| It's said that Windows can do up to 108, Mac up to 150 and Linux is shown here running 165. And Amiga? Have you ever tried?
Of course, I don't know exact configs of these machines, so if you do any test, please post your config and specs.

Isn't it down to CPU and RAM nothing more? Surely windows could run 1000 apps if it had tons of RAM? _________________ Amiga A1200, 3.1 ROMs, Blizzard 1230 MKIV 64MB & FPU, 4GB DoM SSD, Workbench 3.1 |

Personally I do not see the point in that linux video, as it doesn't really prove anything. For example, I just ran 100 instances of "Clock". Along with the other programs that run as part of the boot up normally, this puts my Amiga running over 110-120 "applications". Sure it isn't particularly responsive at this point, but it doesn't prove anything other than I can run 120+ things at the same time - which is the point in a multitasking system isn't it?

It still gives some idea. On Amiga 1200 you can not practically have move than 10 windows opened at the same time. Amiga layers system is slow that it starts choking while applications are using no cpu time at all.

Depends on what kind of application and the amount of ram and such. I am however pretty damn sure that AmigaOS can do way more apps at the same time providing you have around the same hardware specs thanks to AmigaOS using very little resources which leaves more ram for apps/games.
But you can pretty much forget comparing a classic amiga with a modern pc.Last edited by Tomas on 11-Apr-2008 at 03:12 PM.

Not every program has a window, and single program can have many windows.
But they are not necessarily on the same screen.

You're right. It is a nonsense to ask how many applications you can open at the same time. Another question could be : how many applications are really working at the same time ? I don't find win very good at this game.

More important than how many apps are running, is how usable the machine is while doing that. If you run 1000 programs and have to wait 10000 minutes to move the mouse, what exactly is your gain? ;))) |

Well, I got 1308 running before I got tired in my arm... ;) http://hem.bredband.net/deniil/pics/ManyPrograms.jpg
As you can see I started a couple of Calculators. I have 512MB RAM with 260MB free when I started and 73MB free when I quit. Aas you can (perhaps not quite) see by Scout every calculator also got one CON and One KingCON process started. Each with 32kB stack.
Guess Amiga wins
(No seriously. Amiga has no limit except for memory, which is 4GB. Linux has a limit in its PIDs which are short (16-bit, 64k) or long (4G), or perhaps long long (16E). Windoze, I don't know. Mac=UNIX..?) _________________ - Don't get fooled by my avatar, I'm not like that (anymore, mostly... maybe only sometimes) > Amiga Classic and OS4 developer for OnyxSoft. |

Surely quality over quantity is better? I would be far more impressed to see 1 Firefox window on the Amiga than 1300 copies of calculator...

LOL I love it.
Anyways I tried that on my windows xp system. I got 116 windows calculators open, then windows refused to open any more. Can anyone else go higher?
I can't even control alt delete with that many open! HAHAHA I also had firefox open but thats it.
With task manager open I can't reopen the 1 calculator I closed to get task opened. No other programs will launch now. And task manager is not showing me any performance info. To get performance to show Only 114 calcs can run, and I have 1.4 gig still available and no other program will launch. i love MS!! NOT!!!
Amiga WIns!!
XP Home with 2.6ghz cpu, and 2 gig ram. _________________ “Wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair and all the terrible things that happen to us, come because actually deserve them? So now I take comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the Universe” |

The Amiga is the first to do so. And it's still the best to do so. _________________ --------- AmigaClyde

There were PMT OS's in use long, long, long before AmigaOS. And the Amiga is far from best *cough*nomemoryprotection*cough*. _________________ The problem with AmigaOS on PPC isn't that PPC is big-endian. The problem with AmigaOS on PPC is that PPC is dead-endian. |

The CoCo and British "Dragon" systems both ran OS9. _________________ The problem with AmigaOS on PPC isn't that PPC is big-endian. The problem with AmigaOS on PPC is that PPC is dead-endian. |

If that is the generic "you", then both OS9 on the TRS80 and QDOS on the Sinclair QL predate the first Amiga.
If it is the specific "you" (i.e. "me"), then it's a pointless question --- because then, by the same logic, I could claim that the VZ200 was the first home computer, ever, the MTX500 was the first to come with a well-documented user-port, and the 386SX was the first PC.

Even if it´s only 400 apps, it´s x3+ times more than Windows can (Frostwolf test)Last edited by Fransexy on 12-Apr-2008 at 07:31 AM.
