Internet News   Internet News : AmigaOne Lite and AW.net covered at Slashdot
   posted by CodeSmith on 23-Sep-2003 4:36:41 (8396 reads)
Just went over to slashdot, and they've picked up AmigaOne Lite news on this very site.

The Slashdot link is here.

Amid the usual comments I noticed a rather vocal Anonymous Coward, who was making a big deal of the Amiga, Inc court case and helpfully suggesting an alternative Amiga platform

Downix looks a little like my mate Axeman.. now all we have to do is do is have a clandestine meeting in a car park - and swap them around.

Once in, Axe can brainwash them with Amiga propoganda.. I mean these dudes are easly brainwashed right?

(Yes that was a Troll - my first for over a year look what you drove me to...)

@Magic2003

"Without an OS"??? You'll have MORE functions and apps available with a Linux OS than you'll have with OS4, at least to start with.

And the point of buying an A1 now even if you're not interested in Linux is pretty simple: it'll be cheaper (Earlybird finishes when OS4 is launched) and you won't have to queue.

Believe me, with the number of people saying they'll wait for OS4, that queue is going to be very, very long. And all the dealers will be in the same position. Remember how long it took to get the Nov 2002 backlog sorted? I reckon with OS4 it'll be much, much worse.

Hmmm. It might be on sale, but you don't know what you'll be buying nor when it'll be delivered?

Not sure that's entirely legal, particularly the total lack of delivery date.

Right... that's one of the things that made the timing of that "news" item so funny.

@Kay

"Am I the only one who feels like punching this guy?"

No absolutely not!!

I find it totally lame to comment on a competitors product the way Downix does (and not mentioning he's a Genesi employee), but I guess thats all he's hired for.

The REAL Amiga soloution gets quite a lot of attention now, even before it's release, lets keep it that way shall we

It's also mentioned on www.newz.dk a Danish computer news site (thanks to me:)

@ anarchic_teapot

"And the point of buying an A1 now even if you're not interested in Linux is pretty simple: it'll be cheaper (Earlybird finishes when OS4 is launched) and you won't have to queue."

The part about the queue might be true allthough I hope it won't be too bad (if Eyetech gets out of retail business it might speed things up).

The part where you say it will be cheaper when you order now doesn't sound to good to me.

We have better Macs going a lot cheaper (not comparable because of size of production, I know!) and the Pegasos2 coming out at a pretty attractive price.

I am very well aware that these machines doesn't run OS4 but even Amiga users will not pay just anything to get OS4.
If we are to expand the userbase a little aswell the price has to go down atleast to Peg2 level (even more for the Itx board).

@ troels

How much does a PegII cost? What spex does it come with? How much does an A-Lite cost?

I wanna know so I can make an informed decision on released products.

Genesi is preparing a press release (before release), with full specs and everything you want to know. What's taking so long? My guess is that they are waiting for all parties involved to release it, and this probably includes IBM for being IBM certified.

And the price is indeed quite stunning. I think nobody will disagree on that. And the board is just 2 weeks later than the announced september date.

Anyway, the point that is was trying to make: i hope you did not know about the press release, because otherwise you are just as bad as some (a few certainly) ppl on the other side.

Such mindsets may indicate some insecurity in their products.

I recall Draco** was an Amiga even without the custom chipsets (due to the licensed AmigaOS 3.x). A scenario similar to AmigaOne/AmigaOS4.0 setup**.

**CPU types are not factored in due to their ?off the shelf nature? (for both 68K and PPC).

And apparently, the Pegasos 2 will cost a fraction of what the A1 Lite will.

That just cracks me up. Anyone else remember the total derision that The Blue Side had for the Teron boards' IBM certification? Now all of a sudden it's important enough to delay the publishing of the specs of their new flagship product.

What a bunch of hypocrites.

Yeah, I remember it. It was my comments and replies that prompted Thargan's infamous "MAI are so proud" "Editorial" that tried so hard to discredit the IBM certification process. And of course, all of the usual bunch joined in on the bashing.

Wonder if he will post a similiar "Genesi are so proud" "Editorial" once they become certified, and how it will credit the certification process???

I was actually hinking of doing this, by posting a new thread and merely add a link to the "MAI are so proud" "article" . There, simply substitute Mai for Marvell (comics)!

Well, it probably would be fun for a minute of "revenge" but it's water under the bridge now... (you know, down there where the trolls live, lol). Anyway, it's not worth stirring the pot again. Take the higher road and just congratulate them.

I suggest you wait until the IBM news is released before making insults; there seems to be something coming other than the MAI certification thing.

Not sure that's entirely legal, particularly the total lack of delivery date.

What would be illegal? They've only announced a sales date; they're under no obligation to say anything further. They've made no commitments that would subject them to action by a (would-be) customer. Obviously before taking orders they will disclose the product details. Geez.

Choice 2: .... the geek Slashdot audience aint going to care about the "Its really a Teron board" or juvenile bleating "its not an Amiga" or "Amiga Inc only has 100$ in the bank" stuff. C'mon, these are the people that tolerate Red Hat, Mandrake and many other financially challenged institutions....

Beyond the petty infighting here, people will just look at things like product specs, company viability, and so on. With an open source product, the viability of a vendor doesn't matter so much because the actual product development isn't the company's responsibility, and there are multiple sources. But in the case of a proprietary product, naturally the health of the company that owns the IP becomes a factor. How did we feel when Commodore stock was trading at a couple of dollars a share? Or when Be, Inc. was about to tank? This is why Amiga, Inc.'s financial health may be a more significant factor that Red Hat's, in their respective markets. And whether or not the OS is protected by the Hyperion contract apparently remains to be seen.

Don't get me wrong, though. I don't wish for Amiga's demise. Personally I think there is room for both Genesi and Amiga; both need more buyers than the existing "Amiga market" can provide. And it could be that instead of cannibalizing each other's sales, the successes of each could convince the broader market that there is value in new alt solutions, which would open things up for more sales.

I don't like the purely negative attacks like on slashdot either, but then just look at the petty hostility in this thread and see that the negativity is mighty deep on both sides.

@Gary_C

The financial health of Amiga Inc is not directly related to the AmigaONE or AOS4 projects ( as Ben Hermans has claimed, and until we see evidence to the contrary I am inclined to take his word for it ) yet we see these little helpers popping up all over the net to "remind" people of the poor state of health of Amiga Inc as of August 7th, 2003 - to help them with their buying choices no doubt.

When someone argues that these are not exactly dependent on each other yet more little helpers crop up with pocket legal guides to try and disprove this.

Given we have these little helpers wandering around the net performing this service are you surprised at the resentment?
