| It has been almost 4 months since update 4 was released back in February.
Can anyone from Hyperion give us an update on what progress has been made since then?
No need for large details, just some short notes would be nice.
I am thinking along the lines of things like: - new memory system in place and stable - large file support implemented system-wide - more traps for badly behaved code - progress on 3D support - etc...
If this isn't possible, no problem. Have a great day!

new memory system in place and stable |
Yes, the new memory system is working nicely, matter of fact is that all newer kernels have been build with it and the old one is deprecated. Speed tests indicate that the new system is considerably faster as well. It's not quite finalized, the bitmap-based page allocator is currently being replaced by a buddy system, which should give an additional boost in performance.
Thomas has written a profiler for the kernel to identify some hotspots, it gave a few clues as to where we can do futher optimizations.

Most components use large file support where appropriate.

more traps for badly behaved code |
The new memory system revealed a few more ill-behaving programs, but in general I was surprised to see that it didn't have as much negative impact as I originally thought it would have.

So how far off in the future is the memory swap system?

Are we due for an Update5 soon? Or do you want to finish overlay and OpenGL first?

I need to find a way to reproduce this problem, apparently it doesn't happen on all cards. I'll try to invest a day of work into that this week, if I can manage. _________________ Seriously, if you want to contact me do not bother sending me a PM here. Write me a mail |

No Update #5 is planned right now, but given that we almost regularily released updates every six or so months, it might come. I still hope that a final release comes earlier, though._________________ Seriously, if you want to contact me do not bother sending me a PM here. Write me a mail |

Our world won't stop spinning after the final version I hope? What is actually the key diffence between an update and the final version? No more updates after a final?
Btw, pleased to see the new memory system takes up shape so well!

I'll need to first of all find out where it is crashing. I have a SCSI card here somewhere (I think; there's an awful lot of hardware lying around here) and with a bit of luck I am also "affected". _________________ Seriously, if you want to contact me do not bother sending me a PM here. I suppose there will be updates after the final, but I can't really tell you... Might be regulated contractually, I don't know._________________ Seriously, if you want to contact me do not bother sending me a PM here. Write me a mail |

Oh, nice... How to ask in a new way... Care to put a percentage on this?

Have Hyperion been able to carry on doing any game porting work alongside the developement of OS4. How soon after OS4 final can we expect more software to buy from Hyperion. How many people work for Hyperion at the moment I know they had a few Linux developers working on Gorky 17 a while back. |

Well I certainly hope it will be more than 30%. Naturally, no OS is ever finished. _________________ Seriously, if you want to contact me do not bother sending me a PM here. Write me a mail |
