Anyone here who has used Ubiquiti 700 or 900 Mhz Wifi products?

Those frequency bands are not free in Europe, so anyone in the USA who has tried them?

900Mhz is the same frequency as old cordless telephones and most wireless headphones. Several years ago I had to take back a set of wireless headphones because I was picking up the conversations of the old lady next door on her ancient cordless telephone. It could be a bad set of frequencies for WiFi in the U.S. I think.

Because of my Telecoms protocol SW background I should be cursed to not to develop Telecom protocols also on Amigas...
But now when protocols are not by day job, I one day get into hobbytelecoms...

(again... communityHW ... grazy idea ... to have a community (/Amiga) card that can be set up to RX&TX any wifi data. Then we would not need to reverse engineer drivers but develop the L1...L3 layers of protocol SW... Could be also a nice affordable DAQ card that is not controlled by multibilliondollarcompanies.)

Well, I know Wifi and wireless, but not this particular gear from Ubiquiti.

So looking for first hand reviews of Ubiquiti (or others), what comes to long range Wifi, and also if you have experience with omni directional antennas, especially if mounted on a car, which model is good or bad etcetera.

I've some experience with that, but it won't help you. I've build home-made Linux-based WiFi router that's backed up by 3G/HDSPA and we're using it on long trips/when we're in the wilderness of Poland to get our Internet addiction going.

When I was working at ISP we've used some profi, long-distance antennas, I can ask for details if you'd like.

Yes, if you got any tips for good antenna that can do GSM/Edge/3G/4G , and is omnidirectional and car mountable, and also Wifi antennas, the idea is that a car can park outside any building, and manage to do Wifi into the building.
I am not sure this is doable with 2.4 or 5 Ghz bands, that is why I am also looking at 900 and 700 mhz.

Do you know which countries allow 600mW output power? AFAIK, in most European countries only 100mW are permitted.

Sounds like you're looking to go wardriving. >.< If that is the case 900 Mhz won't help 90% of the time. 900 Mhz is typically only used by wisps. The common equipment is in the 2.4Ghz range.

That being said when I last did a multihouse wireless network I used this on the base.


and from there I used some homemade directional antennas out of old DBS dishes.

ASUS makes a decent DDWRT compatible router also. This plus a cheap wireless bridge made for a decent client access point. :)

Not wardriving exactly, since it is for portable equipment from the car, that is to be brought inside a building, and supposed to keep in touch with the cars wlan.
Therefore any waveband can work, for a point to point Wifi.

Using odd 900 Mhz or 700 Mhz equipment, has the advantage of being less crowded, GSM mostly for 900 mhz, and Digital TV on 700 Mhz here, would need a radio license permit for that though, but not impossible to get one.

How big area you have to cover? I wouldn't use single omni directional antenna since you can get MUCH better coverage by using meshing since If you need get that WLAN to more than one room and if you can't park right next to it you are pretty much f*cked if you use legal trasmiting powers. Check Aruba networks. They make some pretty neat mesh gear and if you are familiar with IOS you will be familiar with managing them.

Not too big area. From outside different buildings into the buildings.
The antenna needs to be omni directional, due to several reasons, of which one is that the user does not need to care about directions at all, only give a little thought on where the car is parked.

Regarding transmitting powers, this must be done within legal limits, hope to the a permit to use the Ubiquiti 700 Mhz stuff, with a good antenna, and bridged connections, it should work for most of the buldings.
