Okay,

I'm sure its another case of "what am I doing wrong", but I just purchased
Hyperions Quake2 from Mr. Hardware Computers and when I try to install it, it
goes through the initial process...but as soon as I insert the PC CD for Quake2,
the AmigaOne feezes. No mouse, no nothing but CTRL-Amiga-Amiga. A couple of
times I got a requester that said "Ixnet.library has version 48.0 while
ixemul.library has version 47.3. Both libraries should have the same version,
therefore ixnet.library won't be used". There is only an Abort button on that
requester. If I hit Abort, the AmigaOne locks up. If I don't, nothing else
happens. Now...the interesting thing is that it seems as if both ixnet.library
and ixemul.library are installed from the Hyperion Quake2 CD itself.
So...what do I do to get this game I've purchased to install on my AmigaOne?
I have downloaded Ixemul version 48.0 from Aminet and tried installing the
68020 versions of Ixnet and ixemul libraries in Libs:....to no avail.

Any ideas please?

Thanks!

@scabit

You're not doing anything wrong. Actually ixemul.library is not compatible with os at all.

The work around it this:

1) open the installer script form the hyperion CD and find the following lines and comment them by adding ; at the start of the lines:

(P_BuildCommandLine (tackon #pak-path "pak0.pak") (tackon @default-dest "baseq2"))
(P_BuildCommandLine (tackon #pak-path "pak1.pak") (tackon @default-dest "baseq2"))
(P_BuildCommandLine (tackon #pak-path "pak2.pak") (tackon @default-dest "baseq2"))

Then save the installer in Ram:

2) Run the installer, everything will be installed correctly.

3) Then open the Unarc program (from AmiDock) and browse your Quake II windows CD find the directory called /baseq2. The three files "pak0.pak", "pak1.pak" and "pak2.pak" are there. Unarc these into the directory that you chose to install Quake II on your hard drive in subdirectory qbase2/, in this order, first 0 then 1 then 2. Overwrite any previous files.

4) Then go to hyperion site and register your copy of Quake II, and download the OS4.0 native update. Follow the intallation instructions in that archive accurately.

5) Your Quake II installation should work!

Good luck,
Firbodi

@scabit

Or just copy by hand from win quake2 cd pak files to quake2/baseq2/ dir unpack files from amiga install cd quake2 dir and register it in hyperion website and then install quake2 os4 to quake2 dir. You only need pak files from win quake2 cd. I am not sure is it necessary to unpack pak files. When I tryed to install quake2 it hanged in the registering thingy like it is said in readme of os4 version in hyperion website. Just register quake2 in hyperions website and you can access readme of os4 version, follows those instructions and you are fine.

@scabit

Simply download QuakeOS4 executable, put is in Quake2 dir and copy baseq2 in the same directory. It works with both compressed pak and decompressed ones. The secondi is much faster.
Remember that Q2 require to run smooth 500 buffers and blocksize 2048 as stated on the OS4 installation guide.
To run it i use 1000000 of stack.

@firbodi

I've done that but the installer then fails on

"Couldn't create directory quake:baseq2/players in line 3723"

Does the installer create the GUI icon?

Shame there isn't a OS4 installer

@dazA1

it will come, it was / is just a beta atm.

anyway to people who have problems...do this:

Create a dir called quake2.
insert the cd (quake2) copy the baseq2 dir into your newly created quake2 dir.
copy over the os4 version (into your quake2 dir) .

set stack high and run it.

messing with the installer from the old one is something i did and i used alot of time and experimenting but anyway i recomend the way i just described.

have fun

Thanks guys. I got it working by copying the files manually...and leavng them
as PAK files ... it takes a couple of seconds to change levels...nothing too
severe.

Now my next question. The PC version came with 2 CDs...one of which seems to
have many assorted mods. How can I get these installed so I can play them with
the OS4 QuakeII?

Thanks again for your help!

Hmm, it takes about 40 seconds on my A1-XE 933MHz 512MB - and I have unpacked the .pak files!

When I play Quake II on Debian, loading a saved game is very fast, but on OS4 it is a pain. Is this because I use Fast (sic) File System on my drives and not SFS?

@RedMelons

I have FFS and it is fast.
Check to have blocksize 2048 and 500 buffers. A big stack (i don't remeber... 1MB?), and dma on.

This is the problem Rudei gets, along with it crashing after changing levels when playing over a network (connected to the aw.net Quake2 server). Have you tried a networked game?

Chris

Having 1000 buffers instead of 500 wouldn't slow Quake II loading down - would it?

Yes, network games play fine. The only problem I have is that whenever I try to run around someone kills me with a rocket every couple of seconds. Probably a bug in Quake II!

Everyones seems to have got it working what am i doing wrong?

I gave up on the installer so i followed the instructions on this thread:
-Download and register OS4 quake2 from hyperion.
-Made quake2 dir and unarchive the OS4 quake2 files into it.
-copy the files in baseq2 dir from the PC quake2 CD to my baseq2 dir
-open a shell, stack 1000000 and then quake2

And i get this "Error:could not fall back to software refresh!"

Arrrgh i know its going to be something really simple but does anyone have any ideas?

Do i need the quake2 gui?

Ok i've sorted it now.

running snoopdos showed me that quake was looking for the .pak files in workbench:

a quick cd command in shell and it now works!

cant wait for the next quake2 update.

Ok now i've got it running can anyone give me some tips on tweaking Quake2 to get the best Gfx & speed.

Or is it best to wait for the nova/warp3D drivers to come out?
