I have a little problem with my AmigaOS 4.1. When I try to quit I get a message: Can not quit yet, there are 8 WB Launched programs. I've always had this problem. No use to install it all again. I have update 2 installed. Very annoying..

@Mr_Byte

Hi,

the message is from Workbench, not from AmigaOS.
Good thing you don't need to quit/shutdown Workbench/AOS like Desktop/Win.

So, just ignore the mesage and turn off your Amiga.

If you really want to close WB, then you have to quit almost everything that is run from WBStartup and other places... (Well in fact, only prgs that lock WB have to be quit, but it's hard to distinguish )
It's a time consuming and senseless task. ;)

CU,
Mario

@padrino

Ok. I'm new with amigaos4.1. In MorphOS I just needed to press quit to turn off the computer. But if this is normal then I can relax.

@Mr_Byte

I've never quite understood the quit on os4. Think it is something dragged along from the classic era. Just turn it off using the swedish button.

This is something that irritated me a lot with WB3. It's okay to remove the WB and go to dos without having to reboot and start without startup-sequence.
But this is probably something that is not necessary with OS4, so it should only be a turn off or reboot button, as with MorphOS.

@1970

Just take short look at the power led to see if there is any activity, then press the power button and you be fine, the SFS file-system system should not be damaged if you turn of your computer in the wrong time, but its always good to be one the safe side.

@NutsAboutAmiga

But if I have to move from the chair to reach the power button, then?
Anyway it should not be such bugs.

@Mr_Byte

I remember this since OS3.0!

Yes it is annoying but how many times do we need to quit and go back to DOS?

If I need to quit I just turn off. Or reboot for a restart.

I find Amiga Workbench quiting is as good as the Mac Finder restarting. I've never seen either do that AFAICR!

But I think it would have been better if I could turned off the computer in workbench. Now i must go under the table and hold the on/off button 3sec to turn it off.

@Mr_Byte

Workbench is nothing more than an application, and as such, offers the standard "About" and "Quit" menu items.

Of course if you're used to other operating systems it can be misconstrued as "Shutdown".

As padrino mentions, any process launched by workbench will prevent it from closing, but if you close everything and quit the WB, unless you kept a Shell open, quitting the workbench would leave you with a blank screen and no way to start any program

As for losing data or a partition by turning the machine off, you'd have to be really careless to make that happen. If you're in the middle of a download straight to disk or copying some large file, obviously you're not going to turn the machine off, and even if you do, you'd just lose or corrupt that last file, not the whole partition.

Also, the FastFileSystem will automatically "validate" (repair) its allocation table next time it starts if it got interrupted while writing to the disk.

To play it safe normally you'd wait 3 seconds after the last write operation before turning the machine off and would watch the drive LED to make sure it's not blinking as you press the button.

Now if you're really paranoid you can soft reboot the machine first and once the screen cycles on/off/on you can press the power button as the reset handler will have made sure that all write operations have ended before rebooting.

I rarely turn my Amigas off but over the course of 25 years or so I must have turned them off hundreds of time, not to mention the occasional power failures, and never lost any data.

On the other hand I can't count the number of times I had something saved to the RAM disk only and rebooted :-/

It might be possible to turn it off via software, it depends if the peg board has some lines wired to the atx connector to send the required signal to the power supply, and someone would have to write a small command to trigger that signal.

Could be a fun little project to research.

Now i remember, loadwb, endcli and newcli. This is too cumbersome, WB need a good update.

What is cumbersome? You really think you know what you are talking about? Ever worked with Linux?

Yep. Already here. My PegasosII-Workbench has the menu entries "Reboot (Warm)", "Reboot (Cold)" and "Shutdown" -> see ZeroG's link for the shutdown tool.

I do not like Linux.

cumbersome=
1. Difficult to handle because of weight or bulk.
2. Troublesome or onerous.

It's much faster to quite the WB to CLI with just one click. But is it possible, and is it necessary at all nowadays? I do not think so.
