel on this thread, if you want developers especially
new ones; then how about a Propper how to package.

eg:

A Developers package that has 100% coverage of EVERY Library, EVERY Device,
EVERY Recource with coded examples with FULL annotations and explanations.
Full explanations of ALL parameters that a Library or Function uses.
An explanation of good programming practice for OS4

It will have to be a much higher standard than the RKM's , they were very poor,
just a great big list of badly documented stuff.

Wol.
