Has anyone else had trouble connecting to the internet through their DSL ethernet modems since upgrading to the third prerelease update?
For some reason, I was able to connect just fine before, but after making this most recent upgade, I can no longer get on-line. This is the report I get:

[2005-06-15 00:58:11] Dialer 50.15 (20.9.2004)
[2005-06-15 00:58:22] Entering ethernet configuration mode.
[2005-06-15 00:59:15] Could not open eth3com.device, unit 0. Error -1.
[2005-06-15 00:59:18] Opened eth3com.device, unit 0.
[2005-06-15 00:59:18] S2_DEVICEQUERY returned 1 (Ethernet).
[2005-06-15 01:02:41] Connection attempt has timed out.
[2005-06-15 01:02:42] Connection attempt failed
[2005-06-15 01:02:42] (Resource allocation failure, Transmission failed - too many retries)
[2005-06-15 01:03:24] Connection attempt has timed out.
[2005-06-15 01:03:24] Connection attempt failed
[2005-06-15 01:03:24] (Resource allocation failure, Transmission failed - too many retries)

Any idea?

@PEB

As I mentioned in a couple of old threads, I've had this problem forever and I was hoping this update would fix it (it was my most wanted feature)

I think that now it's the right time to give out the full details (especially for AOS developers, of course).

ABOUT CONNECTING

As said, connecting does not always succeed: it's not rare that I have to try 4 times or more (getting the messages PEB showed in his post). And some times it's almost impossible. On average, I'd say that I have to try twice.
I must say that this problem seems to be mitigated by update #3 (I can't tell for sure because I haven't tested it much yet).

Normally, I activate the connection by means of a key-press, which is set up by the line shown below (included in an ARexx script that is located in WBStartup):

KEYBOARD ADD NAME gol KEY "F4" CMD "'ADDRESS COMMAND ''C:WBRun SYS:Internet/Connections/DNA.conn''"

I have discovered that this is less likely to succeed than doing this from a shell:

Run >NIL: SYS:Internet/Dialer MODE=open CONFIGFILE=SYS:Internet/Connections/DNA.conn

(note: without Run, chances seem to lessen).

ABOUT DROP-OUTS

The worst thing is that I keep having sudden and unpredictable drop-outs (which force me to reconnect all the time, thus making the previous problem even worse).
These drop-outs can happen both when the connection is totally idle and during data transfers. The uptime varies greatly: it can be anything from a couple of seconds to hours (generally, it is around 10 minutes or so).

Sometimes, after a drop-out, it's impossible to reconnect as I'm immediately told "Resource allocation failure, Transmission failed - too many retries" (normally that message appears only when the connection could not be established within the given timeout).
Prior to this update, an Avail FLUSH allowed, most of the times, other connection attempts (especially after updates #1 and #2); now, Avail itself crashes.
This is the crash log:

If I repeat the Avail FLUSH after the one that has crashed, the command works just fine. Only that this is of no help because trying to reconnect produces yet another crash (with update #3 only), this time by RAMLIB that tries to access the eth3com.device (I guess in a non-sane state), whose crash log is:

***

GENERAL NOTES AND TECHNICAL DETAILS

It's interesting how during nighttime neither problem happens frequently (at times never at all!): this seems to indicate that a factor could be external network traffic (seems strange, but what else could be?).

I live in a VDSL area and I have a VDSL modem (Cisco 575 LRE), but my actual connection is only a 1024/512 kbps ADSL.

My machine is an A1XE (MPC7550 @ 800 MHz), with 256 Mb RAM and a Silicon 680 card (so, no, it's not an issue with the fact that my board is not fixed).
With the same machine, I have no trouble whatsoever connecting from the Linux side.

This is my connection configuration:

# PROGDIR:Connections/DNA.conn
# File generated by Dialer 50.14 (18.9.2004)
# On Monday, 16-May-05 at 19:38:52
interface="PPPoE"
device="eth3com.device"
pppoe=yes
connecttimeout=5
sendid=off
login=""
password=""
provider="DNA"
hidewindow="connect"
animations=off

I have tried many, many different configurations (also using the same values as in Linux), but they gave always the same results.

Finally - yes - my startup-sequence has always hosted the line:

Run >NIL: C:AddNetInterface DEVS:NetInterfaces/PPPoE >NIL:

I hope this may help me and fixing network problems for the final release of AOS4 (which, BTW, just rocks, especially with the speedup of graphics of this update ).

I never had any ethernet problem. I use ADSL and i'm behind a router. Out of curiosity, have you tried to use a router? Only to know if the problems happens again.

At work i see several times a lot of weird problems. Very diffucult to understand what is the cause.

Connection drop after a while on 2 pcs. One was the cable, working for some time and then not. One was teh ethernet plug. very weird because after a reboot the connection was active again most of the times. We tries to investigate the thing further after i reistalling this crap WinXp and the problem was still here.

@ikir

the router is different from a modem. Because it has the logic inside it and you see it like a network card. Nothing else. With a modem is different.

@ikir

I don't think it's a HW problem otherwise I'd suffer the same problems also on Linux. Maybe the Linux drivers are a bit smarter and are able to re-connect when the connection drops unsolicitedly, but even if it were so they would be extremely quick and functional(*), as I can not notice anything.

(*) This is in no way meant to be an indirect way of saying "AOS4 drivers are crap": I don't think so at all and I perfectly understand that they need time to mature.

Can't help you with the ethernet problem (I'm forwarding the link to the dev list), but it's not Avail crashing there. Avail FLUSH will expunge all libraries, which includes executing their expunge code. There's probably a library that's causing this.

in your startup sequence , is the addnetworkinterface line still present? and if so...where and what does it exactly say?

Ah, right... just did not think about this but it's pretty obvious indeed.
Well, then I suppose that most probably it is due to the cleanup of the eth3com.device (or something related to it), which is no longer in a sane state (as a consequence of what happened before/during/after the drop-out).

I hope to hear from you soon, guys

Judging by the log file's contents, it appears that the PPP device driver was unsuccessful in getting the ethernet driver to open. Exactly which eth3com.device version is this, and did you try any other version you may have had installed before?

@saimo

Thank you for the long report. I wrote the ppp-ethernet.device driver, but I didn't write the eth3com.device or the Dialer. Since you did not post any error logs generated by the ppp-ethernet.device, all I can do now is guess, and my guess is that the issue might be with eth3com.device. The ppp-ethernet.device driver shouldn't drop connections without having a good reason. Good reasons include that the other side of the connection has requested that the connection should be terminated, or that the connection itself has both been idle for a while and the mandatory tests to check whether the line is still operational have failed. These events leave traces in the log file, if a log file is written. I'd like to know more.

Has anyone else had trouble connecting to the internet through their DSL ethernet modems since upgrading to the third prerelease update?

I'm using a broadband ethernet modem (ADSL) which also acts as my home network router. Is this the same as a DSL modem?

No problems once I got R3 properly installed. Initial screen problems, unrelated to ASDL modem, caused by wrong firmware installed

Ah, right, I forgot about that!
Well, first of all, this is my NetInterface:

# DEVS:NetInterfaces/PPPoE
# File generated by Internet 50.14 (27.7.2004)
# On Thursday, 12-May-05 at 03:57:51
device=ppp-ethernet.device
hardwaretype=Ethernet

then, as for the log, I'm creating one right now (level = all), and I'm just waiting for the connection to drop

Yep, that's what would seem.

It's big now (8 Mb and counting), but I guess that showing you the stuff at the top and and the bottom should be enough... right?
I'm just waiting that Mr. Murphy gives me a break ;)

[some 20 minutes later]

OK, connection dropped and left traces in the log.

The log begins with this:

This is a small update to my first post in this thread.

ABOUT CONNECTING

After one day, I'd say that the failed connection attempts have disappeared on my machine: connection is brought up always at the first try
The fact that now PEB is experiencing what I had to endure before update #3 is quite weird... maybe just a settings problem?

ABOUT CRASHES

I've found out - and I should have thought about it earlier - that the crash caused by Avail can be reproduced very easily, so this is a test I recommend everybody with DSL connection tries. After the connection is established, manually disconnect and then do an Avail FLUSH: this should wake up the GrimReaper.

However, now that I don't have anymore (re-)connection problems, I'm not obliged to perform the flush after a disconnection, so I discovered that after reconnecting Avail FLUSH does _not_ cause any problem anymore: a clear indication that the crash is caused by the cleanup code of the eth3com.device (or something related to it).

Hope this helps.

Yes. The frame data is not of great relevance at this point, so you shouldn't have had to turn it on: it only serves to make the log file much, much bigger than it ought to be

The second is that connection dropped because that's what the server commanded.

Thank you, I'll have to go over this with a PPP manual to see what kind of data the local PPP driver tries to send (at times I wish I had a photographic memory). My best guess is that it tries to get an LCP "echo" command through in order to verify that the line is still good. What might be of particular interest is what happened before these short packets were sent (or not sent). I hope you stored the log file in a safe place for later reference?

I noticed also another thing: the MRU and MTU are set to 1492, whereas I have left the value (1500) that the dialer during the auto-configuration. Although I don't believe this affects anything in any way, why did auto-detection fail? Or it did not even check that?

Well spotted! The 1492 byte MTU is a peculiarity of the PPP-over-Ethernet (PPPoE) protocol. PPPoE packages standard PPP frames in Ethernet frames, and the 8 byte difference to the maximum Ethernet MTU is due to the protocol overhead. Put another way, if the MTU weren't fixed to 1492 bytes the PPPoE negotiation wouldn't work in the first place.

I'm pretty ignorant of networking and I could not know what you would need, so I went for the safest option
Anyway, what level would you recommend for future tests?

That's a many men's dream

Unfortunately I have stored only the part I posted here (actually, the whole post): do you mean that the data before the disconnection is not enough? If so, I'm sorry; but anyway I can produce a brand-new log anytime (it's just a matter of waiting: in the last hour or so it happened at least 3 times).

So it _is_ a misconfiguration of the wizard!
BTW: pppoeconf from Linux reported the right value, so it's not an issue of miscommunication with the concentrator.

It's getting a bit late and I haven't used the Dialer in quite a while. Which options have you got for the logging?

Exactly: the reason why the disconnection follows might be in the data transmitted before the monotonous short packet exchange takes place.

No, this isn't a problem. For one thing, the MTU is negotiated with the peer on the other end of the line. Then there's a "physical" limitation to how high you can crank it up to start with. For example, PPPoE simply won't work if you try to use more than 1492 bytes, which is why ppp-ethernet.device caps the maximum MTU at this number. It's a different story with asynchronous PPP over serial lines since this medium doesn't have a predefined hardware MTU to observe (PPPoE frames have to fit within the Ethernet MTU or some smart router, if not the hardware itself, will drop them on the floor). In this case, the peer will likely suggest a smaller MTU as part of the link negotiation.

Definitely (I'm even 1 hour ahead)...

There is plenty of them

- none
- link layer events
- link control protocol events
- authentication events
- ip control protocol events
- link quality reports
- contents of incoming frame
- contents of outgoing frames
- contents of the incoming data buffer
- all

OK, I'll produce another log, then.

As for the MTU stuff... well, I only got the general sense of it, but thanks for explaining

We're lucky!
This time the connection lasted only ~2 minutes, so the crash log, even at level "all", is very short (16 kb)

Here it comes (I can sent it to you by email, but I would need your address. If you want send an email to the address shown in my profile):
