| Hi!
I need a new phone. Any recommendations..?
On one hand I like a slim normal *fast* phone with good buttons, like perhaps Nokia 6700.
On the other hand I'd like something that could fill my need for a laptop while travelling than has a qwerty keyboard and stuff, like the Nokia N900.
What do you think?
The N900 is cool because it runs Linux and seemed very fast and responsive the little I tried. But on the other hand it is very big, nothing I can have in my pocket all day and especially not all night when out to party or whatever... Really can't choose here. Mostly can't choose the *type* of phone rather than model. Last edited by Deniil715 on 18-Feb-2010 at 09:34 PM.

What about Motorola Droid/Milestone(name depends on country...) It uses Android2.0 have multitouch in europe version and have a nice and usefull slide qwerty keyboard... The price however wasnt so low... I like that phone very much...but atm I'm really happy with my Motorola A1200 and wait for a serious price drop(I hope in the next 1,5/2 years)... _________________ Simone"Tuxedo"Monsignori, Perugia, ITALY. |

Anybody have the model information for this one??
Or you could wait for the iPhone 4G. It blows the iPad out of the water.

I was quite disappointed by the Pre. Palm had a great chance to produce an "iPhone killer" but you only really get to make a first impression once and on release the software was so horribly sluggish... _________________

| The iPhone 3GS is what you need.
Since I bought it I my life changed. Suddenly I'm available everywhere and I can use real e-mail in my phone.
The Sony Ericsson crap I've had before sucked when it came to mail. |

I recently got the ANDROID HTC Tattoo, SIM free, from Play.COM £220.
It's pretty good. No real keyboard but the touch qwerty is pretty good.
Android is great! I'm just waiting for MAME and UAE! |

Didn't consider that one, perhaps I could think about it...
Just read about the Milestone but it lacks GPS and Flash which puts it down.
Perhaps I should have mentioned the two things I require:
1. Speed! I absolutely hate sluggish phones. Therefore the Pre. Palm seems to be out of the question, and also anything with Windows Mobile I've read (which I will happily be without anyway!)
2. GPS. I wish for a GPS so why by a phone without it and then having to buy a separate GPS later on when half the phone do have GPS..?!
3. WLAN to actually be able to use it without emptying my wallet...
For some reason I'm skeptical about the iPhones. Maybe they are plagued with DRM making it impossible to interface with the Amiga to download music..? Don't know but I have a feeling this might be the case. But otherwise I'm sure they are good.Last edited by Deniil715 on 07-Feb-2010 at 11:01 AM.

mmm... To me Milestone semms to have integrated GPS and in EU version also a full free navigation system instead of the GoogleNav that was present in USA version... Also multitouch was added for EU version...
I attach that nice video:
http://www.youtube.com/v/r9YGvLHvUxQ You can see how it was fast and responsive...
That's a USA review.
Hope that helps. _________________ Simone"Tuxedo"Monsignori, Perugia, ITALY. |

| @Deniil715 I tried a couple of smartphones, but found them slow and frustrating, touch screens phone are rubbish in bright sunlight. Sold them and went for a normal Sony Ericsson W715. Its a slide phone with a couple of nice extras like wi-fi and gps.
Edit, I use Opera Mini and GMail app all the time on this phone so does everything I need.

| A Androidphone, perhaps HTC Hero?
Stay away from IPhone as they don't have multitasking and you have to use pos itunes.
You can't even select an mp3 on the iphone to use as a ringtune, it must be done using itunes.. Last edited by fryguy on 07-Feb-2010 at 01:51 PM.

Hi,
I was in the mobile business some time ago.
According to what you say, you want a smartphone.
The platforms you have: - iPhone - WindowsMobile - Symbian (s60/UIQ) - Android - Palm WebOS - RIM OS - other linuxes (JUIX or stuff like that).
If you want to again gain Amiga sould, get a supported S60v3 Nokia mobile so you can run UAE4All. Also there's PocketUAE for Windows Mobile Professional (so touch-screen only). But you really have to check supported models.
Out of the list above, what only counts to me is iPhone, Symbian Nokia and Blackberry. I don't know WebOS though, I know only PalmOS.
If you wish to have a qwerty keyboard, then you should check out Blackberries, plus Nokia Eseries. Then you go: E71, E72, E63, E75, also E90 communicator. Also E55 with compact qwerty is nice.
My best factor would be E75, if you looked fot similar WindowsMobile devices, check out HTC Vox or its descendents.
Anyway I'm not really happy with my E75, that's why I'll get myself blackberry in a month.
About the features, well, whatever suits you, to me must-haves are WiFi, QWERTY, Open Operating System, mp3 Player, radio possibly too, also large screen (all above are QVGA or above so ok) and Adobe Reader. I don't need MMS, GPS or other stuff. All cell phones have mail client now, alas e.g. one is broken in my E75 so I use web access.
That's my suggestions - the answers to 'I need a qwerty smartphone' call. _________________ Amiga 1200 + WARP 1260 + AmigaOS 3.2 |

| I've got a Nokia N900, I'm very happy with it (now that I learned how to tweak the settings to extend the battery life). In terms of functionality I don't think there is a better phone on the market today, HTC make some nice phones too but I don't fancy putting up with WinMo or Android. Maemo has the potential to be the best mobile OS out there, it's got a few rough edges at the moment but the experience I've had with Maemo on the N900 has been positive overall. |

honestly I have an iPhone 3G and it's great! I have always been a PalmOS guy since the late 80's but when my Treo680 mrecently fell and broke..I carefully looked mat all my option and the iPhone serves all my purposes flawlessly...this was hard for me to say at first as I have always been anit Apple ..period!..but the iPhone simply was/is the best smart phone for me so I bought it...period _________________ ____________________________ c64-2sids, A1000, A1200T-060@50(finally working!),A4000-CSMKIII ! | I've got the Samsung i8910 HD, a really powerful pecies of tech, great screen, 3.7" OLED! biggest problem is it lack of support its got with apps and updates. plus I can run UAE4ALL on it but its not touch screen compatablie! sucks, but then again ScummVM works great on it and the browers with flash support is pritty darn cool. has GPS as well and a 8mp cam that can capture HD! on a phone is pritty amazing. all in all its a great phone, I kind of wish I maybe got an iPhone, but then at the time they could'nt capture video, and their no way of expanding the memory and a Pay as you go edition cost £700!. These Three things that put me off. So I understand the slight issue you have with the iphone/apple.

Interesting reading. I've actually looked a bit at the E75 before I saw your post. Seems like a nice compromise between a standard phone with normal keys and a smartphone with qwerty. But why aren't you happy with it?
I can't say I care too much about the OS as long as it isn't winsuck or slow, but and open OS is always a good thing, as long as it isn't slow.
So what I basically want is a fast and snappy phone which is really slim and small with a large screen and large 123+qwerty keyboard with long battery time and GPS+WLAN. Unfortunately that's not possible in a 3-d universe, but the E75 sounds like a good compromise, as long as it isn't slow _________________ - Don't get fooled by my avatar, I'm not like that (anymore, mostly... maybe only sometimes) > Amiga Classic and OS4 developer for OnyxSoft. |
