Trouble With Getting Wireless Connection

Hi all,

I wanted to know if it is possible to get a wired connection straight from a Virgin cable box?

My router and modem are upstairs but the cable box is downstairs and it has an ethernet port so wondered if it was possible to run an ethernet cable from the box to my Sam440.

I realise that this is not the preffered way to get online but wireless is not an option for me at this time.

Another option could be to have my laptop with a wireless connection then run an ethernet cable from my laptop to my Sam440 but not sure how to set up sharing to do this.

All help greatfully accepted.

Well, do you have internet through your Virgin cable box and through your modem? Because unless you have an internet account with Virgin, that ethernet port won't do you much good I'm afraid...

Setting up the laptop to act as a gateway isn't too difficult, but if you're thinking of going that route, why not get a wireless bridge like this one:

http://www.itreviews.co.uk/hardware/h917.htm

They can be got much cheaper than that if you shop around too... The SAM will think it's on a wired network, and you can set the settings of the adaptor via its web interface... And it'll support WPA and all that jazz...

If it is a modem/router with internet access then it should work fine.
And ethernet is infact the preffered way to connect to the internet. Wireless is less secure, more unstable and has lower performance and speed. The only logical reason for using wireless is only if you cant handle having physical cables.

@Tomas

I've come to the conclusion that my only option is to move the router/modem downstairs so to get a wired connection.

I do have a Wireless NETPCI card but it doesn't fit in my slim Sam case so would have to rehouse my Sam to fit the card.

An other option is to use home plug. TP-LINK TL-PA101 85MBPS POWERLINE ETHERNET ADAPTER
cost 32 euro per unit here in Greece though...

@Daedalus

I know this is an old thread but do you know of anything similar that can be powered via USB.

I am still using a wired connection but now with a virginmedia superhub allowing 30mbps (not lightening speeds but good enough).

Are there any wireless boxes like http://www.itreviews.co.uk/hardware/h917.htm that have been tested on A1, Peg, Sam440, X1000 or other AmigaOS compatible hardware?

Wireless is the Holy Grail for me at the moment as we have just got 3 kittens and they are chewing everything including my ethernet cable.

I used to use a Netgear 608, but recently changed to this on my Sam 440. It runs off a standard USB lead for power and was a doddle to set up.
