Either my memory is bad (which is quite possible) but I'm sure Bill said AA2 was OS5 only a couple of weeks ago. Also last year we are told OS5 development was proceeding well. Now we are told it is a long term goal and it sounds like not a single line of code has been written so far.

This is starting to get confusing,

Kad.

Gee, did they fire Bill and find somebody who can actually tell the truth? Well, ignoring the tripe about OS5 anyway. For example:

http://www.amiga.com/faqs/

Quote:
Q: Is Amiga Anywhere 2 an operating system?
A: No. It would be most accurately described as a 'middleware solution'.

Wow, it IS better than OS X! [roll]

Quote:
Q: Aren't there other products that already do the same thing?
A: Such middleware solutions are certainly not a new idea, and other products with similar goals are already well established and commonly used.
So far, so good....

Quote:
AA2 differs in the extent of the number and range of features offered and the ease to which these can be used.
...now the train starts to go off the track again but it was a fun ride while it lasted.

Actually I think that FAQ represents the most believable information AInc has released since... well, since ever.

@retro

I think their FAQ is very clear in distinguishing between OS5.0 and AA2. I gathered from everything I have read here that AA2 was OS5.0.

Can't blame me for thinking that as Amiga did a poor job of explaining the difference.

The question still remains as to what OS5.0 will be like and when it is released.

I have a little more faith left now

@retro

Nice little update although it brings not much news or real information.

Seems to be in a distant future we will see OS5, unless they win the courtcase and want to use a modified OS4 and call that OS5.

New Amiga Inc buzzwords... "distributed virtualized operating system"

I think that's a good description. "Virtual" means something that physically
does not exist...

Hehe.. Yeah thats right, but I am beginning to think that Amiga Inc might actually have done some work on OS5!
I didn't think they had before but I think they are actually going to release something this year.

Whether any of it will be a succcess remains to be seen, I wish them good luck though.

No, a third party reporter made a comment about an off the record comment Bill said to him at an event on his blog. (Making yet another example of why you should treat such comments with more than a grain of salt).

@All

There are only a few things that are real at the moment:

1) OS4
2) minimig
3) SAM
4) Natami

Anything else is just fog. Until I can see evidence of OS5, or OS4 running on mac mini then for me it's all food for chatting and nothin more.

Can I see it and touch it? No? Then it doesn't exist.

I'm where Happy the FAQ was written.

We have now established 3 things.

* AA2 is not OS5.
* AA2 is "middle-ware solution" and will never be OS.
* OS5 will be able to run hosted as well as stand-alone.

It's no wonder way we get confused when Bill always says AA / AA2 is a new operating system.

@NutsAboutAmiga

It isn't hard to understand. AA2 is hosted application environment that has a limited API set and lets the underlying OS get on with the rest.

OS5 is a full blown OS with more extensive API sets that can run AA2 apps, plus those that may exceed the framework of the hosted environment.

How much is done, whether the whole thing will see the light of day is debatable, but as much as has been revealed (and it isn't much) actually makes good sense as far as it goes.

A new SDK for AA2 appears ready for downloading, but as I have to sign an NDA to get it, even when I find out what it is based on, I will not be able to say anything.

So this is my hope, not having seen anything, or known anything - my hope is that I will be looking at a REBOL 3 application environment, and the OS5 componant being an easy to port mini-OS based on who knows what?

Perhaps TAO has been bought-up, or it is QNX, Syllable, or even a mini-linux? I doubt that the SDK will give me any clues anyhow.

But AA2 will be insteresting, just as the original TAO based system was.

If it does not pan out - REBOL 3 is looking good.

Yeah, it seems that my suspicions about the accuracy of the single reporter claiming OS5 == AA2 was correct. OS5 is a superset of AA2.

Whether or not AA2 or OS5 are any good, remains to be seen. But at least there is room for hope - should you wish to take the risk of attaching your hopes & dreams to a piece of vapourware...

Perhaps it's slipped by me in the past, but did you notice how Amiga's little signature at the bottom changed?

"About Amiga
Amiga, Inc., initially founded in 1983 and re-established in 2000, is a computer software company with a rich heritage in game development and a focus on forging a path for multimedia platform development and hardware-independent technologies. For almost two decades Amiga’s software has been a mainstay for motion picture studios, multimedia creators, and digital entertainment enthusiasts around the world. For more information, visit www.amiga.com."

Initially founded in 1983 and re-established in 2000. Perhaps people have been listening to our rants about how this Amiga is not the Amiga we all knew and loved.

Yeah, I caught that also. Rants don't seem to accomplish much, but I wonder this time. It sure is a change toward reality.

Yes, I noticed that. Possibly McEwan is dampening his Reality Distortion Field a tad, since it doesn't work nearly as well as Steve Job's... Quite why it's taken several years (?) for that to happen, I can't guess.
