i want to release a usable version. There are so many problems..
Now i'm using WPA. no overlay and so on. I have no DMA so i don't understand if the slowdown are caused by "software" or by no DMA.. i need the DMA!!! _________________ http://www.amigasoft.net |

Are you talking about IDE DMA? Cos if you are I can always test for you!
Cheers, Bean.

| @afxgroup:
With 'DMA' do you mean harddisk-controller accessing the memory with DMA?

Buy a Sil card, they are not too much and work really well. It'll save you trying to patch the motherboard.
Cheers, Bean.

| @afxgroup:
With low bitrate movie files, like the one in the screenshot which needs 81.7kByte/sec the IDE-interface should have near zero impact on performance on movie playback. The biggest bottleneck will without doubt be the decoding and the second runner up for biggest bottleneck will be rendering the decoded data on the screen.
I do not know the details of how well the A1's native IDE-interface and its drivers works when it isn't using DMA to transfer data to/from memory, instead relying on the cpu to transport the data to/from memory, thats the reason why I said "should have near zero impact". A normal cpu driven IDE-interface on a machine with atleast a cpu of 68020 class does not need many percent of the cputime to transport say the bitrate in this case - 81.7kByte/sec and the A1200 IDE-interface. What I am trying to say is that the A1 should theoretically get an almost unmesureable cpu load from reading data at that speed from the harddrive using the native IDE-interface, even without DMA.
Anyhow, just place a movie file on your ramdisk and play it from there and see if it makes a difference. I guarantee you that it doesn't have any DMA issues and you will have a hard time finding a faster disk ;=).
I suggest you add the option of direct rendering to vram using the lock/unlock functions in the CGX/P96 API for increased performance. If byteswapping is needed for big/little-endian conversion you should opt for assembler for those parts as the ppc has builtin instructions for swapping data.
(edit):
Here is a piece of code I wrote once to test the locking/unlocking functions of CyberGraphX which you can take a look at. I can't say that I am proud of it, but it works and should show you how to use it.
