AmiGBG ROAD TRIP !!!!!

Hi folks, I woke up this morning with a really weird, and possibly stupid idea !

Thinking of getting to the Sweden Amiga Event, I have worked out that I COULD drive there.

OK it's one hell of a drive, but sometimes you have to do these things "Just to be different" which is the Amiga way is it not ?

Anyways, if anyone else in the UK thinks this is a good idea, and would is nuts enough to want join me on this trip, (possibly share driving if you are able, but not essential) Please let me know ASAP, there will be things to arrange and plan, holidays from work, passports etc.

We would probably end up "roughing it" and getting our heads down wherever convenient, so this is not a trip for the faint hearted !

This could be a cheap way of getting to the event for anyone who would otherwise not have been able to make it.

If you're up for it, let me know !

@AmigaOneProductions

To avoid mishaps on the way.
This side of the channel we drive on the right hand side of the road.
Ok.

Have a safe trip.
See you there.

@AmigaOneProductions

I can just see it now "Strains Sprains and Automobiles"

Tell you what, if you do go ahead with it I would be very interested in an article for Total Amiga magazine. Pictures and a "rough guide" report from the "roving reporter"............ so how about it?

MAN!!! If its anything like our (Taffy 'gans) trip to Peterbourogh your in for a laugh.... just bring a spare clutch. I'd be well up for doing it! But Im skint at the moment.. something to do with buying £24 worth of MicroA1 raffle tickets....

Nah - I would be up for it, but I can see the trip costing a couple of hundred.. but it does appeal to my "bugger it" sense of responsibility.... Im tempted... very very tempted... hmmmm.... be good for the amigans site as well. Bung IanS in the boot - that way he can come... hmmmm...... aye...

Hmmmm... and I have a full clean drivers licence....

Hmmm......

I'm thinking about it

@AmigaOneProductions

How long are you planning that the trip should take, do you have time for some side tracking?

Just asking because it'll be easier for me to give advice on where to stop and what to see here in sweden. (if you want it that is)

A man after my own heart!

In my younger days I used to really enjoy doing things like this, phone my mate and just grab a few bits and bugger off to Blackpool all on the spur of a friday evening. Kip in the car, spend the weekend then go home sunday night.

I would really recommend you get at least 1 person who can share the driving though, bit much for one person.

Best of luck on your trip, I'll see you there!

(I'm getting the plane btw!)

@Eric_S

So far, the plan is (of course subject to change as finer details are worked out !)

Set off from UK early Wednesday, route to be finalised, MS Autoroute suggests a route though France, then to head in a North East direction, there may be a better route than this, some of it depends on who and where I have to pick people up from on the way.

Autoroute reckons it will take 2 1/2 days each way, but with some driver sharing, that could be reduced considerably, also a shorter route may be possible

The event is on Saturday, so we can either set off after the show, or more likely stay over Sat night before setting off for home, (No doubt we would need Sat night to sober up after the copious consumption of alcohol we will no doubt partake in )

@AmigaOneProductions

Well there is a ferry from Gothenburg (via Norway) to Newcastle (and vice versa).
If i were you i should contact dfdsseaways (www.dfdsseaway.co.uk ) and ask for priceinformation. From what I reckon theye even got tax-free-shopping
Just sit back and have a pint while you and your car gets there...
(Hmm..should stop now before I start sounding too much of an advertiser (havenṫ even travelled with them)).

That's if the drive wasn't half your fun.

@Ohlson-san

Thanks for that, yes, that is one of the options I have just been looking at, I recaculated the route in Autoroute, and that's what it came up with, I'll try to find out costs and times later today.

Im interested!

Though I dunno if I can afford it. I know when I was busy working out pricing for just myself to get to the show it came to way over £300...

Let me know if you get an idea of costing and I'll see how far my non existant savings can go

No need for that cause it's simple:

It's £62 for the car (unless it's some sort of RV).......

The economy 4 berth accomodation is included in the price/person......

And the offseason price/person is £24 for an adult.

The ferry lies to right here in the middle of Gothenburg on the same side of the river that the show goes.

Maybe a couple of km.

@Ryu

Costs:

From what I have worked out so far, the costs to be worked out:

Fuel : UK bought fuel is paid for by by the company I work for as part of my salary, so no probs there, Looking at the foreign part of the journey, I reckon on less than £80 for the whole trip, so no probs there.

Ferry: I'm looking at the cost of taking the car by ferry from Newcastle, I will try to get an answer on this before the end of today.

Stop overs. Will will need to stop over somewhere along the way, if we all share a B&B somewhere, costs will be kept down.

Entrance Fee to the event

Food and Booze while we are away.

I'll try and calculate the costs more accurately later today but I'll cover the Fuel and ferry costs, we can share the costs of staying over somewhere, so I don't think the trip need be that expensive.

Remelons is also up in Newcastle - so give the marra a PM.

As for me it looks unlikely that I will be allowed Wedsneday, Thurs and Friday off... I may be able to blag the Friday.. but it looks doubtfull... But I've steam rolled through all these reports and have now cleared the backlog - what I was originally hired for... so If I go so fast as to be ahead of schedule - they may allow me the time off working on the principle that there will be no work for me to do...

Of course, I could always quit my Job to go though...

@Steff

Sounds good to me, so If I've got this right, the total costs for the whole trip:

£62 + (4 people x£ 24) = £158 (So far two other people other than myself have expressed an interest, but I'm calculating as if there was another person)

Multiply that by 2 (The trip home again ) comes to £316

Yeah, that sounds do-able

If the ferry takes us close to the event, my petrol costs are going to be just about nothing, (If I leave the UK with a full tank, and not have to fill up again until I get back to the UK, it will cost nothing)

So far so good !

@AmigaOneProductions

wouldnt we need 2 nights in Gothenberg? If we went the ferry route we'd arrive in Gothenberg Saturday night, assuming we left on the friday afternoon ferry...
The gigs on Sunday, so we'd need to stay over on sunday too, and travel back monday afternoon arriving back in the UK on tuesday evening?

Sounds good, I hadn't spotted that it was Sunday, not Saturday, but yes, a couple of days stay over seems to be right going by that route, I have requested holidays from Wednesday onwards of the week before, and the whole of the week after that (Friday after the event and the following Monday are Bank holidays, so I only have to book off until Thusday

So - is the monday after the show (next day) a bank holiday. If this is the case it could change things....

I could probably meet you in newcastle on the Friday... I have some credit to use with easyjet but its not enough to fly me abroad - but will get me from bristol to newcastle.
Hmmmm...

I can then take the Friday off - fly up late on Thursday night after work. Travel over with you marra's and then take the monday - as if its a bank hol....
