Whatever happened to Payback on intent anyway, it showed some real nice promise.

It wasn't for the PDAs, it is for GameBoyAdvance. And it is still coming along nicely. If you hunt back through our news (use the search button), you will find the last reports on it - or click here.

Hi,

The power in AmigaDE is the in-house tools that are being created. It's not just Intent. And the whole idea behind it is very good. Also it takes time to build a userbase. And let's face it, there are not millions of dollars to pump into marketing. A thing you got to admire is that they are not abandon ship when sometimes the sun is not shining that bright. They are defending their idea till the death. And that is something you cannot say about a lot of other people. I hate it when you devote your time and money to something for a long time and then you find out they dropped the whole thing.

That is the "added value" Amiga Inc. are adding. We are yet to see, one way or the other, how much of a value it truly is. It is very much unproven technology with unproven market success. That is why it is so hard to get excited about - who knows if it really turns out to be anything good?

Mike tells me (above) that there is plenty of excellence there. Unfortunately I think, at least the public, is yet to see that excellence. As for what ever they may be cooking in-house, given their track-record, we can only wait for a public release to asses the merits of those things. What we have seen so far adds only some convenience tools to intent, nothing revolutionary.

It is very hard, from a technology point of view, and from a marketing point of view, to convince someone to code for intent instead of Java. And even more so to convince someone to code for AmigaDE instead of Java. That is the problem, in my opinion. The only "excellence" there lays within a promise of an "Amiverse" that has so far failed to materialize in public. Whether or not it will do so in the future, who knows. And if it does, only then can we really assess whether or not it is any good.

Also, the licensing policy Amiga Inc. are employing feels unnecessarily restrictive. People can't really get started on AmigaDE easily, because Amiga Inc. controls the only real channel of deploying software.

Well, yes and no. If the road had been paved with more than just good intentions I'd whole-heartedly agree. But unfortunately there are a lot of reasons people are, and in my opinion foundedly so, disappointed in the way Amiga Inc. has "hung in there". Some brutal honesty and two coupon campaigns less over the years would have bought them a lot more sympathy and good-will among the pundits.

Thats the thing you seem to be missing. DE will run java apps, and alot of stuff in other languages as well.This freedom, couple with the ability for these apps to be run on various platforms without porting and/or recompiling are Amiga DE's strength.

You can carry on as much as you like on how good or crappy the games currently written for Amiga DE are, that is really beside the point as they are not written by Amiga Inc, and do not really reflect on what is Amiga Incs product: Amiga DE player.

As far as market test of popularity goes, thier deal with M$ resulted in all pack being sold out, that seems to indicate popularity.

@Miffy
Though I have disagreed with you vehemntly in the past, and have found many of your views cynical at best, your reviews have been extremely well done, thought out and presented.

Surprisingly I have found myself agreeing with most of the recent comments you have made both here and at A.org, and in many ways have found your comments and reviews one of the last shining beacons of light for Amiga.

Keep up the good work.

@IonMane

Thank you. I do not recall our disagreement ( although I remember having one with you ) and people on ANN and Moobunny would be amazed to hear me described as cynical about anything other than Pegasos/MorphOS.

I am not sure I deserve your glowing praise but I will certainly continue to do my amateur reviews.

Not really. I know it runs PersonalJava, I just don't agree with the argument that it makes much of a difference. Sure, it is nice to have Java on platforms that might not otherwise have it (most do), and from what I know the VM is fast, which is nice too, but that still doesn't answer the fundamental question:

Why would someone write software for AmigaDE natively instead of Java?

From a technology point of view, so far I see very little reason. From a marketing point of view, I see even less.
