OS4 GCC - please send me the source code

Those of you with OS4 SDK installed - presumably you also have the GCC source code and source code to all other GPL tools made available with the SDK. If the source code isn't included, you have the right to ask Hyperion for the source code, and you have the right to redistribute it to anyone else, you don't even need their permission, and they are not allowed to withhold it from you.

So, can someone kindly send me all the GPL tools from the OS4 SDK please?

@Mobileconnect

On the other hand, Hyperion is free to choose which way to distribute the sources and are allowed to charge a small amount to cover things like postage, CD etc. But otherwise you are right, not that I think all that many people have any use of the GCC sources, but anyway.

@All

Okey let's not make this into a fight over what the GPL says or not, nor into a Hyperion aren't following the GPL thread.

If the above happens anyway then this thread will be locked at some point.

So keep this about getting Mobileconnect the sources.

/Björn

@Mobileconnect

GCC CVS

It give instructions (for linux) on how to get gcc sources. I think only Hyperion could give links for the Amiga version.

Anyone who has received the GCC from Hyperion has the right to re-distribute it. That includes the Amiga version, because the Amiga specific changes are linked in to the generic version and therefore also subject to GPL.

Also, anyone who has received GCC but hasn't had the source is entitled to the source. and is entitled to redistribute it also.

I'm not interested in debating whether the GPL allows it or not. It does, and that's a fact, not something for debate. No one has to give it to me, but anyone who has it has the right to give it to me if they choose to.

@Mobileconnect

May I ask, why didn't you , instead of writing this rather suggestive posting, try to obtain the source code directly from us? Or have you been reading ANN lately and actually believe the stuff?

@Rogue

I don't read ANN, but I did ask you guys in the past, and you said you weren't ready. Well, I figured if you felt you weren't ready, then I'd ask someone else, who wouldn't need your permission. You might not think it's going to be of any use to me, but then as long as you or someone else who has a copy feels like sending me a copy, then it's not your business what I use it for.

The only reason the posting seems confrontational, which is not my intention, is because one has to pre-empt all the trolls who think they know GPL when they really don't. I certainly don't think Hyperion are in that category.

Hyperion are not in that category because I already have a copy of the source code. As a beta tester we have had access to it forever. It is free (as in freedom) and that is all that matters.

@ssolie

Since you have it, would you mind sending it to me then?

You don't have to, but since I've asked, perhaps you would?

I'm just interested that do you really need that code or are you just asking because you can ?

@miksuh

I'm interested too, what are you going to do with the code?

Really? Certainly not by email. What was it exactly that you where asking for?

Ahem, did I say anything in that respect? Why this agressiveness?

No, I won't be sending anyone the source because it isn't ready yet and you would just end up wasting your time. You may even consider it a favour because you don't have to worry about the bugs I found because they will be fixed before you get a copy.

If you would like to help, send a PM to Rogue and maybe you can help out with the effort to fix what is left of the bugs. That way you'll have access to the source code and you can contribute to moving the OS4 project forward.

Since I and over 100 other beta testers have the source code, that ends the troll invasion theory quite nicely I would say.

@mobileconnect

Take your request for the source code to PM (or email) with Rogue.

Next time you wish to ask for anything, then please ask the proper people that can actually provide you with the thing you ask for & I'd ask with less agression as you sounded like you were demanding.

@rest of thread

If you wish to discuss the ins and outs of the GPL I suggest you start another thread for this purpose.

This one has run its course and is now locked.

@Rogue

Orgin said "So keep this about getting Mobileconnect the sources." ;)

I know these confrontational scoundrels gets to you once in a while, but "send me a mail, and it will be on it´s way" would have taken care of it.

@Mobileconnect

Did you assume they didn´t wanna give the source to you?
If yes. Why?

Just send the publisher of your gcc a mail, and they will tell you how to obtain it.
If I understand gpl right, they have to, since they published it.

I might be wrong. Maybe a article/editorial about how gpl is supposed to be threated (according to the gpl) is an idea? I see no harm in educating us (talking about me, not mobileconnect necessarily) wannabe programmers about how this works.

Hyperion guys? Ole-Egil? Editors? Crash course in gpl and it´s pros and cons?

...Oh, maybe there is included some AmigaOS code in gcc? Then I can see why they hesitate (if they do) ;)

It´s summer goddammit. I´m off to drink a cold beer in the sun. I´ll decide if I:
1) Buy the dev-pre microA1 from italy now.
or
2) be drunk this summer because I didn´t.
