What do you make of the new Apple Mac Pro?
New Mac Pro Engadget
Spiceworks - Mac Pro with front/back/size comparison pics

A polished cyclinder rather than a chunky cheese grater and the return of a handle built into the top!

Sure it's ridiculously powerful (and probably expensive too) but does its sealed and non-upgradeable nature mean it has failed its design brief before it has even gone on sale. What happened to a Blu-Ray burner built in? Will this not lead to a messy desk full of external Thunderbolt devices?

@BigD
it is all in the cloud. Or your phone, or your tablet. i can carry all my movies in my pocket... what do I need a big disk?
and there is always tpb and kinox.to....

No need for Blu-Ray. Sure some people have no access to fast Internet but to be honest those people won't buy a Mac Pro in any shape (at least a new one).

In a not too fare future everyone will have cheap and fast Internet and the market is already big enough to skip those who moan about a missing drive.

I like the Mac pro.

@BigD

Looks good, but without plenty of PCIe slots it is not Pro.

Although it's probably going to cost as much (possibly more) as an A1X1K, it won't run OS4.1 but you could run AROS on it.

@Plexus

This is the General Technology forum (I assume that's a rhetorical question)

@BigD

Not sure what to make of it. Fair play to them for doing something more than another aluminium box I suppose, even if it looks like Darth Vader's wastepaper bin.

It's the best and worst of Apple in one. It's more locked down and un-expandable, but it shows some tremendous engineering and design. It's difficult to replace the G5/Mac Pro design because it's a classic that's never really aged but I'm glad they haven't totally forgotten their pro customers.

So you think a client is going to want their wedding video, new top secret commercial or new first copy of their album uploaded to the cloud with all its inherent security risks rather than having it on a DVD/Blu-Ray disc? What about small scale groups wanting to distribute their recordings of the local pantomime, talent show etc. Do you expect all of this to be monitised or safely distributed/stored on the cloud etc? YouTube has its place but so does professional video editing and sound production.

@BigD

That's almost exactly what was said about the missing floppy drive from the 1998 iMac.

Vaders Helmet would be a cooler looking case...

or they could finally break through all limits and make it look like a water closet all along with a flush handle.

First thing that sprung to my mind was: It's the iCan!

Then I thought: Once again the Amiga was supposed to be way ahead in time with the Walker case (often referred to as the vacuum-cleaner) as Apple just invented the trash-bin where Amiga already visioned the hoover.

While the inner values are pretty neat, I don't like the case on first sight. Maybe in rl it looks better. And the lack of drives - not professional. Rather consumer level.
Best thing to do with Apple hw is installing a proper OS on that - and that OS doesn't have fruit as logo.

The DVD/Blu-Ray is a lot more versatile than the humble floppy. I don't see that dangling external bits and bobs off the thunderbolt port is progress. Yeah the box looks glossy and pretty but when you actually plug in all the items you would need to make it a functional work station it will look like a horrible 'Daddy longlegs' machine.

I wasn't impressed with the original iMac with its underpowered CPU and horrible puck mouse. It was a lesson in style over substance and the power of Apple/Jobs marketing strategy. This is more of the same, destroying the upgradeable 'tower' form factor. The 'tower' form factor needed tweaking not overhauling in this consumer electronics manner. I have no desire to upgrade my OS beyond OS X 10.6 since it has become pointless bloat beyond that point and I do not like the way the Mac line is converging with the consumer electronic focused iOS range. The Mac Pro does not pander enough to power users in my view. Dangling external devices can be tolerated in a laptop model but not a 'tower' model.

The humble floppy was a horribly outdated media by 1998 standards. You didn't need to be a visionary to see that.

I think it looks a whole lot better without the case on but I guess it would just end up a dust magnet without the 'waste paper bin' on top.

Thermal Core is incredible. Loving it.
I just hope gfx are upgradable as ram and SSD.

@BigD

Still waiting for Finder to get fixed, but seems Apple won't fix it.
Oh well, guess breaking something that worked fine during 10 years is called innovation by Apple marketing.
Anyway, this is regarding the keychain bug which makes Finder to fail when connecting to smb-shares.
Works just fine using muCommader or other third part filemanagers, but not with the built in one.
