Seems like Hyperion is still making progress on SMP for AmigaOS

@Hondo

Thanks for link. I also revived old Hyperion blog update... thread.

Hyperion seems to have clear idea how to realise SMP in AmigaOS. If successful, it would be nearly a miracle.

@pavlor

I'm stupid.... I've got not a clue what they are saying...

Anyone care to try and explain it for anyone who doesnt know anything about CPU processes and forbids and so on ?

@Metalheart
SMP = faster multitasking on a system with a multicore CPU like the X1000.

Looks like legacy apps should run fine in this mode. Awesome! Nothing broken.

Does this mean that normal apps and os components WILL take advantage of multiple cores ?
And all CPU load is devided by the OS using all cores ?

For example Petunia running ImageFX or or DvPlayer will get faster as it is just because the OS lets it use more cores ?

Without modifying mentioned programs ?

@Metalheart,

It looks to me they are doing just that, re-tasking on the fly no matter what the program.

@Metalheart

On SMP system you can run eg. one application on one core and one on another - so you can run MORE applications at SAME full performance as ONE application on single core system. There are applications supporting multiple threads - eg. performance of Blender rendering scales with available CPU cores (dual core CPU renders 2x faster than single core - assuming cores in question are the same ).

I know how smp is supposed to work, but it seems that hyperion is going to do it different. As i outlined above.

But to much techiical talk to be sure.....

Hyperion points to obstacles in the way and how to overcome them, goal is still the same - SMP.

Definitely not. This is first time we see actual solution of known problems associated with SMP.

@wawa

There have been more development besides SMP development. AmigaOS FE just to mention one.

But SMP on amiga is a big thing just in it self, even though it is not done yet.

yes and no, existing tasks will be balanced on different cores, so this gives ImageFX more time on one core (assuming its single thread application).

I don't know about DvPlayer, but mplayer has a option to split up the decoding into several threads, this should be possible for a SMP system to schedule on different cores.
