| Hi all, I have the following problem:
When I try to copy cd using makecd: it always fails at random places (between 100MB and 400MB). It happens regardless if I'm taking the image or copying the cd from dvd drive to cdrw. I tried the image using both drives at various speeds (12, 20, maximum speed). the failure always indicated by drop of cpu usage from about 10% to ~0% and cold reset of A1 is required to make the failed drive available again. Sometimes moving makecd window during transfer brings grim reaper of input.device.
Makecd was working ok with a1ide.device and os4 update1, after installing si680 and upd2 (almost on the same day) I can't burn any cd to contain >100Mb
Edit: I even tried to image the copy of that cd prepare on other machine. /Edit
The hd seems to function ok (today transferred >4GB file over network using linux)
The configuration: A1g4xe, os4 upd2 registered makecd public beta 10 si680 card from st-lab cdrw+dvd on si680 primary and hd on secondary (didn't want to search for longer ide cable to make hd primary and others on secondary)
Any ideas are wellcome, TIA, Jack

You could try to put only the hd on the SiI and the DVD/CDRW on the a1ide (that's how I've done it) as the PIO mode of a1ide should be faster (= better implemented) then the one of the Sil.

As Serpi stated I also recommend fitting the HD to the si680 (primary here) and the CDRW & DVD on the VIA IDE. As UDMA is not available for ATAPI devices as yet this is the most logical setup.

| @sicky and serpi:
10X for the advice, I'll try it (and test the makecd again) Jack

[qiote] PIO mode of a1ide should be faster (= better implemented) then the one of the Sil. [/quote]
Hmm, dunno about faster, but it takes about 2:40 minutes to read 100Mb on a1ide while it was that means >15 min for the 700Mb cd. On si680 it was lot faster, about 1min to get 200Mb. I could write 700Mb cd in 6 minutes.
Looks like I tried to outsmart myself putting "idetool -x si680ide.device 1 66 >nil:" in s:startup-sequence for the times when DMA for atapi devices would be available. And the surprise of the transfer rates I got should have warned me, noone can read/write 700Mb in 6 minutes using PIO modes.
Now it's already over 450Mb in the image file and looks good so far.
Edit:
No more crashes so far, I can make images, burning is bit slow(as usual) but works ok.
10X for the help, Jack.
