Now that Amiga OS 4.0 Classic version has been out for almost a month has anyone heard anything from Elbox? It would be good if they had some solutions for Amiga OS 4.0 and they could make nice $$$ for themselves.

@DiscreetFX

I don't think anyone was really expecting anything from Elbox at this point..they don't exactly have a record of 'delivering' by now.

No Dragon, no overpriced Sonnet for 3x the cost, uhh, 'Shark'..no Elbox products for OS4.

Of course, were you feeling charitable, you could claim, 'Oh, it must be the court case,' but AFAIK, they have never even contacted Hyperion or the OS4 devs.

Which of course, IS really too bad...they were a good company for classic stuff, anyways.

@DiscreetFX

Read on another site that somone had got an unoffical answer from Elbox.
Said OS4 drivers for Mediator should be no problem and they still expect to produce the Shark.

Last rumours I heard were that Elbox decided there's no point (at this late time) to produce Shark in its 'actual' form.

Who can critise Elbox for not producing their boards?

We live in 2007, in a few days we will enter 2008. This is not 1997 or 1998.

Just put yourselves in the place of Elbox. How many will they buy their product? Is their anyone left other than us, a few hounder or 1k/2k people that want to run OS4 and spend 600~700 (or even more) euros in the amiga hobish market for an expasion board? Nope.

The problem is Amiga Inc. If they are gone, someone with a little sense on their mind, will be able to provide us a basic board (e.g SAM) with OS4.

Hi@DiscreetFX

...eat that Shark card after all.

Amiga "jumped the shark" and Elbox was a victim!

See-- http://jumptheshark.com
for the 'biz' reference. At least that's my belief...

@Cool_amigaN

I think you can't have that attitude. Based on your logic NO ONE would produce anything in the Amiga market. If you build it and it is a good product, marketed properly and priced right, people will buy it.

Look at the Nintendo Wii. Who would have thought what a runaway success it would be? Their previous console did not do well at all.

Who knows what Elbox will do? Maybe nothing. Maybe they release the Shark and we find out that it will also work in a PC's PCI slot. So you could run OS4 via this PCI card with PPC cpu and it would have driver support for the rest of the PC hardware.

Think about that. Innovation sells.

I keep suggesting that maybe if they release the SharkPPC, they could make a Minimig CPU card for the Dragon.
With an open source kick rom the Dragon could act as a classic and for the sole purpose of plugging a SharkPPC in.

The result is that you have brand new stand alone hardware that runs OS4 but no need to get a licence from Amiga Inc.

Does not really compute, since the Shark is nothing but a Sonnet PCI PPC card. Even if they completely redesign it, it'll be nothing that hasn't been done before, tens of times.

@HammerD

I think that any ppc expansion board for our old amigas is a dead end.

First we will be given a negative analogy between Cost vs Mhz.

Secondly it's supposed to be used on old amigas and expect 1200 all the others can only be find from a second/third/fourth hand.

Also, the above is the main flaw. Covering our, I repeat hobish, market is not enough. If a new user wants to enter the amiga world will have to spent at least 900 euros for a fully equipped Amiga (the classic board, plus ppc expansion, mediator, case, psu, gfx, e.t.c. ). And he will get, what? A machine that will propably reach 800 Mhz at it's best (the dragon is only 266!), FSB 133MHz, 2 sockets for PC-133 SDRAM modules (a type of RAM that cannot even be found in my country anymore, lol), 1 AGP x2 slot (same as the previous one) and UDMA100 EIDE?

Come on people, that's not attractive to anybody alse expect us!

We need a solution that will have it all, and won't look... retro, right from its startup. Something like SAM but with more power would be a killer if could be marketed and sold at low price.

Of course I will buy any of the ppc accelators that Elbox might produce. But none other will, that I know and he isn't an amiga fan.

If Elbox pay Hyperion to port OS4 to SharkPPC and release the SharkPPC with an OEM version of OS4, they will have done something that hasn't been done before.

We will have to wait and see if they do, but according to how you interpret the contract, they may be able to get a port done without having to deal with Amiga Inc. If we see OS4 native Mediator drivers in the new year that will be a good sign that other work is going on.

@Rob

Yeah, if the Shark only works on classic Amigas it should be covered by the classic Amiga part of the licence. What remains to be seen is whether the parties involved will be bothered to port, given the current situation.

@Zardoz

If Elbox pay the ¤25,000 or whatever it is porting fee, Hyperion arn't likely to say no.

If Elbox can sell at least 1000 SharkPPC's it is worth their while to do it.
