| Hi!
I've talked about this before on the forums but I thought that I should bring it up again.
Update 3 is out and the eth3com driver was promised to be faster. This might be true in some cases but I can't see that here. Like I've written before I got a 50Mbit connection wich gets somewhat limited by the router. When the router is used I get about 10Mbit.
So on other computers I get 3-4MB/s with 50Mbit and 1-1.5MB/s with the router. This is also true with Linux on the A1.
In AOS 4 on the other hand I get, most of the times, something like 150kb/s. If I download from os4depot.net for example or aminet (main site). It doesn't get much higher when I download from sunet wich has a faster line than I do for sure and is often used by people here in Sweden to test their connections.
What I wonder is if there are people here with 10Mbit (or higher) connections that actually gets the correct transferrate?
When I transfer to/from the old PC wich uses WLAN I get about 1.5MB/s wich seems normal considering that it only got ATA 33 and WLAN isn't very fast. I haven't tried wired to another computer but I'm sure that it would give me some nice numbers.
I also wonder if it could be some settings that are wrong regarding TCP/IP? I haven't changed them except for when I installed Samba but I've unactivated the services in prefs/internet so they aren't used (they slowed down AOS a lot for some reason).
Any ideas? Last edited by hotrod on 19-Jun-2005 at 08:24 PM.

| I can second this - update3 increased the speed a bit up to around 200kB/s, but I can't sustain speeds much higher than that. In the local network I get about 2MB/s.
When using linux both the internet and local network speed are pretty much what they should be. I've tried using Miami to compare the speeds but so far I haven't had much luck in getting Miami itself working properly. |

| Sounds really bad :/ Even my A1200 with 030 can get greater speed than that. Hope they fix it.

correct. i also found the ethernet transfer rate very slow i must say. with our dsl 2000 line i reach about 250k-260k cps when doing the providers speedtest. with the aone i only get about 170k cps.
also when doing a file transfer from/to out wintel machine. i transfered a 7mb file using smbfs which should just fly imho. but copying it from aone to pc it took several minutes. funny is that copying it back it only took 1/2 minute or so. didm't measure it.
i hope to see this improved. at least it seems to be stable now!

| Now i reach in internet 160kb/s thanks to the update 3, it is my connection limit.
Soon i'll be boosted to 4mbit. _________________ ikir |

Thanks, then I know it's "normal". I too hope that they'll fix this before the final.
@Ikir
You'll be dissapointed when you see that it won't reach the limit. |

I already have a 4Mbit connection and very soon I'm going to buy a microAmigone... I hope they fix this, it's a shame to see all this bandwidth wasted Last edited by Dagon on 19-Jun-2005 at 11:08 PM.

I would have to agree. TCP/IP transfers do seem rather slow - although I think there is a slight speedup in Update 3.
I did a quick comparison test with my A2500/060 running OS3.9/MiamiDx and my µA1 with OS4 update 3 by downloading a 6MB file from OS4depot with Ibrowse 2.3. Both machines are plugged into a router on the same network.
µA1 - averaged ~47,000cps A2500 - averaged ~105,000 cps
However, to test file transfers on my home network, I copied a 10MB mp3 from a PC to the µA1 using DOpus 4. It took a little more than 1 second. About 2 seconds to copy it back. I didn't even try this with the A2500 because I know it would take much longer (~20 seconds?). With Update 3, samba/smbfs operations seem much faster on the µA1 (directory listings, file transfers etc).

That's pretty much what I thought. Transfers on the local network are fast but on the internet it's slow. It needs to be fast overall |

I have same problem here, i just upgraded my 1MB upto 6MB and i didn't get anykind kind of speedup, i still get about 75k cps???
i was really hoping that update 3 was going to speed up my trasnsfer rate but it didn't...
and it's not from router....
Hope that they'll fix this soon...

Hmmm, I just did a few tests and I get inconsistent results. I have samba up and running and I connect to the remote PCs with SMBFS. Copying a 36MB .wav from PC to RAM: from the Amiga side = 19secs. Copying same file from RAM: to PC using "MY network places" = 3 mins. Copying same file back to PC from Amiga end I got fed up of waiting 30secs and still only 2% complete.
EDIT: I also did a download test from the Internet using a 6MB file from OS3 depot. 2min 14s from the A1 1m 30secs from the PC. Last edited by gadgetgaz on 20-Jun-2005 at 08:12 AM.

I get the feeling reading your posts that the slow downloading is caused by IB2.3 rather than the TCP/IP stack itself (as you get good performance doing other TCP/IP transfers). Have you tried an OS4 native ftp client for example? |

| I have that problem too with my µAOne... I thought i forgot something somewhere to have such slow transfer rate... but no.
With Update 2, the average transfer speed was ~90 000C PS, and now it is mostly ~160 000 CPS. That's much better, but not even close to the 640 000 CPS that i can get with my ADSL connection (via ethernet ADSL modem) on my wintel box.
I used IB2.3 and FTPMount handler (that is given to be OS4 nativ), and the result are the same. |

I have also notices that the trasfer rate is lower with update 3. With update 2 I get between 1 and 1.5 Mb/s when I download files in my internal net (My A1 is conneced to a router and the other computer is connected through a 54 Mbps WLAN which goes through a wall so I guess it is not bad). After I installed update 3 I rarely get above 1 Mb /s (usually between 500k/s and 1 Mb/s). I am using ATC to measure this figure.
On the other hand, rdesktop seems to be much more stable than before (before update 3 I could only use it a few seconds before it shut itself down).

I have seen comments on a lot of broadband forums that suggest this sort of thing can be related to having the wrong MTU setting in your TCP/IP stack. (Regardless of computer type.)
The MTU should generally be below 1500, the default of 1458 is often quoted as being the best, although 1430 is occasionally bandied around as a figure to try if you have problems.

do you have in Roadshow, the "TCP Advanced settings" (as Genesis have) for the TCP Kernel?
Try to rise the "TCP buffer size" value (both Transmit and Receive) or so.
Save and reboot . . . no idea if could help but

I just downloaded fron ftp.sunet.se using the ftp-command and I got: 263594 bytes/s. PPC-native, right?
Also AWeb gives about the same speed as IBrowse. |

i'll draw my last post off... I quess that promplem is in my ISP, i did try a local network and i did get 650kbs with my 6mb line.. And when i try foreing sites the speed drops to 75kbs... So i don't think that is in OS4
