Deluxe Paint IV works under OS4 update 3

I have been testing out many old Amiga1200 programs lately and was rather
impressed to find that DeluxePaint IV from Electronic Arts seems to work fine
under update 3.
There is one trick I noticed, however. In addition to being sure to set the
default stack size to something large ( say 200000), you must also select the
same screen mode as your current workbench screen, except using the 8 bit version.
I have tried others to no avail...but if, for example, my workbench is set to
1152 x 864 32bit and I select from the DeluxePaint screen mode requester on
startup 1152x864 8 bit, DeluxePaint runs fine. I have tested such things as
loading and saving pictures, brushes, color cycling, and drawing tools. I have
yet to fully test anims.

Note - the version of DeluxePaint I am using here is 4.6.

I'm gonna have to try this when I get home.
I was never much of an artist, but I enjoyed mucking about with deluxe paint.

@scabit

With version 4.5 it seems it doesn't draw the majority of the effects. Circles for example. I can't seem to get the 4.5-to-4.6 patch to work, (despite the amazingly helpful installation procedure). It complains that the original file is the wrong version.

Anyway, do circles work on 4.6? Some other things that don't seem to work in 4.5 are: flood fill, ovals, curved lines, anti-aliased lines and brushes. Also the cursor only shows the vertical guide line, not the horizontal.

Animation also doesn't seem to play correctly. But pressing/holding '2' for 'next' seems to give the right result.

The palette window opens in a new screen, instead of over the main screen (better behaviour than expected), but the pen colours seem to be corrupted until you click them.

But on the whole, quite fun to see it running again. I switched to PPaint many years ago, for some reason, and this is the first time I've seen it since.

If Deluxe Paint 4 works on OS4, that's great, but how about Dpaint 5?

I use Dpaint 5 to do Amiga animations, which you can see on www.3btv.com

@RoqueFort

I can get 4.5 to run, but cannot use any brushes.... => Only the 1x1 pixel can be used. Not very helpful.

DP 5 dies on tring to start up...

@Hondo_DK

I have not yet been able to get Brilliance or DPaint 5 working on Os4. I'll
keep trying though and let you know....

@Fransexy

Hi,

Brilliance is -not- restricted to HAM mode. All graphic modes of the day
are selectable. Still a classic favorite.

Off-topic note:Aborted post still sent. How curious.

Best Wishes,

@Fransexy

Hi,

Maybe you were thinking about "Digi Paint" from Newtek.
Brilliance allows full selection of all the available graphic modes of its time.
It was not limited to HAM mode.

Best Wishes,

@number6

correct...

However...

Brilliance got its blistering speed by ....

Banging the hardware

And NO ... It DOESN'T work on OS4... That was the VERY FIRST 68k program I tried.

I dont have UAE running on my machine though so ..

Any Breakers ... Any Takers ? ?

@The_Editor

My post wasn't clear, sorry. I was too busy digging out my old box for Digi Paint 3
to refresh my memory. I forgot to comment on compatibility entirely.
Unfortunately you are correct. Brilliance bangs the hardware.
It does -not- like OS4. Heh! On the bright side, it is still one of the few
programs that loads the old palette structure (on a classic of course).
Ummm...Ken maybe has tried Brilliance with UAE?

Best Wishes,

To mistake is human.I believed that "brilliance" was a paint program that only work in HAM mode. As number6 said, i have confused it with "digi paint".
Never has been you mistaken?

@scabit

Others have posted their problems so I won't elaborate too much...
It seems to work as you say in 8 bit mode but there are just too many features that refuse to work that in effect it doesn't really work...
Shame, this is one application I would like to see working in OS4

@scabit
How do you get the Program off the floppy disks & into your AmigaOne PC?
There's no floppy driver for OS4 pre-release.
