hardware Classic   hardware Classic : Prisma Megamix Music Card Available On AmigaKit.com
   posted by amigakit on 30-Oct-2016 21:45:20 (10946 reads)
AmigaKit.com is pleased to announce stock and availability of A-EON Technology's Prisma Megamix music card.

The Prisma is a new Zorro card expansion for big box Amiga's and also the Amiga 1200 Towers with an available compatible clockport socket (desktop A1200 version coming soon).

Based on VS1063 chip, it can playback many music formats in full 16-bit 48Khz audio and additionally mix with the Amiga's native Paula sound. When it is decoding and playing back a MPEGA audio file or various other formats, it frees up the Amiga to do other things. An MHI driver is supplied with the card for AmigaAmp and other various music playing software.

Specifications
* Clockport and Zorro II interfaces (if operated in Zorro II slot, clockport can be used for compatible add-on cards)
* Compatible with Amiga A1200 T, A2000, A3000, A4000, A4000T.
* Based on VS1063 chip
* Playback of wide range of formats: MP2, MP3, WMA, OGG, LC-AAC, HE-AAC, FLAC, ALAC, IMA ADPCM, G.711 u-law, G.711 a-law, G.722, and WAV PCM formats
* Pass through port for Paula mixing. Paula mixing is automatically activated by hardware, no software interaction needed
* CDDA header
* MHI support for use with MHI compatible software such as AmigaAmp
* can be expanded by optional digital module (S/PDIF)

Is there AHI support yet? There was talk of it maybe happening.
Even as someone who has a preference of 68k/classic Amiga, without it this is little more than a solution looking for a problem.

I just don't get the point to this without AHI. Is there any benefit to it vs, for arguments sake, an RPI zero ($5) being used as a mixer and having both audio sources output through same audio equipment? With that setup you could have Paula output, plus 16bit output of all prisms supported formats. With VNC or similar you could also control the whole thing through the Amiga.

How does this card perform compared to a SB128 in a Mediator LT4 on a A1200?

Better sound quality? More supported formats (looks like it)? Lower CPU usage?

If there isn't an AHI driver for this, then they don't pretty much compare at all. This seems to be a decoder card which plays certain formats with HW (no CPU usage), but can't be used as a generic audio card. And SB128 doesn't decode anything with HW (higher or very high CPU usage) and can only be used as a generic audio card. So, for totally different uses, and that's why sound quality comparison is unimportant :)

If you'd be interested of an all-around card, which can do both (HW decoding and generic playback), I guess your options are still in the older Zorro cards like Delfina or Melody, which have DSP on board. Although their format support is more limited... if you're only interested about a decoder card, then this new one seems to be fine choice with suppport for more modern formats like flac etc.

Ok. Thank you for the answer. And of course you are right No AHI driver = comparison does not make sense.

I have a Mediator for my A1200 and there is no Zorro ports in that, so it is either AHI supported card or Paula.

@AmigaKit: Is there plans for a AHI driver for the Prisma? SP128 on AHI is rather CPU hungry...

@JohnFante

As it says, it supports lots of formats: "MP2, MP3, WMA, OGG, LC-AAC, HE-AAC, FLAC, ALAC, IMA ADPCM, G.711 u-law, G.711 a-law, G.722, and WAV PCM formats"

SB128 can only play WAV PCM.

The difference is that this card can play audio *files*. So you can play compressed music without any noticable CPU load.

It comes with an MHI driver, which is some sort of audio processor driver supported by AmigaAmp for example.

Since the card also plays WAV PCM files, it is probably possible to make an AHI driver as well that simulates wav-files to the card when using AHI for random sound.

VS1063

can I use the clockport to install a Subway USB in my A4000 as I've sadly had zero luck installing it on my X-Surf100

Good work! A lot of blood, sweat and tears went into this no doubt! A great achievement and going on my Christmas list. I've already decided I don't listen to enough music so this could be handy to turn that around

Think of it as complementing the SB128, not a replacement. The SB128 in itself isn't very CPU heavy, what's actually heavy is the CPU-bound software that prepares the audio to output through the SB128. If you can get a long enough clockport cable and have a way of mounting it, there's no reason you can't use both cards. The Prisma will work on the clockport and will decode compressed audio with much reduced CPU load, and the SB128 will still work for AHI software. Either card can mix the two outputs together so you only need one connection to the amp/speakers.

I imagine if there was/is it would have been announced.
Is there anyone yet working to do AHI driver/wrapper/whatever for it?

?

1) Does it work with amiga os 3.9 and amiga os 4.1?
2) Does it fit and work with an Amiga 1200 Tower with Mediator?

Thanks

So you can play compressed music without any noticable CPU load.

However streaming this music via clockport takes some CPU cycles, especially as the stream has to be sent byte at a time so it takes 4 times more CPU instructions than storing it in RAM. Unklie Paula, this card is not DMA driven (at least when connected to clockport).

True, though it's probably a lot better than the MAS player, which had to transfer the compressed data serially, so that's one CIA write per bit. That's quite noticeable CPU-wise, though it still allows smooth multitasking when playing 192Kbps MP3s on a Blizzard 1230. Writing to the clock port has to be at least 8 times more efficient than that, and that's not taking into account the CIA response times. Now, I haven't tried a Prisma yet, but that seems to make sense to me.

Can it play and send 5.1 sound? (through multiple channels, btw)

Actually it wouldn't be that bad. Software can read/write CIA serial data per byte. So can still do 8-bits/byte at a time. The CIA then takes the data in the buffer and sends/receives it serially.
