What are you talking about? The whole point is not that the -> is easier to protect, it's that you can have *one* library providing both an interface that is MP safe and one that is the old compatibility one and slowly phase out the old one without suddenly breaking compatibility or having two versions of the same library. Sure, there are other ways to do that but there's many ways to skin a cat and I don't see what the big issue is, it's not as if compilers do not know how to optimise calls of function pointers from structures, else C++ would be doomed.
