In this case, Moonlight is not a Microsoft project, it's an open source project that Microsoft is actively backing. So if MS decides that it can't afford to have people on the project any more (the #1 reason sofware projects get killed "for no apparent reason"), the current team of volunteers can still keep it going. One could argue that MS can turn around and sue the Silverlight people for patent infringement, but I'm pretty sure the Mono team checked their contracts before signing them
