Yamaha XG - The Music Way I Want To Go Posted on 9-Oct-2005 18:45:21

| Seeing the way some of the Amiga members have gone with using OctaMED SoundStudio and a Yamaha XG sound card, i'm starting to see the potensial of going the same way, too
I have found my call The music i make on my AmigaOne with OctaMED SoundStudio somehow, will be based on Yamaha XG
This is mostly in the planning stage i have, but i have been thinking long about it, and this is the way i want to go...
My music genre will mostly be Soul, R&B, Modern instrumental Jazz, some Ambicient and Ballad. I don't have the voice of a singer, so if some at a little later date happens to find my music composition very interesting, then it should be possible to contact me, and we could agree on something..
But bear in mind, this is still on the planning stage Last edited by Helgis on 09-Oct-2005 at 06:49 PM.

I used to have the DB50XG card internally fitted to my 1200D (with a proper tap on the _RESET line from the trapdoor slot).
That got replaced with one of these.
I find SoundStudio and XG fit together very nicely indeed. Provided you dont mind messing with sysex messages occasionally, you have full control over your instrument.
As for singing, I don't write lyrical music. At best I'll use a few samples _________________ Doing stupid things for fun... |

Unbeatable by any other 15-year-old system, beatable by any system with a new soundcard, midi ports and a hardware synth. _________________

What we actually need for OS4/MOS is a decent soft synth, preferably midi triggered without too much latency. Is anybody working on something of this nature? _________________ Doing stupid things for fun... |

I believe there was a Yamaha XG MIDI Soft Synth program available for the PC that was working very well. Would be great to see that on the OS4 on A1, too |

Yamaha-XG doesn't establish "realistic sound" per se. What XG does is to provide an enhancement over the GM set, establishing a minum combination of about 480 voices (compared to GM's 128), several drum kits and an effects transport bus (digital filters, reverb, chorus, variation, insert and eq). This is a substantial baseline functionality improvement over GM.
Typically yamaha instruments sound good because the AWM2 technology (which is a combination of wavetable and filter) they use for their reproduction is very nice, but that predates XG itself. There are many other types of hardware that offer just as nice a sound. There are also better synthesis techniques. If you like how AWM2 sounds, you'll die if you hear the Virtual Accoustic voices on the rack. Think of the sonic equivalent of raytracing and that is how they work (physically modelling real instrument properties).

Yes, you're of course right. I guess that's why a mixture of XG and todays' sample technology makes it very interesting
But i love music been made with Yamaha XG

That isn't quite what I had in mind, to be honest. I was imagining something more like FM7 ot VST, where you actually have a simulation of a synthesizer, rather than trying to reproduce real instrument sounds _________________ Doing stupid things for fun... |

A more powerful SoftSynth in other words. I see
I do agree with you, however Last edited by Helgis on 09-Oct-2005 at 07:08 PM.

Unbeatable ? My ESI Juli@ with midi and my new Virus TI Polar will beat your stuff in horselength. Yours 64 tones poly with mine 80 :p And 2x16 reverb/delay effects (like having 16x2 single). However i dont know much about the synthesizer your buying and i do techno/trance so i cant say much but as you say unbeatable i just had to react.
And as you ask for software synths i can say hdrec has one called sweeper. And some others are in work. But for all this we need JIT for os4 or simply a win machine with UAE and JIT enabled. As pc's are fast and many users do use UAE this is i nice program. Would be nice to see how fast it will be under os4 with jit.
And Helgis, sure you are our new micheal jackson. You can do an theme tune for os4 too :) That would be nice. A acidjazzy tune Last edited by Kicko on 09-Oct-2005 at 07:21 PM.

I'm getting the TerraTec Aureon 7.1 Space soundcard in November. I'm convinced that this produces the best audio quality of all the soundcards that were tested in the summary DaveAE posted a while back..
I'll also search for the small MIDI-box Yamaha MU1000XG, i think the name was
When OS4 Final is ready, things will become easier
