My Great Impressions Of Pre4 OS4.0!!! Posted on 21-Feb-2006 10:26:25

|
| Now that i have got a fully Pre4 OS4.0 setup again quickly, i feel this is the right time to tell you my impressions of my 933Mhz fully-DMA/fixed-enable A1G4XE with Update 4 of AmigaOS 4.0
The installation was painless, quick and easy. I simply quick-formatted the OS4 partition and made a full install of Update 4 from a burnt OS4 Update 4 Install CD (i have 2 of them in case something happens). I followed the instruction carefully and even edited the Radeon information in Devs:Monitor/Radeon.
On HSYNCMIN, i have set it to = 30000 On HSYNCMAX, i have set it to = 98000
Doing it that way, allowed me to use 1280 x 1024 screen mode
I have commented out the SOFTSPRITE=YES thing. No need for the Interrupt command. It fully works without. Have to mention i have a Radeon 9200, so the SoftSprite command commented out with YES was necessary, if not mistaken...
Unfortunately, i lost my previous Update 3 backup by deleting it by a mistake, but since Update 4 has most of the things as "standard", there wasn't much i needed to put into the OS4 partition that now consists of Update 4.
Now i have the BeOS/Zeta-styled Zami Theme from the Annonitation-pack, and just about all the Kens' Icons, fully replacing the GlowIcons in Envarc:SYS section and using Kens' Icons as standard on my desktop. I found a nice Amiga-wallpaper, but will look for the one i had with the digital 3D-babe again...
MUI has been fully setup, as i have got the MUI-key again. SimpleMail is fully setup, as JabberWocky (soon to be replaced with Epistula once it gets the MSN plugin)...
As you know, my Pre4 OS4.0 is fully set up now. OpenURL works the way it should with IBrowse, AWeb and SimpleMail.
My impressions of Update 4 are that the new SFS 1.252 is standard, and all my 4 partitions (OS4, Work, Diverse and Spill) are all using SFS 1.252, and as i thought that was the latest one, a new SFS 2 was also released. Putting that in Kickstart without changing the SFS 1.252 file, allows me to be able to use SFS 2 at a later date.
Copy, deleting and all disk operations happens immerdiately. Very fast!
Petunia JIT 68k is very interesting and fast! One example of this is that in Update 3, it wasn't possible to have the old OctaMED SoundStudio V1.03c to run from AmiDock (i have the TheMaestrix AHI-emulator in WBStartup), but with Update 4, it's fully possible to run OSS v1.03c right from AmiDock and it shows up immerdiately!
Speaking of AmiDock. Customizing AmiDock no longer creates the GR messages! AmiDock in Update 4 is now fully working! Could be a new improved and bugfree version! Also Screenblanker preference was most needed and very welcome! I simply just put the ScreenblankerEngine into WBStartup, customized the kind of screensaver i wanted in the ScreenBlanker preference and VOILA! When rebooting and not touching the mouse around a minute, showed up the blanker you picked! Very nice! Also mousewheel/multimedia-keys now also works! I had quite a lot of fun scrolling the mousewheel while browsing Very handy, very futurish!
What more? Oh yes, the new Warp3D-driver and the new Radeon-drivers. Well, not yet Overlayed and such, but better, faster and more stable. No need to use the stupid Picasso96Mode anymore. Type in the needed information into the information sector of the graphic card driver you're using...
PlayCD now fully works! DOSDREV i set to CD1, DEVICE is set to sii0680.device, UNIT is 1 and CDDB is commented out. Doing all that shows the CD information and music plays through my HIFI In earlier versions, it wasn't possible to bring up the CDDB, but now in Pre4 OS4.0, this function finally works!
Many here in AmigaWorld have also been very kind giving great guides to how to improve OS4 bootup. Simply put the Multitask-command Run >NIL: before the commands you know should be edited (perhaps except C:IPrefs, as this ones is focused on closing windows). That worked out for me as well and bootup happens just immerdiately!)...
Can't say much more about this update other than that it's the most stable, fastest, most powerful, awesome and most incredible update AmigaOS 4 has got ever! There is not much that is missing making OS4 fully complete!
Hyperion, i thank you! You are simply the best! A perfect Update! Congratulation!

Thanks Helgis, a nice run down.
My experiences are much the same. Some tweaking was needed mostly in regards to screenmodes and the odd "assign" changes. However, the update is great especially now I can play EUAE games ith joystick and CD32 games with joypad, abosolutely great. Only program I still have grief with is FW97 but I'll get there eventually.
Thanks Hyperion and development team, great work.

No, Internet appls are in Work:Net drawer in different sectors Like IBrowse and AWeb in Work:Net/Browsers, JabberWocky in Work:Net/Chat, WookieChat in Work:Net/IRC, to mention some You get the picture? |
That's really a good organisation... I did much the same but at a higher level... I have an Internet folder where I have WookieChat, IBrowse, AWeb, Voyager... for example...

True As long as you keep track of where programs are stored, it doesn't matter |

I've said this before, but haven't had an answer yet.
As an OS4/pre4 user, how close would you say OS4 is to completion now?
Before update 4 it was reportedly 99% complete. _________________ SEX SUX

Well, then you should keep that one where and the way it is! Make a *NEW* and small partition for the new prerelease and install it there. I don't see any need for throwing #3 away when it is working so fine.
I do have three boot partitions on my system. The first is the regular OS4-r3 setup and working like yours very well. The second is a copy of the first and only there in case the first is on the fritz. Never happened though. The third is a trimmed down version again of the first. A lot of items have been eliminated from it. No WBStartup and no extended U-S. Only the simple fare. Just in case the former two are malfunctioning. Which only happened once and that quite recently.
So *I* am left with choice about which partition to mollify or to create a fourth partition. Come to think of it I may well opt for the latter. Hm, wasting another 200Mb? No, maybe just a 100Mb one and copy the 3rd boot partition of 71Mb into that one, thereby releasing a quarter Gig partition for r4. I think I do it that way.
I'll keep you all informed.

The kickstart for OS3 do not work well whit AmigaOS update 4, and you probably get some problems if have kickstart from upate 4 loaded, when your using AmigaOS4 update 3, butt if you make few changes to kickstart layout you should be able to select what kickstart modules to load, butt if you do it incorrectly have lots of problems.
I say replace update 3, whit update 4, on all bootable partitions, keep update 3 as backup when every you need a library or some thing.
Any way UBoot as few option for booting from different devices, maybe this is they way to go.

Hopefully OS4 will always be only 99% complete.
There is no valid answer to your question.Last edited by sundown on 21-Feb-2006 at 05:25 PM.

I've heard this makes warp3d games run at top speed.
The audio on my micro will cut out when scrolling a pdf file with it set to "yes" & setting it to "no" fixes the problem. What to do?

I guess it's more intresting to know which part that are intended for being added in the first OS4 release.
