| Okay, here's what I am noticing with OS4 final...many programs that use pre- defined screen modes no longer work properly. Oh some of them work, but to view the screen when I start the program, first all I see is my monitor go into a mode it cannot display...something at 85Hz...but....if I hit Amiga-M and go back to workbench, then drag down the workbench screen...there it is! Whatever program screen I was running... Anyway...I read in one of these posts somewhere that the scrren mode IDs have been shifted with OS4 Final. Is this true? If so, will it then be necessary for me to get new software updates for ALL programs that use screen mode IDs (meaning many games,E-UAE, SCUMM-VM, the list goes on and on)? Or...is there something I can do to get the correct screen Modes working? Or...have I done something wrong in setting up my OS4 Final?
Thanks for any helpful replies!
Scott

There is an icon in Dev:Monitors that carries the graphics setup. Open the information for this icon and look at its tooltypes. If there is a mode that has a frequency that your monitor doesn't support, comment that line, or just change the frequency. May be that helps.

We're all in the same boat -- I imagine. I've already had trouble with TVPaint where I couldn't get back to WB until I closed that app. Then I had AWeb open on its own screen whereas I'd run it on WB so I had access to NotePad.
With AWeb; it was necessary to select the desired screen under its own prefs.
I would imagine that the screen database is stored in a new location now. I've booted up my Alt_OS4 partition to search but its hard going as its Dock gets a Grim Reaper on launch.
Anyhow, formerly a list of screens was accessable with Prefs/Screens. You just can't beat having a full backup, or alternate WB, for reference!
(Edit) Just had a search in Devs after reading Firbodi's post. In my 'Alt' the Devs/Monitors/Radeon icon reveals under the Icon/Information menu: BOARDTYPE=Radeon CMPLENGTH=6 SETTINGSFILE=SYS:Devs/ Picasso96Settings (BORDERBLANK=Yes) (BIGSPRITE=Yes) (SOFTSPRITE=Yes)
. . . now the file Picasso96Settings lists with NotePad but I don't think it should be altered other than with Picasso96Mode (Prefs/). In like manner Picasso96Settings-Radeon lists a similar, but shorter, file (in SYS:Devs/).

AFAIK Picasso96Setting and the file in SYS:Devs/ are the old way graphics were set before OS4 update 4. These files are absolete now. You're supposed to only use the tooltypes of the icon in Devs:Monitor/ drawer. Defining new modes are so easy this way. Here is my tooltypes for example.
BOARDTYPE=Radeon CMPLENGTH=6 (BORDERBLANK=Yes) (BIGSPRITE=Yes) (SOFTSPRITE=Yes) IGNOREMASK=Yes (DISPLAYCHAIN=Yes) FAKENATIVEMODES=No VSYNCMIN=60 VSYNCMAX=75 HSYNCMIN=31500 HSYNCMAX=57000 MODE=640x480@75 MODE=800x600@75 MODE=1024x768@70 INTERRUPT=Yes
If you switch to this method, the first time you reboot, WB mode will be screwed. Just set it again, and save.

I always have had managed my Screenmodes with Picasso96Mode Prefs program, on my A1200 with the MerlinII and on the WinUAE with uaegfx-driver. You can create/modify/remove new/unuseable screenmodes in a very simple way. Other than on Win-machines, you have here the possibility, to adapt your prefered screenmodes precise to your monitor.
It is very intuitive to handle, and not dangerous to use because modern Monitors are self-protected. So, if you exceed the limits of your monitor, it will display you a message "Out of range" or similar.
A generic guide:
First of all, click once on the Icon of the Monitor in OS4:Devs/Monitors and press Right AMIGA & I. Go to Icon-Tab, and alter the values of: VSYNCMIN VSYNCMAX HSYNCMIN HSYNCMAX to the values of your monitor (you find these in the manual of your monitor under Technical Data (or similar). example:
50 - 120 Hz (refresh rate) 30 - 85 kHz (horizontal synchronisation)
VSYNCMIN = 50 VSYNCMAX = 120 HSYNCMIN = 30000 HSYNCMAX = 85000
See on this picture:
(You can download it from: http://www.hansfaust.de/privat/Picasso96Mode.gif)
In the "Available Monitors" field you see normaly "Radeon 7000" if you have no other graphics card installed. This is the name of the file in the DEVS:monitors. Activate it, if not already active.
In the right upper side you see a "flying" item under the cursor. This you gain, when you click left -> hold down the mousebutton -> move the mouse fast right or left. While holding left mousebutton you can move the item around.
To create a new Resolution:
1. Drag&Drop a "New Item" from the "Create new item" gadget to "Available Resolutions".
2. Alter "Width" and "Height" in the Resolution data to the wished values. I recommend only to create/use usual values. 640x480 800x600 1074x768 1280x1024 1600x1200 (these all 4/3 resolution) Let "Name" and "DisplayIDBase" alone, this will be set automatically
Next: create new Modes for the Resolutions (I recommend not to touch any value "by Hand" - direct input - if you don't know what this value is for, or what a alteration effects.)
1. Drag&Drop a "New Item" from the "Create new item" gadget to "Available Modes of the selected Resolutions". You can see, that the depth in the "Modes Data" is set to 256 colors.
2. Click the "Test" gadget. Is the testpicture showen well, press ENTER otherwise press ESC and follow 3.
3. Click "Edit" gadget. On the now appearing screen you can easy edit the Mode-values with the keyboard. The keyboard shortcuts are showen in the middle of the screen.
IMPORTANT! ESC is not only the Cancel-shortcut also the PANIC-button, to break the edit and switch back to Workbench if somewhat goes totaly wrong.
I presume you are familiary with the onscreen display(OSD) of your monitor. All values should be reset at first to factory defaults. Only if you can't find values in the Edit-mode of Picasso96, which set the display correct, you should alter the OSD-values later.
In Picasso96 Edit-Mode always have a look at the "Frequencies", to stay always in the boundaries of your monitor values.
You have to experiment a while, which values are the best for your Monitor.
If you found the best values for your display, leave the Edit-mode with ENTER, or if you want to cancel this edit press ESC.
After you found good values "Test" your new values. If all is, like you wish, click the "Use" gadget, to overtake your values.
4. Now "Copy" your new created Mode, by Click&Hold->fast move left or right->drag to the "Copy Item"->release left button method. Set the "Depth" of the copy to "HiColor", by choosing the scroll-gadget in the "Mode Data". Then click on the "Test"-gadget. If you can see this mode now proper, you haven't to do anymore.
5. Create again a copy of a mode in the same manner, but set the Depth to "True Color & Alpha". Test also this mode. Only if the Test-display is not like expected, click "Edit". Otherwise: Congratulation! Your first new Resolution is created.
Repeat the procedure on all new Resolution (or if you want also on existing resolutions, to correct the values to your display).
If you want to kill any item (Resolution or Mode): Click&Hold->fast move left or right->drag to the "Kill Item" gadget->release left button
If you ALL Editings have finished, click as very last the "Save" gadget. The computer must be rebooted. Wait up Picasso96Mode comes with the requester "Reboot Now", and make a reboot.
After this procedure, you can use your new modes in the programs you want.
Hopeful this helps a little.
Kindly alfa

Yes. This is how it's supposed to be on OS4. OS4 supports Picasso96Settings, but using the icon in Devs:Monitor is easier for me. I just type in the modes I need and that's it.

Of course, this is done very much faster, and surely also much more secure. But I guess, if anyone is using an older Monitor - like I do - the manual method is more accurate.
AND I use my monitor for my classic towered A1200, my PEGASOS-machine and my µA1 machine. Because of this, I MUST keep the OSD-settings. Otherwise I have to change them always I switch to another machine.
NB.: the PEGASOS and the µA1 are sponsored machines. I by myself never have the money, to buy such expensive hardware ... I'm a pensioner of illness.

My default setting look exactly like this shown for the RADEON driver. What I am seeing is that my LCD monitor does not support 85Hz VSYNCMAX...looks like it must be set to 75Hz or so....I will try setting it down to 75Hz and see if that helps.
Thanks,

Thanks...it seems to have worked! I changed my screen frequencies down from 85Hz to 75Hz and now it looks like things are working!
Thanks for your help.
