ah, ok. i misunderstood, then.

i'm not certain why neither OS4 nor MOS currently in incapable of running with only a single core as i don't know enough about the internals of the OS or its storage model. i think piru has commented about this on other sites; his conclusion was that it would fundamentally break things, but i can't recall the details.

Well *S*MP is a problem while AMP isn't really an issue. Mind you that some MorphOS key developers developed the powerup software which was an (A)MP support package for AmigaOS. But a true SMP (which is announced for OS4) is not possible w/o breaking up things.

It’s not based on the same MorphOS developers wrote a sandbox called ABOX for Quark kernel aka MorphOS.

AmigaOS4 does not have a sandbox, ExecSG is the kernel, and there are many more things that are different in the design.

MorphOS is not really sandboxed. It is rather prepared to get full ysandboxed. Indeed Quark sits underneath, but drivers and stuff like that still have *direct* access to the hardware - a criterion not true for sandboxed systems.

Using same sandboxing as MorphOS team just on their own solution?

Surely, late Hyperion wouldn`t stand embaressment to announce something they just can`t do + issue dual core hardware for their OS

Surely, it won`t come in Update 4 or 5, maybe in OS 4.2

Err... Would be a good idea not to confuse swap and memory protection, thank you.

Memory protection is not possible (except in wet dreams, false promises, or by breaking compatibility).
On the other hand, swap is a piece of cake. It existed in OS3.x about 15 years ago with VMEM, and MorphOS also had it around 2001-2002. Too bad there's little point in having that when you can just buy physical memory instead (don't forget you still can't address more than 1.x GB anyway, swap or not).

As for virtual addressing, both OS use virtual addressing, of course, but there's nothing fancy about that, really...

No, it's been talked about before elsewhere.
If I can find some links I'll post them here.

@TiredofLife

Haven't found anything official yet.
Seems update 5 will be for the X1000.

@thinkchip

Back to your original question:
Quote:
Isn't there supposed to be an OS update before Christmas?

In the past there have been some updates around Christmas time. I do not know if anyone ever made any promises regarding OS 4.1 update 4.

IMHO, I think it would be better to delay the update if they are still working out some bugs, or maybe split the update into smaller updates if they can fix some existing problems without introducing new problems.

Since I have a MicroA1 with 750GX CPU, I do not expect any miracles. But I would like to see fixes for the issues that have been identified.

@redfox

Another question that might be of interest too is if we will see anymore updates for OS 4.1 after update 4 or update 5 or will it only be OS 4.2 for future updates.

As far as it could be understand by now,

Update 4 is bugfix of update 3 + something new
Update 5 is x1000 support + bugfixes of update 4 if known

All the future new features and updates will be just for OS 4.2

It would be really nice if we had an official response as opposed to users guessing... what happened to Ssolie? I havent seen him post at all lately.

Well thats cool but now that hes leading os4 efforts you would think he would post to this thread and other important ones.. there have been many valid questions asked about updates for the OS and x1000 project, as well as bugfixes for the other platforms that have gone unanswered.

The Hyperion Blog is the proper place for any Official comment.
We may be able to get a post there by questions or comments here though.

@redfox

I also have a micro and I agree that it's getting left behind. The list of things it won't ever be able to do keeps growing longer. It's hard not to feel a little bitter about it. I paid a lot and it's basicly an orphan. For those unfamiliar with the problem, I'm referring to the inability to upgrade the abysmal built-in 32-MB graphics.

It would be helpful if somebody would make a list of subjects you should never bring up, a "Forbidden thread thread". That way people wouldn't get in trouble for asking a perfectly reasonable question.

I stumbled on this while preparing some news for my upcoming user's group meeting.

Amazing to see this somehow turn into a non-AmigaOS thread with "experts" taking the usual pokes so quickly. And they wonder why we can't all get along...

Anyway, Update 4 hit a few snags but will be out Real Soon Now. Update 5 is meant for the X1000 release. I don't think I was silly enough to commit to any dates but we are trying to ship ASAP.

I'll be blogging when the time is right so keep an eye on http://blog.hyperion-entertainment.biz You can sign up for the RSS feed and avoid the moderator stress next time.
