Introducing Tabor and the A1222
A powerful, low cost, entry level PowerPC motherboard

San Francisco 19th October 2015

A-EON Technology Ltd is pleased to announce that Tabor, a new powerful, low cost, entry level PowerPC motherboard, which forms part of our A1200 series, is about to undergo beta testing.

As part of our drive to create more powerful lower cost, entry level hardware and expand the Next-Generation user base we commissioned Ultra Varisys to create a new PowerPC motherboard. The result is Tabor, a 170 mm x 170 mm mother-board based on a Freescale QorIQ P1022 32-bit e500v2 dual-core PowerPC processor running at 1.2 GHz. Prototypes have already been shipped to key developers and members of A-EON Technology’s Core Linux support team and, as a result, several Linux distributions are already up and running on the Tabor board. Working in cooperation with ACube srl, a beta test programme is about to commence, which is already over-subscribed.

The full system is designated the AmigaOne A1222.

How do we know OS4.x does not exist for this hardware?

It was a statement from Costel Mincea (Hyperion) on a German forum. Also ssolie listed the short to mid-term goals during his AmiWest presentation like this: "Finish X5000 port", "port OS4 to Tabor", "finish OS 4.2".

Quote:

The fact that this news is posted on Amiga specific sites suggests that A-Eon are ready to go - not wait until 2018 as speculated.

This announcement is probably getting posted now for two reasons:

1. The X5000 missed its announced release date. A-EON are basically saying "oh look! something shiny over there!" to stop you guys from noticing.

2. The reason the X5000 is not released yet, is the lack of a mature OS4 port - Trevor keeps pointing that out recently during his presentations. Announcing the next hardware right now increases public pressure on Hyperion: "look we're ready to go! the next hardware generation is ready for release already! Hyperion is holding us back, you know?"

Quote:

A-Eon/Hyperion have been good to us recently so I am hoping they won't let us down.

What planet are you living on?

Heh. People frequenting this and other forums take release/completion dates with a massive grain of salt (most of us anyhow), so there is no need for AeonKit to run distraction.
There where already a couple of looong threads disussing the hardware and potential issues with it, so it makes sense to me that the details are released since the "cat was out of the bag" already.

Both Aeonkit and Ssolie/hyperion said clearly that software/OS progress was far slower than they had hoped, so its not like they hid that fact.
Ssolie sounded quite sincere about the issues with OS development, and making halfway fun of themselves about when multicore support development was announced (2010), and now in AmiWest2015 its still way off.

@Overflow: it's highly questionable that software development isn't an "exact science", according to some recent Solie's speaking...

I did notice that comment myself, and Ive been suprised noone had flagged it before now.
What he meant by it Im not entirely sure about tho. My thinking is that changing one aspect of the OS might break something else. I suspect it was a matter of poor choice of words.

I used to play EVE Online, and from time to time I read news/developer notes as they make patches/expansions. Often when they change old code it has unintentional consequences, aka they break other part of the game, usually noticed by the players that stresstest it thru normal gaming much more detailed than the devs themselves can.

Wether or not this was the issue on ssolie's mind I dont know ;)

@Overflow: IMO they (Hyperion's developers) lack a good unit test tool chain, so if they change something they don't know if it breaks something else.

Or they lack experience with some agile software development methodology, which let you schedule and coordinate the work to do with realistic release dates.

Or both.

how much sincerity is necessary for finally admitting the obvious?

The real question is why unhappy Amigans don't leave the platform and prefer instead bashing other people work. I suppose because it's easier to do and it's in their nature.
I'm pretty sure many who are complaining all the time don't even own or wann own an NG Amiga which run OS4.

The only thing I wanna know like someone already posted is price and release date.

The computer science is founded on the computability theory, which is a branch of mathematic, which is an exact science.

You can draw your conclusions...

I'm sure that these people would complain even if AmigaOS becomes as feature complete as linux/Macos/windows and runs on custom powerfull than i7 hardware at less that the price of a 3DS. These people always find something to complain. it seems that is complain all they find fun
