| Wow!
I installed OS4.1 updates 1 and 2 recently, and as I sat there looking at my Amiga One and next to it on the desk my netbook with it's USB DVD/CD drive I had the thought "I wonder if....." So I connected my USB DVD drive up to the Amiga One and amazingly, when I inserted a CD or DVD, an icon shows up on my Amiga Workbench and the data can be read perfectly! Cool! Keeping in mind that my USB port is only 1.1, the data transfer is slow. But the fact that it works is amazing at all! Great work guys! OS4 just keeps getting better and better!
I have tried using Frying Pan and AmiDVD to burn to the USB DVD drive - but with no success. Is there a way to burn CDs or DVDs using the USB DVD/CD drive on a UA1-c?
Surely one of the burner programs can do this?

maybe your drive has only mounted using usb mass storage class. In this case it is not enough to write data to disk. There should be some USB status program in sys:prefs or sys:utilities that can show you if it is mounted as mass storage. |

Using the "Exchange" program you must be able to see a commodity "Mass storage" or something like that., open it (can't remember the shortcurt). If your DVD drive is listed there then it has been mounted using mass storage driver. Anyway I don't know if Beeblebrox is right or not about ability to burn on a mass storage device. _________________ AOS 4.1 : I dream it, Hyperion did it ! Now dreaming AOS 4.2... Yes this is good. I was probalby as excited when I plugged a SCSI DVDROM into my A1200 and saw how it could read DVDs straight away.
But I did expect this to work. Most likely when it mounts a drive on USB it determines the filesystem and mounts it as such. Hence why we can use Amiga formatted flash drives.
Okay going from a flash drive it should be using usbdisk.device. Get info in the icon in Workbench and you will see the device and unit. Try plugging the DOS device into the icon of AmiDVD. Or the device and unit into MakeCD.

Yes, using exchange I see the device mounted - USB_CD0: using usbdisk.device. I set up AmiDVD to use these device names and sure enough my USB DVD drive does come up and AmiDVD allows me to burn to my disks! However, when the burning of a CD-R is nearly complete, and AmiDVD indicates "flushing cache - please wait", AmiDVD starts spewing the error message: SCSI command 03 00 00 00 12 00 failed err = 29 over and over again forever.
I lost one CD-R this way. The second time I tried to burn a CR-R, when I got the message "flushing cache" I quickly unplugged and replugged the USB cable to the DVD drive and the message changed to "closing disk - please wait", at which time I got an error message of: SCSI command 46 00 00 00 00 00 00 10 00 00 failed err = 29 over and over. followed by SCSI command 51 0 00 00 00 00 00 00 22 00 failed err = 29
However, I ejected the CD, reinserted it, and it did actually burn the data! I have not verified every track...but it seems to have burned and to be accessible okay. Nothing like hacking to get things to work!
Of course, I prefer finding out if there is any fix for AmiDVD that can get it to properly close the session and clean up as it should without errors.
Oh, I also hacked Basilisk II (the latest from OS4Depot) with a hex/ascii editor to use usbdisk.device in place of one of it's other menu listed CD driver devices (sii0680ide.device I think) and sure enough, my emulated MAC now sees the USB DVD drive and I can install all sorts of software from CDs onto my MAC system partion!
But I find with Basilisk II that although I can get a nice display in either thousands or millions of colors, I haven;t been able to get it to work with 256 colors - even when I check the box in the GUI for 256 colors - and thus a lot of "old school" Mac OS7.x software won't work properly.
Any idea how to get Basilisk II to work properly without screen trash using 256 colors? I've tried changing the workbench screen to 256 colors and running Basilisk II in a window with no success.
Thanks!

i think it would be much easier for you to use usb sticks or hds to store your data than burn cds especially with such a weird methods. in its hayday cd/dvd wasnt a really dependable media and today it is just plain obsolete. |

Yes, it would be lots easier...but I have a ton of CD-R and DVD-R media that I bought cheap and they store in spools nicely - I like to put my digital pictures on them so I can toss them in the DVD player at home to do a slideshow, or send them to friends by mail. I figure - may as well use them up!

be careful, many my cds degraded after years beyond readibility, even if not used. the other question is how long other media last, strangely i think hds are still the most dependable. |

Trick: Insert the blank media in the DVD drive BEFORE you start the burning program.
Not sure how to change the drive in AmiDVD but MakeCD works with an external DVD writer .

| Hi all,
I have CDs that are over 25 years old that work fine...ah, back when I first got my Amiga CD ROM drive in 1986! Those were the days!

Can someone remind me how to get the registered version or free keyfile for MakeCD? I seem to recall some years ago it being made publicly available.... is that true?
I have discovered that FryingPan can be made to work with the usbdisk.device by adding the line:
/< Driver Harmful = "0" Name = "usbdisk.device" /> to the optical.prefs file and rebooting the amigaone. At first it didn't work but when I unchecked and rechecked writing the whole disk check box it works fine (thanks Tomasz!).
Now...one more question - the external USB disk drive I have normally uses two USB connectors to improve throughput. On the AmigaOne, when I plug in the "main" connector, the drive is recognized and I can write or read CDs and DVDs - but it is painfully slow 3X CD speed. When I plug in the second USB connector from the drive, the AmigaOne takes no notice - no new device seen and it doens;t seem to show up in the USB exchange commodity. Will this be supported by OS4? Is it supported already and I don't know how to activate it?
Thanks,

There is nothing to "activate" in the second plug This is something that is strictly forbidden by USB standards. It "improves" throughput of power, if the USB of a computer isnt able to deliver enough power by one plug only.
The speed issue you experienced is the "fault" of the USB system software, which currently supports USB1.1 only. As soon as 2.0 is supported (and your A1 is equipped with an USB 2.0 controller, that is), your drive will work much faster.

That site is still a big mess! How is anyone supposed you to know what to click to download it? In any case it still looks like they haven't made a final version you can download.
Who wants to download four archives and unpack them over them selves and deal with file write protected issues? This is exactly what I got when I manually built a MakeCD 3.2d archive for a friend.
I think I will upload it so we all can have a final clean version of MakeCD!
BTW either you missed it or I am not clear enough (like the MakeCD page ) but you set the device in AmiDVD's icon. Last edited by Hypex on 19-Dec-2010 at 11:34 PM.

Hmmm... very interesting. On my PC Windows XP netbook, if I only plug in the one USB connector, I have access to the DVD/CD drive but the access speed is incredibly slow. When I plug in the second USB plug, the I/O speed of the drive increases to its regular 24X! Apparently in the PC netbook world, this hack or cheat of the USB standards is pretty common.

Maybe you should ask Michael Boehmer (e3b, makers of Subway, Highway, Algor & Deneb USB solutions for 68k) about this. Hes an expert and could tell you more about your drive, and why it behaves like it does, in a much deeper way than I can.
All I know is, that no USB device should use two USB plugs in parallel. Never ever. But a lot do... |
