| Copied from Hardmac.com:
"David wanted to get information from Gigadesigns about the schedule for G4 7448-based upgrade cards. Hereafter is part of the answer:
"No plans for 7448 upgrades anytime soon. The price for the chips is just too high!"
In addition, current Apple's contract with Freescale is only concerning CPU spare parts for replacing defect CPU or entire motherboards. So the production rate and volumes for those CPU will not be impacted by their use in computers, but rather reflect the status of the market for embedded CPU. So the market of CPU upgrade cards still very active today, should decline quickly in a near future. G4 processors will probably not be sold at much lower price allowing their integrations into CPU upgrades, and using PPC970 aka G5 would require heavy R&D investments (compatibility, cooling, etc...) In addition, MacIntels are powered by soldered CPUs (MB Pro), not designed to be exchanged, or using a socket, making CPU upgrade really simple. Let’s expect that Apple does not prevent CPU upgrade in MacIntels by using some firmware tricks as it happened in the past; it would not be a good marketing and communication action, and for sure will not help PC users to switch."
Currently, Giga Designs still offers a 1.8GHz G4 7447A Processor Upgrade for $299.

It would be interesting to know why the 7447A processor was ruled out by ACK. |

| Hi polka.
So, you don't have an AmigaOne, but are here to tell us that what we want is too expensive.
The ones who have an AmigaOne will each on their own have to decide for themselves if they're willing to shell out or not.
Know this however, you do NOT KNOW when the LAST ONE will roll of the assembly line, where will that leave you then???
This should be written up in PC World by John Dvorak, showing why the companies that MAKE PPC chips only have THEMSELVES to blame for the absolute failure of the product line.
When Apple was buying every spare chip around, they couldn't keep up with demand, even though a second company started producing them.
Also, two separate companies were producing a bewildering array of chips, and also basically producing the SAME chips as each other, splitting the SMALL market on top of that.
Oh, don't forget announcements of chips that never came to be, or were way late.
ibm in particular CONSTANTLY makes announcements of products that never appear, because someone else releases the product they announce 5 months before them, for $200 or more, less. |

| Forgot to say, now they'll be expensive because of low volume production, because no one on Earth needs them.
And there's two companies making them, splitting the market down the middle. |

1) Where did I say anything about Amiga in my post? 2) Where did I tell anyone what he/she wants? 3) Where did I say that something is too expensive?

Probably at a point where you finally have to decide to switch to another CPU-family, which is available and cheap. _________________ This signature is in the middle of a much needed facelift! |

Considering you get new computer for the price of the CPU, it’s not too expensive compared to a new computer whit every thing, yes your getting less for your money but do you need every thing? Or are just wasting money buy stuff you don’t need.
Unless you get complete PPC computer for the same price, the CPU upgrade is option.

LOL, what a load of rubbish (no offence). The PPC market is far from dead (that is generic PPC rather than G4 specifically). Each Xbox 360 has 2 (not sure if its one dual core or two physical processors) PPC chips in it (G5's I believe), and they are selling millions of those, the new Nintendo box is going to have at least 1 PPC chip, a high volume of mid to high range printers have PPC chips in them, a large number of network devices (routers etc) have PPC chips in them. I would hardly call this a small market.
Regards
Mark

Sorry, I can't follow your logic there. What keeps you from buying a modular system and getting only the stuff you want and need?

+ The Cell CPU with the PPC based core. + A few others like AMCC producing singlecore and soon multicore PPC derivates.

Calm down, please. I DO have an A1, I'm betatester, etc., and I still think the new CPU upgrades are expensive too, whatever the reason -low production run, expensive parts, etc.-. They cost nearly the same a whole motherboard did. Unfortunately, there are no MBs available in this moment, so there's no other option if you want to upgrade your A1.
My A1 is clocked at 933MHz, so the 1GHz upgrade is not an option for me. I've been considering the 1'7GHz board, but, hey, it's a hell a lot of money, at least for my tiny pocket. Perhaphs if someone makes a sensible offer for my current CPU, let's say 400$...

hi Ferrán
you need to remember that the cache increase in the 7448 compared to Your 7441/7445? should still make it alot faster, even though there is only a little frequence increase (plus remember that frequency is not everything)_________________ Best regards, hnl_dk - Henning Nielsen Lund [Denmark]

| Still cheaper than the original 68060 and PowerUp cards were. I know doesn't make them more affordable though. |

Hmmm... No, I didn't think of it, thanks for the hint. Anyway, I would like to see some benchmark to see the real speedup. Adam, would it be possible to see benchmarks for both CPU modules compared to current CPUs?

yes I got bored listing them at that point
and if you go into derivatives, you could go back the other way to POWER (PPC is a derivative of POWER) based products and expand the list even more.

I hope this isn't interpreted as "advertising" breaking the site TOS, but just as another example of an active PPC market -- and note the "interesting" price:
Quote:
... a dual 970 platform that is being especially fitted with our PAPR (POWER Architecture Platform Reference) compliant IEEE1275 firmware capabilities to enable it to rapidly meet market requirements for the applications we target. We anticipate [a] very reasonable price point (especially for a 64 bit computing system) of approximately $1,500 for a complete system.... |

Well, G4 and G5 are two different architectures. AmigaOS only supports the former (G4), which certainly isn't very alive today...Last edited by ealm on 26-Apr-2006 at 01:15 PM.

| Console market is a different world. It has nothing to do with desktop computing. M$ or Nintendo HAS the money to ask for custom ppc processors, as was Apple. Any small company looking for ppc is wasting his money and time, ppc is dead for desktops, only alive for embedded systems.
