| One thing I was wondering about is whether SNAP is still going to be part of OS4. Update 4 doesn't include it and it has been said that update 4 would have been the official OS4 release had there been new hardware available. So is SNAP still going to be part of OS4.0?
The announcement that Scitech was going to integrate SNAP drivers into OS4 was way back in2003. IIRC, Hyperion even gave Scitech vgabios emulation/bootstrap code for PPC machines. Since then we haven't really heard anything about SNAP and it's adaptation to OS4. Are Scitech still working on it or did they say "So long, and thanks for all the code"?
There's nothing wrong with Forefront's Radeon driver. It's just that SNAP will provide (2D graphics) support for way more cards than just the Radeon series.

My guess is that time will tell. If the HW issue takes alot longer then Hyperion will have lots of time to add more and more features.
Oh and BTW they have talked about it a several occations... Don't have a link though.. But the last IRC session mentioned it if i remember correct.Last edited by WOSPUPOS4 on 19-Apr-2006 at 04:02 PM.

| SNAP has always seemed a bit of a red herring to me. It will be great when/if AOS is used as an embedded OS as it would mean almost any graphics chip could be used. It seems fairly pointless for desktop use though, as we require 3D drivers as well. plus, who can't buy a Radeon to stick into their Amiga?

Time will indeed tell. In the meantime, I hope that someone who knows may tell us a bit earlier
Actually, I was under the impression that Scitech itself was responsible for the OS4 version od SNAP. Therefore Hyperion's developers don't need to spend any time on it. Either way, it's been over three years since the announcement. That's plenty of time to get something working, even if it isn't completely finished. We've heard and seen absolutely nothing.
EDIT: Ok, maybe not absolutely nothing, but I haven't seen anything concrete Last edited by Hans on 19-Apr-2006 at 04:09 PM.

Yeah that would be nice. I just went through alot of threads where that question was asked. But everytime either Enthilza or Rogue dodged that question |

| Finaly found a nice thread about SNAP.
SNAP
The SNAP port looks like it was finished a little over 1 year ago. Couldn't find any up to date information on the integration into OS4 though. Last edited by WOSPUPOS4 on 19-Apr-2006 at 04:25 PM.

Thanks for the link.

If you dig further, you'll see that there's talk about SNAP being integrated only in the final version of OS4... that is, not in the prerelease. |
Ok. So is this still the case? Is SNAP progressing? Is it functional (i.e. does someone have an OS4 machine with it installed and working). Or are we just not allowed to know?

| Someone should realy scan though AW.Net for ALL comments made by Hyperion and make a FAQ page.
Because there are lots of info in here but it's lost in all other discussions. And as this is the only way to find the information on OS4 it would be a very nice page to have. |

Agreed. But I'm not about to volunteer as it is quite an undertaking. Earlier I suggested that the thread on update 4 issues and solutions should really be turned into an article on IntuitionBase.
In April 2005 Rogue said: Quote:
SNAP porting is completed, but not yet integrated into the system. |
So it was getting there back in 2005. My question now is, if update 4 had been final instead, would SNAP have been included? I guess that hinges on whether it is completely finished and integrated yet.

I don't know why but my mind says that it would not make OS4 final at present time. I must have read it somewhere in a comment by Rogue or i have just dreamt it
Any how it would be nice to know. And if it's time then how long would it need to be included ? (thinking if no HW is out in the same timeframe)

Snap was less important than Uboot, Media Toolbox or other components done by Andrea and other people. So of course it is late but it will be done.
I could give more details but I prefer to keep your surprise when you will see it running

Well that should become AmigaOS4 slogan. Or maybe "Get the Power!"
