| As the title says: What's the max JXFS partition size? I thought it was 2TB.
I get disk full on a new 1.7TB partition where I try to copy things. Info says I have 3.6G-blocks free:
DIV: 1 761G 20 896 3 693 151 232 0% 0 Read/Write Diverse
That translates as a negativ number for bad programs, and the dos/Write() function apparently. _________________ - Don't get fooled by my avatar, I'm not like that (anymore, mostly... maybe only sometimes) > Amiga Classic and OS4 developer for OnyxSoft. |

I would avoid using JXFS if I were you, ppl have lost data & development for it has been dropped, use SFS or SFS/2.

Thanks you so much for that useful table! I have been partioning my 1TB SATA drive and am setting up partitions as either EXT\03 SFS\00 or SFS\02. I used 512 size for blocksize for all of them.
Thanks!

Yes programs needs to support the 64bit DOS API, Seek64, The Filesystem has have to support NSD64/TD64 hack. The Device driver also need to support the NSD64/TD64 patch.
So there are 3 possible points of failure.
IDOS->GetFilePosition() IDOS-> ChangeFilePosisition()
replaced the old command IDOS->Seek()
IDOS->ChangeFileSize()
replaced the old command SetFileSize()
Old programs will use the old functions and will fail, I do not know if Ansi C programs using the CLIB/NewLib falls back on right DOS.Library functions/methods.

I use for my start partition 2GB SFS/00 and for all others partitions the JXFS filesystem All works very well and fast with my SSD hardrive _________________ Amiga600/Vampire2/PrismaMegaMix |

Wow... SSD Hard drive on an X1000. That must be amazingly fast!
You have no issues with JXFS? It may be my old 160G drive, but alost all of my JXFS partitions end up with bad blocks and recursive links and other errors. I look forward to the new filesystem being developed....

It works very well. I installed my SSD drive at christmas. Since that it works with the JXFS filesystem. I have no problems with it and yes a SSD drive is very fast _________________ Amiga600/Vampire2/PrismaMegaMix |

Don't use JXFS, if you get one little error, even something like a checksum error on a block you will lose the entire partition, you CAN NOT mount the partition any longer so can't even copy good files off of it. At least SFS and FFS have recovery software. SFS2 doesn't.
Also remember that you are using an X1000... You ONLY have the SFS recovery software in the original SFS distribution on aminet as Partition Wizard DOES NOT WORK.
Be sensable, it's a small drive, use a 1mb FFS partition for amigaboot.of and uses SFS for for all others otherwise you WILL lose data. _________________ OS4 Rocks X1000 beta tester, Sam440 Flex (733)

This program only use a plain Write(), nothing else. And the first Write() to the parition returns the error 221 (disk full) and the file is 0 bytes, which is a bit wierd.
I did some tests, and it is not possible to write files larger than 60959 bytes. Trying to write more results in a disk full error. VERY wierd, and obviously a bad bug.
@Severin
I have used JXFS since it came out and I have not had any problems with it. Even got some sporadic errors from it, probably because of memory corruption during development. No data loss ever. The only file system that has ever given me any (substantial) data loss is FFS. And that has happened more than once.
Right now I have two JXFS partitions on my other disk; 120GB and 730GB. No problems with those. Last edited by Deniil715 on 09-Feb-2014 at 05:15 PM.

| I changed the partition size to 1.2TB - still fail. Changed again to 1000.003GB - success. Now copying data... 38GB so far.
I kind of don't believe SFS/2 is any better, and SFS/1 only supports parititons up to 120GB, so that I will be used for the smaller partitions that will never carry any big files. JXFS is the successor of SFS/2, no? _________________ - Don't get fooled by my avatar, I'm not like that (anymore, mostly... maybe only sometimes) > Amiga Classic and OS4 developer for OnyxSoft. |

No, SFS/2 was written after JXFS which according to Joerg is still beta and should not be used for 'important data' and should be regularly backed up. I will admit that JXFS 'seems stable' but any error will kill the partition, I have lost many partitions, mostly small test ones but one which I set up as a temporary place to move 600gb of data too and move off again. before I'd copied all the data too it I got a checksum error and lost the lot. _________________ OS4 Rocks X1000 beta tester, Sam440 Flex (733)

For me, JXFS worked great for several years, never an error. At some point though, I upped my IDE drive SFER speed to something like "D" in uboot. Since then I have gotten 4 or 5 partitions with JXFS errors, and yes, they are bad. Every time you read or write to the partition, no matter where, you get an error. I wonder if maybe for some reason JXFS is more sensitive to data loss when the drive xfer speed is marginal or something. Anyway, I've switched back to SFS\00 and SFS\02 (mostly 00) for now until OS4.2 or the new NTFS filesystem (I think that is what is being ported...).

This sounds strange to me.
Write has this arguments BPTR file, Const APTR Buffer, int32 Length.
The length is signed, not unsigned, so the max buffer length is (2^31)-1, anything more will be negative number, unless you did some thing really bad.
I think you will need split up write into 2 or more Write()'s, if you need to write more then 2Gbytes.
EDIT: Your going to be limited by Max memory under AmigaOS anyway, so Write() is not yet obsolete

So you're saying SFS/2 is safer? It also has no recovery tools. And it has an explicit limit of 1TB partitions. maybe JXFS is also limited to 1TB but noone has ever been able to test that?
What is true though is that the block count goes over 2GB when the partition is over 1TB and this could cause DOS to fail if it handles blocks using signed ints.
@NutsAboutAmiga
The write was only 512kB. I was using my well tested BackUp program. And then DOpus copy, and finally Annotate text editor to find the exact limit by saving larger and larger until it failed.
@sundown
It doesn't seem like a MTB problem. More like a filesystem, or DOS issue.
@all
Btw. I got a copy speed of 50.2MB/s when copying from one SATA connected JXFS partition to this new SATA connected JXFS partition. That is the highest speed I have ever seen on an Amiga. Still only about 40% of what each of the disks (which are SATA2 and SATA3) can do according to specs. And this was copying large files, movies and stuff.

I use an SFS/02 partition for a 1.4TB partition just fine... but for such large partitions you need to use block sizes larger than 512 bytes, which isn't officially supported (atleast not anymore).
P.S. If you want me to read/reply a post, then PM or email me otherwise I most likely won't see it!Last edited by ChrisH on 10-Feb-2014 at 10:26 AM.

Yes, and JXFS refuses to mount with anything else than 512. I guess this is a DOS limit then.
I wonder if 4k blocksize would be favorable on this disk, since it has that sector size internally. I'll try 4k block, SFS/2, 1.7TB and see what happens. _________________ - Don't get fooled by my avatar, I'm not like that (anymore, mostly... maybe only sometimes) > Amiga Classic and OS4 developer for OnyxSoft. |

No filesystem is safe but in amigaland the general rule is slowest is safest.
FFS2 while being very slow has more recovery info in each block and has the validate nightmare.
SFS is faster but does get errors but usually gives plenty of warning before it gets serious do you can backup / format / restore and there are recovery tools for it.
SFS/2 I don't know, I've not had a problem with it yet but as there are no recovery tools it could get tricky.
JXFS, yes it's fast, yes it dies, No recovery tools
NTFS, Slow but seems to be reliable, not fully integrated into the system yet though._________________ OS4 Rocks X1000 beta tester, Sam440 Flex (733)
