HI ALL!
I've installed OS4 final on my A1SE

512MB RAM
Radeon 9250
Sil680

The problem is:

After a few seconds (about 30/45) usb stops to work(only mice connected to usb) and togheter dont work anymore sound (crapyng sound) and ethernet(I cant connect anywhere... neither on router home page)...

Any idea on what happen and how to solve that?

THANKs in advance!

Tuxedo.

P.S. Any news on status of drivers for PCI cards to solve USB problems(mass storage) of A1SE?

P.P.S. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

USB cant work stable on an A1SE, no matter if you use the builtin USB
ports or a PCI card.

After installing OS4 from CD, edit Kickstart/KickLayout, place a semicolon
at the start of the line which loads Kickstart/uhci.usbhcd, save, edit
S:Startup-Sequence, place a semicolon at the start of the line which
calls USBCtrl, save, power off, unplug all USB devices, power on, all
your A1SE USB problems are fixed. AFAIK there exists no other fix.

@TetiSoft

I've used usb mouse (only that) since os4 final was out on update4...
AndIt works canghing some files in devs:usb with the ones from upd3...
However all works ok...
Now this wasnt more possible (I try) and than I dont know how to solve that problems...
Hope to get some nice hints...

Other A1SE users have same problem?

My config listed above but forgotten:

Audigy1 soundcard.

Maybe something wrong with uboot?
IRQ?

Yes, me :)

You may eventually find a combination of kernels, USB drivers, IDE IRQ/DMA
settings etc. where it looks as if it would be possible to use USB on an
A1SE, but this is just the "before the next crash/freeze/network stall/
harddisk read error/sound output freeze" situation which *will* turn from
"before" to "now causing trouble" in the next second, minute or hour.
Often the "trouble state" then can only be left with the power switch,
a simple reset button press may not be enough to e.g. get the network
chip operational again.

DMA on the A1SE is a problem, USB cant work without DMA, using ethernet/
harddisk/sound DMA together with USB will crash sooner or later. IIRC
I've even seen UBoot itself crashing sometimes when it tried to scan the USB
bus and more than a mouse was attached, which proves the problem is the
hardware, not OS4.

And yes, even a separate USB PCI card doesnt fix that. Dont use USB on an
A1SE, thats the only known fix for its USB problems.

@Tuxedo

Hi, A1SE user here as well, I can confirm what TetiSoft said, sorry but it`s a hopeless case, for USB on the SE.

@TetiSoft

I've used usb mouse on A1SE fro years(from first release) and never got serious problems...
Ok sometime network stall(VERY rare and only in system intense use...), sound ok and for HD I use Sil680...

And...

If it works one time WHY it cant work now too?

Another SERIOUS problem was that on ps2 adapter my optical usb mouse(and all other I've tryed) was REALLY bad to use(wasnt precise and wasnt continuous in the movements especially in little movements).

Regarding usb PCI card someone tell me that there's a PCI card with a specific chipset(maybe texas i dont remember now) that dont have problems with at least mouse and keyboards(massstorage dont know), but driver on beta atm...

So maybe in (near) future we canb use usb peripherials on SE(I hope)...

Tuxedo.

Well, I also have a SII0680 card in the A1SE, and I also have the impression
that the A1SE USB problems appeared not as often in previous OS4 betas, but
they appeared, and you just confirmed they also appeared for you.

> If it works one time WHY it cant work now too?

From a developers point of view, the worst thing that can happen is hardware
which works most of the time. When you cant rely on the hardware, you should
not use it. The second worse thing is to explain to users that there exists
a difference between "seems to work most of the time but is not stable" and
"works", I'm just trying to do this :) You cant rely on USB with the A1SE,
so dont use it, it can and it will cause trouble.

A real PS/2 mouse without adapter may work better and is probably cheaper
than trying to replace the A1SE with an A1XE or MicroA1 and probably its
better to invest this small amount of money instead of trying to use USB
on the A1SE.

I have an USB PCI card in the A1SE, well, it seems I cant deny that there
exists an experimental driver for USB OHCI PCI cards, yes, older versions
only worked well with OHCI chipsets of a specific manufacturer, and yes,
even this driver doesnt work stable on the A1SE.

Switch off the computer and detach all cables. Remove the A1-SE motherboard and place it on a flat surface. Strike it repeatedly with a large hammer.

There, all your SE problems solved!

(seriously, no there isn't any solution to the SE's USB problems because it's not the USB controller or driver that's broken it's the SE's PCI bus. No PCI device can ever be guaranteed to function correctly on that board.)

There is no point in investing valuable developer time in the SE.

@ALL

Okok...
No good news but ok...

@Ssolie

???
Why do you have Panda?
OS4 works on that board right now?
Or other reasons?

No ssolie simply means that the problems are not solvable,
because of this there's no point spending valuble time searching
for fixes.
The SE boards are simply broken beyond repair, sorry.

'Nother SE user here. I had a similar problem with one of the earlier updates. I used a usb mouse without problem, but after the update it quit working. I am now using an optical usb mouse with a ps/2 adapter. In earlier versions I was not happy with ps/2 operation, but that was fixed in the previous update. With the current release, I don't have any complaints whatsoever.
Like the others, I have not had good luck on the usb side. Certain parts work...most of the time...other parts such as mass storage don't work at all.

@Tuxedo

My advice to anyone with an A1SE. Unload it now, before new models come out. Sell it on eBay or other. Be sure the new buyer knows all the known problems with SE model. You'll probably take quite a loss. Then buy one of the new Amigas coming out in the future.
