Need help guys, have run out of ideas. I didn't see THIS issue in the big threads so...

My CD was burned with AmiDVD. I have it set for both UBoot and Amiga boot. (I have also tried just Uboot). In both cases thr CD boots properly, the Amiga 4.1 screen is displayed. Then the screen blanks to black and after a few more seconds of CD rdrive running it just stops..

any ideas?

@Nagasakee

I recorded the same as you, with AmiDVD, boot AmigaOS 4 and U-boot t selected, and I work perfectly, it is possible that your ISO file is defective, download the file from the Hyperion website and try it again.

@Nagasakee
Maybe your monitor has problem with the default resolution? That could lead to a black screen.
I guess you dont have a different monitor that you could try?
Also make sure you verify the cd when burning, so you are 100% sure it was burner properly.

I allso burned the ISO with AmiDVD before I installed the fresh OS4.1 Update 1. You don'T have to select U-Boot options and Amiga Boot options. All those Infos are allready on the ISO... just burn it normal and everything is ok, then try again.

@Nagasakee

Does the SAM read the Kickstart from HDD or CD if you want to boot from the Install-CD?

@Nagasakee

As ZeroG is hinting at, make sure it's booting from the CD.

It should be quite obvious if it's loading the kickstart from the CD as that's a lot slower, but if any boot partition on your HD has a higher priority than -1 it may very well be loading the startup-sequence off the HD.

Either check the priority of your partition with MediaToolbox or force it to load the startup-sequence from the CD in the Early Startup Menu by holding Scroll Lock or LMB+RMB down as soon as it finishes loading the kickstart.

@Nagasakee

Are you using a CD-R OR A CD-RW? Many drives won't boot from a CD-RW and will only work with a CD-R.

Another possible problem: did you use IBrowse to download the ISO? There is a problem with Hyperion's website and IBrowse or AWeb, you'll have to use OWB or a PC.

@tonyw

Yes there was a problem using IB when downloading. Then with OWB it worked.
(Timberwolf please;)

That might be the answer or monitor/display settings?

That would have to be an old drive! I always burn CDRW's for OS updates. And anytime I need an ISO on disc.

@Nagasakee

Burn the ISO with other program AmiDVD is old and.... for example Frying Pan or Nero if you have one PC, these programs work better than the old AmiDVD (we need software of this type too not only a good Interner browser).

AmiDVD is newer than FP and Nero...
and it does work perfectly here.

@Templario

Maybe you are thinking about MakeCD, not AmiDVD. MakeCD is old alright. But it still has worked fine for this type of thing for me, until I started using AmiDVD instead.

@Nagasakee

To make sure your download isn't corrupt, check its md5sum and size against these:

> md5sum Sam440InstallCD-Upd1.lha
907c50ac25510b001b661a9985e4daea Sam440InstallCD-Upd1.lha

> list Sam440InstallCD-Upd1.lha
Sam440InstallCD-Upd1.lha 143834349 ----rw-d 17-Jan-10 19:56:05

Also, are you sure you connected your CD and HDD to the correct SATA ports? I guess you did, since you say it does boot up some of the way, but just in case.

Best regards,

Niels

@Nagasakee

Possibly relevant - but you have a SAM:

I had problems like yours both on bootup of the install CD and later on bootup of the installed OS on two A1s. i.e. workbench won't appear. When I remove my 4 gig memory stick from a USB port, half fixed (15k pulldown resistors inserted in front USB cable connectors) or unfixed, powered hub or no hub, workbench duly appears. I have been hoping to check this memory stick out on Cobra's SAM shortly as so far the record of what works now with SAM USB ports is impressive compared to my experience with A1s.

Other less relevant experiences:

I have downloaded the OS4.1.1 archive 3 times, once corrupted. I have failed to cut a DVD or CD twice with AmiDVD, no failures with FryingPan so far, nor any CD with makeCD. I have also succeeded in making DVDs and CDs with AmiDVD. AmiDVD is very handy for checking out at a glance just what a newly installed disc writer (rescued from another machine) is supposed do.

I have also had the installed OS fail to get to workbench on several occasions following installation of some piece of old software when there has been a lockup on conclusion of the installation (writing to sys: I suppose). Repeated reboots succeed no better until I boot from the OS install CD. When the install options window appears I usually find a check with Partitionwizard reveals all OK, twice I've had to wait a bit while sys: becomes reinitialized. I begin to wonder about old install programs!

While trying to clean install the OS update to a second IDE harddrive connected in parallel to the first allready updated HD the install program wandered away and got lost while sorting out prefs and one or two other matters near the end of the install process. I reformatted that partition then succeeded by copying sys: from the already installed drive to the new one plus tidy up of paths afterwards.

Apart from these issues I am delighted generally with the update.

Noel

He said that the 4.1 screen pops up, which suggests to me that kickstart has been loaded.

@ZeroG & nbache

Not I speak about AmiDVD because I burned the last Firmware CD for my Sam and well I had that burned a new CD with Frying Pan.

@NoelFuller

I disagree on one comment only.

The SAM comment.

I think it depends if one has a SAM or SAM Flex, as so far, I have known SAM Flex owners to encounter more problems then the SAM440EP owners who decide to keep the original Onboard settings, rather than trying to upgrade to a Radeon 9250(which could also be a downgrade if one has less functionality)

This is just my humble opion, and may not be an accurate statistic.

Cheers

@thread

Sorry I haven't answered for a couple of days. The problem is now worse...

To reply to some of the good suggestions...

I changed my monitor per the suggestion that my default monitor could not handle the update resolution. I ran the install on the new monitor at 1280x1024x60 hz. Same blank screen.

First...I DID redownload the Hyperion file. Checksum matches correctly, as does the file size per above.

When burning the ISO file (again with AmiDVD) I did not check either Uboot or Amiga boot, again per above suggestion.

The screen blanks AFTER loading the Amiga OS 4.1 splash screen and AFTER kickstart loads.

Kickstart IS loading from the CD and not the SATA HD. (confirmed) (BTW I have a one terabyte drive, broken into three partitions DH0, DH1, and DH2.

I went into Media Toolbox and noticed my hard drive loading at Priority 0, so changed it to "-1" per the suggestion above.

The SAM does not boot now, even via its normal HD boot, instead gets to the splash screen then goes into the infamous old style red guru message.

At this point I am considering reloading the original CD and reformatting the drive. There is nothing on the HD I really need. Do you think this approach would work and is the best method now?

@Nagasakee

The latest problem with the guru is not good. Looks like they still need to crush some OS4 bugs if it is crashing at bootup!

AFAIK the OS4 CD doesn't look for a network. But maybe you need to check your drives and see if you have 1.5Gb speed set.

You may have spotted a similar thread I created about a failed Sam install. We got all these problems, mostly ending up on a Kickstart screen. The machine has now been sent back to the dealer.
