| Folks,
I'm sure I'll be cursed by announcing this early, but you all deserve as much good news as can be, so I wanted to tell you all that my port of Python 2.3.2 is coming along. I have a clean build now that runs on GeekGadgets. I will move to 2.3.3, then integrate the AmigaPython features and remove the GG dependencies and hopefully have something within a couple of weeks. _________________

That would be great wouldn't it? Problem is, I don't have OS4. But I'm using GCC this time, not SAS/C so hopefully someone can make it work. _________________

| Update: 2.3.3 is now built - still need to run the test suite, integrate AmigaPython changes and test. _________________

Heh! it's a scripting language like AREXX. But with the big diffrence of being platform independent.

Fleecy Moss already mentioned something about Python in his November 9'th 2003 Q & A session #23:
1) Amighista: Is Python to be included in the upcoming OS4.0 release? If yes, which version? Will it include a GUI binding (like wxPython, PyGTK or Python for QT)? Who's the person in charge for the porting?
Fleecy: Python is being considered as the cross platform scripting language for AmigaOS4. It is still too early to talk about the project as AmigaOS4.0 itself is the priority at the moment but progress is being made in determining how to create a version that will integrate well with and make use of all the new features of AmigaOS4. Important issues to consider include the GUI and how best to implement the concept of the "ARexx port".
So, it looks like Python just might be putting the big squeeze on Sheep!

Mr Moss also told [during Alt.Woa 2001, Huddersfield, UK] that AmigaOne and AmigaOS4 would be out two years ago and... ahem

To the best of my knowledge no-one at Hyperion/Amiga is looking at it for OS4 yet. They're welcome to contact me if that's not the case.
I have almost got a build of 2.3.3 with Irmen de Jong's AmigaPython changes integrated now. Just a bit of trouble with the AmiTCP support at the moment. This is with SAS/C now, since that is what Irmen used for AmigaPython 2.0. I might look at GCC support with the AmigaPython add-ons, but they weren't written with that in mind, and anyway I won't do that until I've got it working with SAS/C first. Sas/c compiles faster and produces smaller code than GCC. Also, I don't want to spend time making it work with the GG GCC when things will have changed for the OS4 GCC. Again, they're welcome to send their GCC tools to me if they want it done.
FYI, Irmen's AmigaPython includes full workbench, AmiTCP and ARexx integration. Only thing it doesn't have is the GUI tools, but that's because Python GUI's use Tk, which only runs on Amiga in X11.
Or I might just release the GeekGadgets port separately and let you all choose.
Anyway, that's all academic until I've got it working enough for a beta release.
And after that..? I was thinking Perl. To date there's only been a GG version.
Finally, if anyone wants INET225 support please mail me. I won't bother to do it unless I get requests. (* Disclaimer I love Inet225 and wish it had been used instead in 3.5/3.9, and only in Genesis on OS3.9 does AmiTCP finally have something almost equivalent, but now that there is, I can no longer justify supporting socket.library as hardly any applications use it.) _________________

This is correct. The idea to use Python in future OS versions instead of AREXX was just that - an idea, albeit a very specific idea I am very much in favour of because I like the Python language.
For the time being we're still using AREXX. The idea is that the next OS release should build upon a language-agnostic scripting host, so that basically any language can be used for scripting an application. How this interface will look like is still being discussed.
I can't of course speak for the company, but I would be very interested in seeing Python being ported to OS 4 _________________ Seriously, if you want to contact me do not bother sending me a PM here. Write me a mail |
