Change the default refresh rate on OS4?

Hi there

I have a little problem with the refresh rate of my OS4 display. The res is 1280x1024@60Hz, but I what to change it to 70-75Hz. I have tryed P96Mode, but my monitor says that the res (1280x1024) is not supported (but it works with the OS4 1280x1024 default screen). I can edit a 1024x768 in P96Mode, and it works fine. I have checked the monitor manual, to see if the res and r.rate are supported, and the maximum res that the monitor can handle is 1280x1024@75Hz (pixelclock 135MHz).

My setup:
AmigaOneXE G4@800MHz, Radeon 9250, Fujitsu Siemens 19" LCD monitor, OS4 (v52.1).

1) Is there any way to change the OS4's monitor default refresh rate?
2) Why is the P96Mode in 1280x1024 not working? (And can I get it to work?)

Hope any one can help me here...

@Micam

ok, here we go again...

First, stop using p96mode. you should be using tooltypes in the devs:monitors/ icon

check your monitor manual for the figures you need, for example mine are:

VSYNCMIN=56
VSYNCMAX=75
HSYNCMIN=31469
HSYNCMAX=79976
MODE=1680x1050@60
MODE=1280x1024@75
MODE=1024x768@75
MODE=800x600@75
MODE=640x480@75
MODE=320x240@75
MODE=720x576@75

if you set up these vaules and they still don't work, check for a devs:picasso96settings file, if it's there rename it to disable it.

@Severin

Thank you for your fast reply.

I am happy to say, that it works now.
It's kind a funny, but my monitor says that it's now in 75Hz, but OS4 (ScreenMode) still say's it's in 60Hz mode (a little bug in OS4 i guess).

But thanks you you help

@Severin

If I alter the 1280x1024 mode above a value of 60, the mode disappears from my screen mode preferences. Anyone know why? The monitor supports that resolution up to 99hz.

@logicalheart

See the values "HSYNCMIN/HSYNCMAX" and "VSYNCMIN/VSYNCMAX" up there in Severin's post? They must be entered in the tooltypes to reflect the limits that your monitor can handle. If a mode demands scan rates outside those limits, the driver will not allow it (to prevent damage to old monitors), hence you won't see it in the list of available screen modes.

@tonyw

Here are my default "Radeon" settings:

VSYNCMIN=60
VSYNCMAX=85
HSYNCMIN=31500
HSYNCMAX=64000
MODE=640x480@85
MODE=800x600@75
MODE=1024x768@72
MODE=1280x1024@60

All of these screen modes work.
If I change mode 1280x1024 to 75, 85, or anything above 60, the mode disappears.

The 64 kHz HSYNCMAX is the limitation which doesnt allow you
to run 1280*1024 with more than 60 Hz. Check your monitor manual, when the
value is correct this monitor cant display the resolution with a higher
refresh rate, for 75Hz you need a 80kHz monitor and for 85Hz you need a 91kHz monitor.

Slighty OT, but:

Wouldn't it be possible to create a (new) GUI for the Monitor drivers
that modifies the tooltypes of the icons. That would be a big help.

Picasso96 could then be put in the garbage can to rest.

Maybe. I've written a ScreenModes.doc file which explains how the
new P96 monitor tooltypes work, IIRC I've submitted it also as an article
on the amigans.net website. The relevant snippet for this thread is
Quote:

Typical resolutions and frequencies supported by many monitors are
640x350@85 (37.9kHz)
640x400@85 (37.9kHz)
640x480@60 (31.5kHz)
or 640x480@72 (37.9kHz)
or 640x480@75 (37.5kHz)
or 640x480@85 (43.3kHz)
720x400@85 (37.9kHz)
800x600@56 (35.2kHz)
or 800x600@60 (37.9kHz)
or 800x600@72 (48.1kHz)
or 800x600@75 (46.9kHz)
or 800x600@85 (53.7kHz)
1024x768@60 (48.4kHz)
or 1024x768@70 (56.5kHz)
or 1024x768@75 (60.0kHz)
or 1024x768@85 (68.7kHz)
or 1024x768i@43 (35.5kHz)
1152x864@75 (67.5kHz)
1280x960@60 (60.0kHz)
or 1280x960@85 (85.9kHz)
1280x1024@60 (64.0kHz)
or 1280x1024@75 (80.0kHz)
or 1280x1024@85 (91.1kHz)
1600x1200@60 (75.0kHz)
or 1600x1200@65 (81.3kHz)
or 1600x1200@70 (87.5kHz)
or 1600x1200@75 (93.8kHz)
or 1600x1200@85 (106.3kHz)
1792x1344@60 (83.6kHz)
or 1792x1344@75 (106.3kHz)

No, the Picasso96Mode editor supports some more esoteric features like
specifying the exact position of the display on the screen, which may
be needed by some (probably only old) monitors.

@TetiSoft

With respect to the table you provided, what is the relation between the horizontal resolution, vertical resolution and refresh rate on one hand and the frequency on the other? Iow, can i calculate that frequency using those three parameters?

@OldFart

Search for "VESA GENERALIZED TIMING FORMULA (GTF)". There seems to even
exist a linux tool named gtf. At www.vesa.org I have no luck trying to
get the info anonymous.

@OldFart

For a rough estimate you just multiply the vertical lines with the refresh rate and add 5%:

1280x1024@60 -> 1024 * 60 * 1.05 = 64512 -> 64.5kHz

There are two Excel-sheets:
THE VESA GENERALIZED TIMING FORMULA (GTF)
VESA COORDINATED VIDEO TIMING (CVT)

which will calculate the VESA timings based on the resolution and other things. The CVT is newer than the GTF.

It could be possible to extract the formula out of this sheets but I wasn't interessted enough to do it myself.

@TetiSoft

Oh, that's a silly mistake I made. Thanks for the explanation.
I'm now enjoying the 1280x1024 screen mode. :)
